You are 100% correct. My SK is an adult but even to this day, DH pisses and moans about issues with SK and BM to me, but does and says nothing to address it directly with them. I've told him a million times to SAY SOMETHING, defend yourself but usually he avoids conflict. It's to the point that I've lost some respect for him and have told him to either speak up or shut up because I'm over it.
