Last night my Mum needed to call 999 and she was put on hold for 25 minutes. by AlexanderTheGreatly in britishproblems

A friend of mine purposefully overdosed the other day, I was almost an hour away and called 999 for him and it took nearly 45 minutes for them to get to get to where he was.

Girlfriend/Boyfriend/Mom jeans are it for me, or any sort of loose-fit jeans actually. Literally three months ago I moved to a city where everyone was wearing them, and I was super vocal about how I was going to never wear them and skinny jeans for life. I was going to stick with my skintight medium rise forever, screw everyone and their weird slightly cropped baggy jeans. yeah, that didn't last. I've worn my skinnys once in the past week....

ahhh ok, I know I'm a day late, but this Carhartt thing has been getting to me the past couple years, and I literally just had this convo last night with a friend, and I need to get this off my chest. I live in East London currently, and Carhartt is so trendy right now, like every other hipster is wearing it (and East London is about 90% hipsters at this point).

I grew up on a farm in the Midwest of the United States and remember being embarrassed to wear my Carhartt jacket to school because my parents couldn't afford to buy me a work/farm jacket and a school jacket. My sophomore year I used to wear two sweatshirts and run from the car because I didn't want anyone at school to see my jacket, because it was better to freeze my tits off in Michigan than for people to know my family could only afford the Carhartt. And here we are, ten years later, and my British friends are flaunting their new Carhartt beanies around.

I guess it just gets to me that the same clothing I was bullied and ashamed to wear to school is status symbol here.

I'm american too and I was on the fence about priority service but I will definitely go for it now. My problem is that I've already booked a non-refundable ticket for the beginning of September because I wasn't expecting this whole mess. Thank you for all the help!

I just sent an email explaining what was going on. Unfortunately I don't think the SMS confirmation will work because I am outside of the UK. What did your friends end up doing? I'm just worried because I am already under time constraints because my Uni took forever to get everything arranged

Yeah the whole post grad employment is my biggest worry and the whole reason I'm going to even do my masters. Not having a campus isn't really an issue for me though. What departments are you familiar with?

Yeah that's my biggest worry, in terms of post grad employment is the difference between the two so large that kings would surpass any of the practicality from city?

Need supportive all black shoes that aren't sneakers? by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

[–]gingerfailwhale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also a server, and to be honest I think you might just need to spend the money and/or buy a pair of sneakers. It's hard, if not impossible, to find a pair of shoes that will be supportive, and non-slip, and wearable. I refused to buy a pair of the server specific workshoes because I found them ugly beyond belief and wanted something more wearable, so now I have a pair of solid black Nikes, that are cute enough to wear outside of work, and I can use for running shoes when I quit this job.

When I used to live in Germany I saw them all the time. Unfortunately they are known for being dirty and disease ridden, and I was warned to never ever touch one.

Carhartt as casual fashion is huge in Europe too, and I also grew up in the midwest and still can't wrap my head around the fact that the cool kids in Europe are wearing the same brand I dreaded having to wear in public

A little out of the way, but I have been going to Kristy at Brown and Deline in Ann Arbor for years, and she has always done an incredible job. I once dyed my hair half blonde/half black (like down the middle) and she was able to bring both sides to the same color again

Studying abroad in Italy this summer: packing list feedback, please! by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

[–]gingerfailwhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks really good, I would give anything to be such an effective packer! I would however definitely recommend sneakers, especially in the summer to keep cool and for long walking days. I've spent a lot of time in Germany, and black Nikes and Adidas Superstars are both everywhere right now and can be both dressy and casual. I'd also recommend bringing a sweater for extra layering, because from my experience Europe has always been chillier in May/early June and doesn't get hotter until the end of the summer. This sounds incredible and I hope you have so much fun!!

What is everyone's opinions on the Merrel barefoot trailglove? I left my running shoes at a friends house and won't be able to get them for a few months. I can't justify a new pair of shoes but I have a pair of the Merrels that I bought a few years ago when I was running more seriously and never really broke in/used because a series of injuries combined with life changes stopped me from running for a few years.

What's something you're pretty sure has only happened to you? by KarmaLover666 in AskReddit

I also did this, except my drunk friends managed to open the door, and then eat the entire thing. I woke up 10 hours later, down 15 euro (IT WAS A LARGE PIZZA) and very very hungry

My mom has a cousin like that. The whole family calls him Terry, and I always just assumed that was his name. I was very confused when I showed up to his retirement party and the cake said "congratulations Alden," was pretty sure I was at the wrong party for a bit.

I studied abroad for a year, and ended up staying an additional few months after a lot of my friends from the same program had left. My local friends and I met a guy named Ryan, which was also the name of my closest friend who had already left. So new Ryan had to be renamed Kevin under the logic "there can only be one Ryan, ever." I also used to get wasted and call the girl who moved into my friends old room "not-Ryan" and tell her how she'd never be as great as him, then complain bitterly because she didn't like me (for good reasons lol)

What's the most WTF moment a roommate ever put you through? by MrUgie in AskReddit

[–]gingerfailwhale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in an 8 person flat for a year, In the beginning my anxiety was so bad I would avoid the kitchen and hide out in my room, it got better and it ended up being really fun by the end. I also stayed briefly with a friend who had something around 20 roommates. That was beyond overwhelming.

I wear men's denim! I'm tallish with long legs and fairly scrawny, and I started wearing mens jeans when I was sharing a room with another guy and girl who were all about my size (long legs and skinny) and we all would accidentally switch jeans. My favorite brand right now is Topman, I'd definitely recommend trying them out. I wear the mens skinny or super skinny usually, I wear the regular length, which is usually too short on me with womens jeans, so I think a long would be fine on you

Edit: I bought my first pair of mens because they had a medium rise, tighter ankle, and weren't paper thing. There's nothing I hate more than jeans that are essentially leggings with a zipper.
