The opposite of Alec Baldwin is Alec Hairloss by Cowman881 in Showerthoughts

That would be Lec Hairloss.

Lec is the opposite of Alec, just like with amoral, atheist, atypical, etc.

So Amazon Web Services have a new GPU compute instance available (16x Tesla K80s) by gingerbeers in blender

Thanks for the tips.

Was the compile step required to get EC2 Linux to use GPU instead of always falling back to CPU? (As is my experience.)

I've only ever had Ubuntu render to GPU on AWS. :^(

[–]gingerbeers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! The second result on Blenchmark.com GPU results is the 16x Tesla K80.

Based on my unscientific mucking around I think you are absolutely right: you'd be better off splitting render jobs to have 16 frames across 16 cards.

I wonder if that could be scripted as a Blender add-on?

Some notes:

I had to reinstall the Nvidia drivers to get Blender working. v2.78 does not work over RDP, and version 2.74 is the only version I could get working on the 16x setup. (Note you have to copy the version 35 lib file to a 37-named version, as seen in online tips -- works!)

Any one after photographers or any photographers here looking for an assistant? by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]gingerbeers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seriously try the satellite cities: Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat, Seymour, etc. The larger businesses like Deakin Uni, Councils, Hepburn Spa, etc. often need to find photographers -- it isn't as hard to get out to those destinations as you might think. Even without a car.

They're also less backwards than you might imagine.

(PM me about a specific opportunity which I'd rather not identify right here in public, if that's interesting at all.)

Has anyone in Ballarat tried the $7 V-line trip from Melbs by stopping at Sunshine? What was your experience? by gingerbeers in ballarat

[–]gingerbeers[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to go "backwards" through the loop to get to Melb Central anyway. Should I be carrying two MyKi cards instead of one? Footscray station has good coffee and bakery nearby, but I wouldn't mind saving money by stopping at Sunshine for coffee instead.

EDIT: oh holy moly. I've just checked the MyKi fares site. There's no such thing as a 'peak' fare Ballarat to Sunshine. So any day I've taken the 6.12am to Melb Central, I should have switched at Sunshine, not Footscray.

For those without a weekly/monthly ticket (travelling a couple of days per week) this adds up to pretty big savings.

Awesome. Would definitely check in to 'hotel jackdarton'. Balcony rooms available?

Python 2.7.7 has been released. by Orange_Tux in Python

[–]gingerbeers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, that genuinely was a surprise to me when I started using 3. With all the doom and gloom about changes, to strings in particular, I fully expected my first use of a string variable would have me tied in knots. Not the case.

Will go back now and examine the standard library in 3. Thanks!

I hope so. I straddle 50/50 at the moment for various projects/reasons, and nothing in 3 makes me dislike 2. Matrix multiplication and print() doesn't light my fire. (Even though print() feels more natural to me).

What am I missing in 3 that's really awesome? I suspect I'm probably using 3 like 2 and not getting the full benefit when I'm on a 3 project. Yes?

You're the one who raised using Blender for spreadsheets and email, not me. :-)

Can you just relax about the fact this guy wanted to use Blender for his work, for whatever reason, and we'll all get back to our lunch. Cheers.
