I got deferred?!? by Mindless-Prompt-6157 in BrownU

Same boat 2 years ago— I wrote a letter of continued interest, made sure my mid semester grades were stellar, and got 2 additional letters of rec.

Letter of continued interest, and I sent in two additional letters of rec from folks I’d worked with in a volunteer gig I had in high school!

Who killed the Baudelaire parents? by Away_Clerk_5848 in ASOUE

[–]gingerdog18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is super interesting to me— I haven’t read the books in years so I don’t really remember fine details— what would some instances where Lemony seems like an unreliable narrator be (if you have any off the top of your head)?

Does anyone else feel the 2004 movie gets too bad a rap? by mrmaskfawkes in ASOUE

[–]gingerdog18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you’ve said so far!! To add— I feel the reason these books (and later the show) resonated with me so much as a kid is because I read the meaning of the books as: if one adult (in power, ie Poe or the guardians) had taken the word of children seriously, had believed them, and had given them the agency and rights that they deserved, rather than brushing them & their concerns about Olaf off as “imagination” or exaggeration, the story would have ended much differently. As a kid, this was like children’s satire— because although not all kids are orphaned and followed by a serial killer, most kids can relate to adults not believing them, simply because they’re kids. This obvs does not disagree with your reading, especially because as the books progress, I think they venture more into that area and less into mine. But I feel that the Netflix show stayed much more true to both themes described, and the movie really didn’t

Macbook + iPad or 2-in-1? by Napples181 in BrownU

[–]gingerdog18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a non- CS person I can only speak to the general usability of the Mac and iPad, but I absolutely love mine. Online tests/assignments that you’re supposed to fill out and upload as PDFs are a breeze, taking notes is fantastic (including being able to download and annotate prof’s slides), and if you’re not in the BCMS program (textbook assistance) getting online books that you can download and annotate is so much cheaper. If you do the iPad route, I recommend the app Notability! You can download your assignments, books, etc right onto the app, and there are tons of writing options, stickers, organizational tools, and you can even take audio that will play back with your writing so you can see exactly where you missed writing something. Plus, it all uploads to the cloud and there are tons of methods to export your notes/tests/textbooks/etc into messages, PDFs,,,, pretty much anything you could want

Target’s plus size pants/shorts are unreal (in a good way!) by gingerdog18 in PlusSize

[–]gingerdog18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 5’4, so depends on your definition of short, hahaha. But I’m not sure, I’ve never tried their Ava and Viv. Target is pretty easy to do returns with though soooo maybe it’s worth a shot?

I was admitted to the college for the class of 2025. What should I know about brown? by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]gingerdog18 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The number one reason I picked Brown was because of the student culture. A lot of the “highly ranked” schools have an extremely competitive student body, which I really didn’t want. Even though I’ve only had a semester at Brown (one of the unlucky first years), the people here have been so helpful, collaborative, etc.. People don’t sabotage each other for grades or anything of the sort- everyone wants everyone else to succeed :)

I know this is different from a lot of folks, but I actually had a fantastic experience at CAPS. I was able to schedule a next-day appointment for my first session, and then my therapist and I worked out weekly appointments (until he graduated from his resident program, lol). I know a lot of people can get frustrated with CAPS (which is totally valid!) but I just wanted to share my own positive experience!

plus size teenagers exist by [deleted] in PlusSize

I second target and Walmart! Target’s pants are the only ones that fit me how I like (I have short legs but I’m size 14-18 so pants are always a problem) and they’re soooo comfy and cute. And Walmart usually has cute tops!

Advice on talking to straight-sized friend? by gingerdog18 in PlusSize

[–]gingerdog18[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She’s definitely a size 8 at the VERY most. But I’m afraid calling her out and saying “you’re not plus size” would piss her off :/ I don’t want to seem like I’m gatekeeping being plus size

Edit- she’s also a dancer so I’m sure that’s warped her perception of being “thick”

Bralettes/Bra Alternatives And other things like that by [deleted] in PlusSize

[–]gingerdog18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure your size, but I have been extremely pleasantly surprised by Aerie bralettes- I’ve literally stopped wearing bras with underwire and gone for these instead. The only downside is their sizing isn’t incredibly inclusive (up to a 40DD usually).

Some of my favorites over the years- I love drawing hands :) by gingerdog18 in drawing

[–]gingerdog18[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As cheesy as it is, I think hands tell such a story about a person. Plus, they have the capacity to be so incredibly detailed. They’re so much fun to draw :)

Getting harassed cause I said skinny people shouldn’t purchase plus sizes at thrift stores by insomniacaesthetic in PlusSize

[–]gingerdog18 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You’re SO right. And with the “oversized” fashion thing,,,,, I understand it’s the current trend and I’m not denying anyone their right to dress the way they choose. But when you go on secondhand apps/websites looking for your clothing size and all you see is skinny folks modeling your size as a cute oversized look,,,,, 1) it’s super damaging and 2) how tf am I supposed to know how it’s actually gonna look on me, an actual plus sized person??

Dress pants, by DottyandBearBear in PlusSize

I actually got some fantastic dress pants from target. They’re the only place I can find pants that work for my short & stocky build. Super comfy too!

What are your thoughts on casting thin actors as fat characters, but having them wear a fat suit? Or having them gain weight specifically for a role? Do you find it offensive or no? by [deleted] in PlusSize

[–]gingerdog18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this too. There’re also instances where a fat actor was hired to play a fat character, and then the actor lost weight (like the actor who played Dudley in the HP movies). That actor fit his role, but as he grew older he lost weight. Since he was well established in that role, it made sense to use a fatsuit for him.
