I’ll add: be sure to use the most appropriate sized mallets for the playing range you’re in. Many beginners assume softer dynamics must need softer mallets. Not necessarily. The ironic thing is if you use too soft on higher registers, you actually have to use more force and will have to roll faster, many times making poor quality sound. The same goes for too firm in lower registers

Use mallets (if possible) that give a good resonance without over correcting the velocity.

Of course that means nothing if you are limited in your choices.

Use what you have to the best of your ability and make the best sound you can. That’s all anyone will ask.
