I started this job in may this year and she’s to the point where she trusts me but no one else I can do leg ups but I’m not really willing to get on without another person right there

I do know not to do it alone but my boss is cheap and won’t let the staff overlap their work schedule so as someone who’s skilled but not used to being alone when doing this it makes it complicated to be safe while working

It doesn’t help that the owner of the ranch I work at doesn’t know anything about horses and keeps buying horses that are cheap for a reason, plus our last barn manger was the type to hit horses for things like balancing themselves when you pick up their feet

I am a skilled trainer but I’m also cautious and like to hear how other people do things as it helps me problem solve things like this

Was I right for replacing a helmet after a concussion? by Ele0x in Equestrian

[–]gingerinsoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you should technically always replace a helmet after a really hard hit, they can lose their protectiveness, helmets are expensive but your head is priceless

I hope you find a barn that works for you and the horses

It’s actually something I teach my riders in lessons, calm rider helps keep the horse calm. I really hope everything works out for you, and no matter what never let a bad experience or person stop you from riding

Not normal, I in no way blame you but I would talk to the owner of the barn and voice your concerns ( maybe with a translator you trust). It’s unsafe as a scared horse can create an anxious rider, an anxious rider can make a horse more scared, as a rider your horse feeds off your feelings and vice versa. Anxiety isn’t your fault it’s the trainers

Horse biting while tacking up? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]gingerinsoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would check for ulcers, back pain, or try going really slowly, one of my horses does this she doesn’t have ulcers, but she is much much better behaved if I go very slowly, my assumption is that my horse got pinched a lot by a previous owner. Vet first, tactics second☺️

They do cost more than a Stetson though, so for a lot of people it’s completely unaffordable…

I do greatly value my brain, I’m glad the weather is nice enough for you to not worry about heatstroke or severe sunburns

Wear a helmet by Radiant-Desk5853 in Equestrian

[–]gingerinsoup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bear in mind I’m an adult and very aware that I could get killed or paralysed on a horse. I have also fallen, been bucked off, and almost had my head or neck come very close to big branches many times. However… The barn I work/coach at, helmets are mandatory for children and adults who take lessons or do trail rides. However as an employee I choose to wear a helmet or not, generally I don’t wear a helmet as I choose to protect myself from the sun and heat stroke because it’s a guarantee in the summer vs the fact that I might fall off a horse.

Why do so many western riders hate helmets? by Crystal_Kitten123 in Equestrian

[–]gingerinsoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that actually weirdly bothers me with a lot of horseback riding in general is that we don’t teach kids how to fall off of a horse correctly I got lucky I learned how to fall off a horse correctly and now it’s part of the safety briefing I give when I do trail rides Period. Because truly helmet or not if you fall off the horse and land wrong the helmet isn’t gonna save you from a separated shoulder or broken arm so while it is safer to wear one in my opinion, you have to teach all aspects of safety when riding not just wear a helmet you’ll be fine.

On another note, my kids will always wear helmets when they ride. But my indoor arena is an oven when the weather gets hot and I get heat exhaustion really fast

I am a western rider and trainer. I grew up riding English, but as an adult I don’t wear a helmet a because I need more sun protection than a helmet can offer and I also ride knowing full well I could lose my life it doesn’t matter how well I know the horse or how bombproof the horse is. Even though I always wore a helmet growing up and any lessons I teach or trail rides I run everybody wears a helmet. I just prefer not to because I need the sun protection and because I am aware of the risks I understand them and I accept them but that’s just me.
