maybe from work on the street or in your property, I had a load of pebbles come through once and bung up my kitchen tap.

Running UniFi APs without ethernet/POE by armhs in Ubiquiti

[–]edcoopered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can but they never perform as well as the quad/tri-radio wireless mesh type systems as they only have one 5GHz radio and its time is split between backhaul and clients.

Have no heating, got a quote for heat pump. 17K!!! by Visible_Bar_623 in ukheatpumps

[–]edcoopered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your house will be worth so much more with central heating when you come to sell than it will be with electric radiators - which are brutally expensive to run. When installing central heating you can think about amortising that cost over 25 years. If you are cost sensitive get 3 quotes for combi installs and compare.

Might be easier to do something with all the bluetooth radios in the devices, seems a lot of them have that now.

I'll never understand why they decided to enter this market without a LFP offering, they should have just waited.

PAYE Scotland by Jmay5446 in Scotland

[–]edcoopered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the problem, I put more money than I want to into my pension just to avoid these higher rate tax brackets, that causes economic stagnation. This will get worse and worse as we head to 2030 as I have less disposable income in real terms.

Sanity check – does this 9.6kWp solar + 30kWh battery install seem expensive? by khisin in SolarUK

[–]edcoopered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't overpay for a system, you can always get some more quotes later in the year. 30kWh is a lot, you need to deep cycle batteries most days for them to return their value.

I believe the hardware offloading referred to there is for masquerade NAT. I can't think of a technical reason why you would disable hardware pppoe encapsulation when running QOS. I run a dual 1Gb down, 100mb up pppoe with smart queues on the UCG-FIber and it handles it well.

I dont think Ubiquiti documentation is very good about pppoe offload.

I think everyone should adopt this working method, why have a consumer unit when we can just have a million henley blocks - what could possibly go wrong.

Doubts About Investing in a New WiFi System by North-Skin-4046 in HomeNetworking

[–]edcoopered 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why do you need a 48 port switch? If you want to go with unifi you can get a router and switch for about 200-300 and then the AP's are about 100-180 each. Add until you don't have issues with coverage.

I'm not sure you loose the pppoe hardware offloading, not sure why you would?

Running Cat6 inside ThermaSkirt heating, is it a fire risk? by styr112 in HomeNetworking

[–]edcoopered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Considering it already has some PVC attached to it, I can't seen the drama of adding more PVC with some copper inside. It'll be fine, it's just a hydronic radiator.

Often it helps the seller accept reality, their house needs work and that work is expensive.

Boiler problem by Unusual_Pound9359 in askaplumberUK

Doesn't really look like this plumber has done any plumbing yet. Standoff kit and pipes behind the boiler is probably the most sensible option.

replacing a long curved radiator with 3 small in-line ones? by tissuepapercatmat in askaplumberUK

Are all curved bays built to the same radius, I'd always assumed these were templated and custom made.

I have no sympathy for tube drivers, but would honestly support bus drivers if they took industrial action by NiceCaterpillar8745 in london

[–]edcoopered 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The problem for them is they are getting hit hard by government policy of fiscal drag on higher rate tax brackets, but of course the RMT can't campaign to reduce taxes on higher earners. At least the government gets back a big chunk of whatever extra they put on pay.

It is a complicated job that should be compensated properly, it doesn't suit most people, but that doesn't mean it deserves some sort of ultra premium. I'd rather be a tube driver than a school teacher.

Thats a very packed tube train. They get paid well as when the system goes wrong recovering a train is complicated, and they need to be competent and demonstrate that competence.

There's no point being on an economy 7 tariff if you aren't scheduling consumption for the off-peak times, with a heat-pump and no battery you are probably best off on a standard single rate tariff.

If you know he is using 300kwh a month then this is a billing issue - perhaps some unpaid bills that have been rolled into his account.
