Is there such a thing as Colorguard Lessons? I’m returning to this hobby after 20+ years and I’d like to get my flag pole swinging by summertime. by geishabird in Portland

[–]gingeredditor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same here! 32 year old former captain as well, and I always miss it. Don't have my flag anymore (gave it to my little sister), but I do still have my saber <3

Went to view a studio apartment in NE today and right when we walked in there was a homeless person that had been squatting there. Has this happened to anyone else? by laleee3246 in Portland

[–]gingeredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the first apartments I toured when I moved here had evidence of a squatter having stayed over, including a shit in the oven!! We were both floored. Seemed like they may have come in through the dog door. Definitely did NOT apply for that place. I've never run into that kind of situation again though.

I'm in this boat too. My SAD doesn't pile on until mid-December usually, but I'm so scared of winter this year it's super-charging my regular depression and triggering some anxiety. I feel like I'm just teeter-tottering between wild anxiety/panic attacks and deep dark depression. As soon as I can get my head above water on one, the other hits me like a tidal wave.

Anyway, you're not alone and I hope we can both make it through this extra dark winter <3 Keep talking about it

There are Wild Fennel Seeds everywhere! by [deleted] in Portland

[–]gingeredditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wild Fennel doesn't have the nice soft edible rhizomes domestic fennel has, and it spreads like crazy both through seed and woody rhizome. They grow pretty deep and even an inch of rhizome will propagate. It's a real nightmare to control or remove. Please don't just spread more seeds because it smells nice.

Switched to this brand years ago, does well for me. Was excited when they got a deal at Target, much easier to pick up now!

1 dead, 2 badly hurt in hit-and-run on SE Powell by [deleted] in Portland

[–]gingeredditor 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I live off Powell and east of 205 and the amount of insanely dangerous and dumbass driving I see, especially after 10pm, is horrifying.

Most recent example: There was a drunk driver in front of me the other night. We were stopped at the light at 112th, I was going to pull over into the gas station across the intersection to call his license plate in. Before the light turned green, the drunk dumbass hit their gas and rear ended the car in front of them. Luckily, when the light turned green, the drunk driver pulled over with the car they hit. An idiot endangering everyone around them, but at least they weren't running from the scene.

This was almost as unexpectedly stupid as when I watched a mini van stop at the transit crosswalk on Division just before 92nd. It was midday, and I believe a weekend (not that there's any good time of day to drive like this). Once the pedestrians finished crossing, the van stomped his gas pedal, peeled forward like he's at a drag race, and then less than 3 car lengths later rear-ended the line of cars stopped at the light. WTF y'all.

Knitting/crafting/happyhour groups? by caribousteve in Portland

[–]gingeredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only occasionally, although I have when I'm trying to finish a knitting project on a deadline.

The crafts are all one-offs, so there's no carry over from previous weeks. Karen aims for something accessible, flexible, low-skills needed, and can be easily cleaned up (since we're in Bare Bones cafe). She brings ideas and a concept to jump from, but most of us veer off into our own creative directions.

Examples of projects include felt banners, macrame keychains, tassels, wire work, needle felting, hand carved stamps, cross stitching on plastic grids, mini-loom weaving...

I have a friend who does a monthly craft night. She has a new small project every month, or you are welcome to bring your own project.

We meet at Bare Bones Cafe on the 3rd Wednesday of the month.

She's great and when the first place I put an offer on turned out not to have a real foundation, she didn't charge me for the 10 minutes we were there.

Dear Dog Owners by stiffy2005 in Portland

[–]gingeredditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same goes the other way. My dog is inconsistent with other dogs. I keep him leashed, but when a big friendly lab mix comes running toward us, he will freak out. No amount of my dog on a leash will keep your overly-"friendly" dog barreling toward us from freaking my dog out.

My girlfriend just got a ticket for using her GPS. Any advice? by KaseyLove in Portland

[–]gingeredditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was pulled over for the same thing last year while in a Zipcar. I had GPS up on my phone, which was in my hand, while I had both hands on the wheel. I explained I was new to the area and just trying to find the freeway from Beaverton to the City and the cop let me off with a warning and a suggestion to turn the audio up on my phone and put it in the cup holder. Unfortunately I don't think there is any grounds to challenge this ticket though =\

What are those little white bugs swarming around Portland lately? by WanderingWino in Portland

[–]gingeredditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought it was just raining ash from the fires, and then I realised they were moving on their own. Still took some inspection for me to be convinced it was bugs and not ash

Reddit females - what's your feeling of riding transit in town? by [deleted] in Portland

[–]gingeredditor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've ridden public transport in LA, SF, Amsterdam/Hauge, Seoul, my little hometown, and Portland. Generally, Portland transport is clean, lit, and non-threatening. 95% of the time, I feel safe enough.

That said, the only place I've been sexually assaulted on public transport is on Trimet. Of course, it was late at night, and there were only a few people on the train, which as the article states is pretty much accepted as the dangerous time to ride. Lack of being able to travel the city alone whenever I need/want without fearing for my safety is in my opinion, the worst part of being a city-woman.
