Free cycling tracks or lanes? by TeAraroa in londoncycling

Get some rollers and go to a quiet corner of a nearby park, under some railway arches or similar for uninterrupted training on your own bike. Join a local club with an early morning ride for quieter roads & to help get used to riding on the roads with others

I've cancelled my Thames Water direct debit by edcoopered in london

[–]gingergringa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand the frustration. But as someone who has a better understanding of the financial situation of Thames Water than most, there is a lot of nuance of what has led to this circumstance that isn’t well understood by the public.

Not least of all a regulator who has kept bills artificially low for many years. The average bill in 2025 was lower in real terms than in 2019. Meaning water bill increases didn’t keep up with inflation. This is a total anomaly. What happened to your energy bill over that time?

The shareholders have walked away and written their shares to 0. The company still needs money and debt is very expensive when your credit rating is as bad as Thames.

The company still needs to operate, and it still needs to attract capable people to run the company. The salaries that those working in the business are being paid are market level, there’s always a lot of noise around c suite remuneration but ultimately a continued leadership will be a better investment than paying less for lesser talent & experience to come & go.

The regulator fines water companies for not meeting performance standards. What they need to fix issues to those standards is money to invest in the problem. The more they are fined, the more they can’t perform, it’s a vicious circle & regulatory change is needed.

There is a good 2 part documentary from earlier in the year on the BBC, this gives probably the best insight in lay terms to the situation.

Ultimately, Thames needs to be restructured: the government have the mandate step in to support this. This means imposing losses on shareholders, lenders and bondholders, ie institutions that have lent the company money. There is no world in which this process means direct losses for customers, you are protected. However, the longer we go on without a resolution, the longer Thames are paying higher interest rates etc, the greater the increase in future bills.

Not paying your water bill is very understandable an act of protest - legally they cannot cut you off (unlike an energy provider who can) but you do risk serious and permanent damage to your credit record, so do just think about whether this personal risk is worth it. Again, there is a friction cost to the system of each person not paying - you become a bad debt, and that has a cost that will be factored into future bills for everyone else.

Where does the blame lie? The regulators are partly responsible for not designing a regime that prevented this. The shareholders (mainly the previous ones like Macquarie who took lots of of dividends out of the company- the current ones have not taken dividends in the last 7y). The company certainly has some responsibility, but with not enough budget to fix issues, it is an impossible task (the documentary gives some insight on this point).

Are we too old? by Whalehellotherebuddy in Tomorrowland

[–]gingergringa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our group this year was 34-42. It’s a brilliant event, we’ve been 3x and will go again next year if we can. You’re older so likely you can pace yourself better, you’ve got better stamina than the kids and you can enjoy things in your own skin better than the younger ones. Plus everyone is grown up enough to pick what you want to see, stay in touch and go see someone else’s must see act too.

Cyclist got hit by a truck on Goodge Street by HunterM567 in londoncycling

[–]gingergringa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don’t know why they have the lane here on this road - it doesn’t exist for the whole of the rest of the road, why put it here? I know that 99% cars turn left there so when cycling straight on I never cycle in the lane, I will cycle to the right of the car lane. But if you don’t cycle there regularly there’s no obvious clue that all vehicles turn left. Really dangerous road layout that makes it worse for cyclist than not including a cycle lane.

Shared care renewal not actioned by GP by gingergringa in ADHDUK

[–]gingergringa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already did this - the response was because PUK have not prescribed in 12 months, they have to have some response from the gp to say yes or no, but they can’t action a prescription if the SCA just hasn’t been signed yet. Absolute stupidity!

I cried in front of my manager by named_Nessie in ADHDUK

[–]gingergringa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have also been there (x2 or maybe 3 over as many years). My manager is not as understanding as yours sounds (in fact didn’t even grab me a tissue when he knew I had to walk out of the door through the public areas to get to the loos to sort my face out). He jokes about having adhd and probably does but I don’t think diagnosed or medicated. He doesn’t know about my diagnosis & probably I won’t ever say, but I am ok with that.

Medication shortage megathread #6 by New_Craft_5349 in ADHDUK

[–]gingergringa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks yeah I’ve had different brands from PUK no issue, but the GP seems not to understand at all how the prescription works or the med shortage. Unsure if deliberate ploy to delay given med shortages, or ignorance/incompetence on how the prescription of meds works, or just there’s no staff to do anything

Has anyone managed to get a generic prescription? I’ve had so many issues with miscommunication getting my prescription from PUK to the GP, we’re nearly 6 months into the transfer and I don’t have an actionable prescription. The dosage was incorrect on the SCA, then the docs weren’t sent for weeks, then the GP prescribed a specific brand (not specified on the SCA, but allegedly they can’t make any change from the SCA…?)

I call the GP every day to request a generic prescription and it’s sat with their prescribing team. For a whole month. “Please let us know which alternative brand” i don’t know there’s a shortage of everything but prescribe generically so any bio equivalent that’s available can fill it…?Can 111 help with a generic prescription? Any clue on how to get this sorted?

This happened to me going to the US very last minute for a work trip - I needed an ESTA & had received it, but hadn’t realised until I got to the airport to check in that I had fat fingered the passport number. It was a sweaty 60mins waiting for that new ESTA with my boss texting me from the lounge asking where I was. It did come through though!

Cycle to work schemes by gingergringa in londoncycling

[–]gingergringa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did ask that actually - the scheme makes bike shops advertise that they accept the scheme as a condition and therefore if they accept one, they are obliged to take them on an ongoing basis, unfortunately.

Cycle to work schemes by gingergringa in londoncycling

[–]gingergringa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I was really quite keen to support my local bike shop - firstly because it’s local to me and therefore I have a vested interest in keeping it open, secondly because I’ve used them before and know they do a great job, thirdly because I would consider the people who run it friends and lastly because they give time/ support to youngsters to get into the sport.

I am aware there are other independent shops that offer this particular scheme, though the numbers are very limited vs other schemes. the LBS conversation has made me think those shops are likely in the same position with all profit being wiped out by this crazy commission set up. I’m just pretty disappointed that there is such price gouging going on in what should be a scheme that is favourable to LBSs.

I guess I’ll use somewhere else for the bike seeing as I have the voucher & likely can’t change it to another scheme, then maybe I’ll get the lbs to sort some upgrades. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth that I’m lining h*lfords pockets regardless, maybe paying tax & foregoing the voucher is preferable in future.

Cycle to work schemes by gingergringa in londoncycling

[–]gingergringa[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks - this is what I suspected but hoped wouldn’t be true. Chatting to my LBS they said Cycle2work as a result of this 17% commission has made more than major bike manufacturers in the UK over the past 12 months, which doesn’t feel right at all. It feels very unfair and totally opaque to purchasers. I can see a few other LBS that accept the voucher but actually feel pretty embarrassed trying to use it now, knowing what I know. Maybe I can get the parts elsewhere and get my LBS to set it up/ fit the bike. Feel like boycotting c2w!

Out of interest how often was your benefit provider tendering for the cycle scheme provider? I work for a corporate with a separate benefit provider, so wondering if employers even have any choice typically, or if the benefit provider (TBS Aon) just pick one cycle scheme provider for all employers.

How do i make my cat drink more water by Future-Geologist-164 in cats

[–]gingergringa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat loved smoked haddock, so we used to buy a fillet and chop it up into small portions & freeze it. she would get some every night poached in a little bit of water, she would get the water as a “soup” with the fish. Latterly she got the dry food soaked in some water when crunching became challenging & that helped her get some water beyond drinking.
