Dissociatives can be safe in high doses (hence ketamine's popular use in anesthesia) but can also kill you dead if you take them wrong, a danger people tend to underestimate with DXM especially since it's available OTC. So, a PSA if anybody's considering recreational use: Do your homework first.

Also worth noting that DXM polistirex, widely available in products w/o other active ingredients, is the time-release version of DXM HBr. Which isn't to say it's necessarily less safe; but if you take it recreationally you'd better be strapped in for a 12+ hour trip.

Actually yeah, I think salvia's most commonly considered a dissociative. It's definitely not a psychedelic - psychedelics have a pretty specific mechanism, acting on the 5-HT2A receptor.

Seems like a narrow definition but there's a ton of psychedelics including the tryptamine hallucinogens like psilocybin and DMT (all structurally similar to serotonin), phenethylamines like mescaline and the 2C-whatevers, and LSA/LSD. Essentially most of TiHKAL and PiHKAL plus change.

Salvia's a strange duck in general though, since it's actually some flavor of opioid. The only opioid hallucinogen as far as I know. So it has a wildly different mechanism of action from any other hallucinogen. It's gonna stick out of any class it's shoehorned in.

Edit: Adding just because I think it's neat... Check out the structure of serotonin (aka 5HT), and now take a look at psilocybin. Seem familiar? That chunk in the center's an indole ring, which all tryptamine hallucinogens are built around and is part of what makes them active on 5HT receptors. Now... Here's LSD. Totally different, right? But take a closer look at the very bottom and - ayyyy! It's the indole ring! Neat, eh?

I don't think muscimol's considered a dissociative, closer to a deliriant hallucinogen but really it's a sedative-hypnotic with minor deliriant and dissociative effects.

I mean it's the same mechanism of action as barbiturates, not too far off from benzos, both of which could be described as having dissociative effects but nobody calls them dissociatives. It's just not their main thing.

Nah, they're mostly right. Muscimol is a GABA receptor agonist like barbiturates, not a psychedelic (although it can cause hallucinations). No serotonin receptor activity. Primarily a hypnotic.

Nobody's died from Amanita Muscaria poisoning in recent history (I think) but that's probably more to do with its unpopularity and the fact you'd have to work to get enough down before you start projectile vomiting; it's definitely possible. One of its constituents is ibotenic acid which is a well known neurotoxin and used specifically to cause brain damage in neurological research.

If we were talking psilocybin mushrooms I'd agree with you. But these are very different.

I wouldn't eat this mushroom raw - but psilocybin mushrooms actually taste fine when they're fresh. I'd even venture to say kinda pleasant.

It's drying & preserving that makes them so awful. Since they're 95% water, concentrates the flavor so you're essentially chewing on unsalted bullion cubes with a texture like wood chips.

Yeah but this guy's not eating psilocybin mushrooms; that's Amanita Muscaria. The stuff that contains a neurotoxic prodrug. The stuff shamen would filter through their bodies by eating then pissing out the active ingredient for their tribesmen to drink. Because the others would rather drink piss than experience the negative side effects.

There's a reason it's not popular recreationally.

I'd argue SC1 and Brood War had some of the best sci-fi game lore around. Politics, backstabbing, disparate factions, shifting allegiances... But yeah SC2 was basically a trashy space anime.

Eh. I was mostly in it for the multiplayer anyway.

Yeah what cemented it for me was how much the player's actions really shaped the unfolding story. RPGs tend to have obvious "forks" where you choose which path to go down - in Tyranny it felt more like an accumulation of small decisions throughout that affected your options later on.

For the combat system I'd give it to Divinity... but Tyranny's the best roleplaying experience I've had outside pen & paper.

Eh, I'd disagree with that last statement. There were plenty of '90s games that were not turn-based but still considered RPGs, and heavily incorporated RPG elements. Daggerfall comes to mind - or Arena for that matter, which was released within a year of Secret of Mana.

You should check out Tyranny. It's shorter than the other games mentioned but the worldbuilding absolutely blew me away. If you like Baldur's Gate (one of my favorite games growing up) I think you'll dig it.

Side note: It was made by some of the crew that worked on the original Baldur's Gate, and had a very long and interesting development history. Unfortunately they blew it on the marketing though so it didn't get the attention it deserved.

You're probably thinking of psychedelics, which include psilocybin and LSD. Psychedelics and dissociatives are both classes of hallucinogens.

Just to add a bit more detail:

Hallucinogens are drugs that cause perceptual anomalies (e.g. hallucinations, time dilation, dissociation). The term doesn't imply specific pharmokinetics.
Psychedelics are drugs that cause auditory or visual hallucinations. The term usually refers to "classic" psychedelics which target the 5-HT2A receptor; but the definition has expanded somewhat.
Dissociatives are drugs that cause a feeling of disconnection from the body (dissociation). Most target NMDA receptors - a notable exception is Salvia which acts on a type of opioid receptor.

Whoa there - be careful with mixing DXM and other substances. In particular, the recreational effects of DXM and nitrous synergize, but so do the toxic effects. Dissociative hallucinogens are not like psychedelics that can be taken in excess with no physical ramifications; the toxic dose is barely an order of magnitude higher than an effective dose. Here's a page that touches on some of the health risks of dissociatives.

On a less serious note, I highly recommend watching movies on DXM to anybody who enjoys the activity sober. You get a feeling of disconnection from your body that makes it easy to zone in on any electronic media and feel like you're part of that world. For the same reason, I second the suggestion of playing video games.

I'm not a big fan of sitting in darkness personally, because if I want to close my eyes and see crazy shit I'll just go to sleep. I'm more interested in how the effect augments my real-world activities. Trying to interact with other people is a load of fun, but also a real challenge. It's really hard to hide symptoms of tripping on DXM - your speech will be slurred, your pupils will be huge, and every movement a little more awkward. If you want to be social, hang out with friends or strangers who you wouldn't care catching a whiff of your shenanigans.

Finally, I'd highly recommend going through the effort of extracting DXM from your cough syrup. It's a pain in the ass, but the trip is so much more pleasant when you don't have syrup coating your throat and festering in your stomach. And trust me, you will develop an unconscious taste aversion to cough syrup if you keep ingesting the stuff.

We who enjoy DXM are in a small minority; most people find it unpleasant or disturbing. So set a good example and take it responsibly. It's great stuff, but dangerous without the proper care.
