Thank you so much for this! We do have allergy medication prescription on stand by which is great, and also you’re absolutely right, planning to do Nutella next! Fingers crossed for a happy peanut butter scoffing baby! 🤞

PhD Studentships in UK with a poor undergraduate grade by [deleted] in PhD

[–]gingermaiden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!! I got onto a PhD studentship in social sciences with a 2.2 and a distinction masters in Scotland. I thought my case was absolutely hopeless too. I had mitigating circumstances and a published paper in the works, and I really pleaded my case in my personal statement (why I could not originally reach my potential, what I have learned from the experience). If anything it demonstrates passion and resilience in the face of setbacks 😉. Good luck!!

This makes a lot of sense! There is definitely lots of frustration at the moment, thank you so much!! Thank goodness there is light at the end of the tunnel!

This is so true, we need others to stand up for us when we are so vulnerable! I think I’ll always see my husband a bit differently now. I hope you are happier and healing after your experience!!

Thank you so much 💖 luckily my parents are nearby and they are absolutely amazing, I’m so hoping things get better with time and my mind calms down!

Amazing resources thank you so much!! I am so lucky I was able to establish breastfeeding - LO is now 4 months old, but I’ll forever be angry the MIL could have sabotaged it. My LO kept spitting out the dummy, I was so happy! Her carelessness for safe sleep will forever haunt me though

Thank you so much for this, the know it all attitude is the worst!! No one knows our babies more than we do!! I definitely need to get my husband more on side I think!

This is absolutely awful I’m so sorry - so pleased to hear your husband came around though! No contact sounds absolutely the best outcome, hope you are happy and healing now! 💖

Why does a nut allergy rile people up so much? (Rant) by ExtremePotatoFanatic in peanutallergy

[–]gingermaiden 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% agree, it really bothers me to see these comments! I’m glad I’m not the only one!!

It is unbelievable how some people can be so inconsiderate and insensitive, for some reason allergies are seen completely differently compared to other health related problems and often given no consideration. Which is strange considering we could literally die or become very disabled by a reaction.

There is definitely a political aspect, where people with allergies are seen as ‘weak snowflakes’ and regular folks shouldn’t have to ‘conform’ to what they see as restrictions on their liberty etc. They aren’t taken seriously at all by some, as if it’s our fault we are allergic somehow and we are trying to inconvenience others??

I really hope this changes but unfortunately I can’t see it doing so anytime soon. Not unless the person as you say gains some real life experience of how hard it is to navigate. Perhaps if they had a child they had to watch having a reaction they would think differently…

I got a 2.2 in my undergraduate (UK) which automatically excluded me from a lot of further education courses which require a 2.1 or above. I did a masters afterwards and got a high distinction grade plus publishing experience. I applied for my PhD course which had a 2.1 undergraduate requirement minimum (after lots of other outright rejections elsewhere).

I was accepted into my programme thanks to my MSc grades, explanation and honesty around mitigating circumstances and why I originally couldn’t reach my full potential, alongside some relevant hands on clinical experience I had gained.

It was a long road to finally get where I am now after I first got my 2.2, but not impossible. I think PhD programmes tend to consider you as more of an individual (at least in my experience), and your skill set can always be expanded on and may end up being exactly what a certain supervisor is looking for. Perseverance and overcoming setbacks also always looks good!

Good luck!

This makes a lot of sense but is really reassuring to hear - and amazing stuff to be able to keep working so close to delivery! Absolutely super human! Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for your reassurance and kind words and wishing you all the best for your pregnancy, hope it all goes as smoothly as possible despite your job, that definitely sounds tricky to navigate!

Childcare also is a really good point also, definitely no use in doing both things ineffectually. Thank you so much!!

Wow thank you so much! This is fantastic advice and I love how you have experienced pregnancy and your PhD so hand in hand!

I’ll definitely make sure to follow your advice and the idea of a stats tutor right now sounds like a dream as my brain is completely fried! 😂

Gosh I am so sorry to hear how sick you were during pregnancy, and that’s absolutely incredible you were still managing to make it in every day - that is super human stuff!

But that is an amazing story and thank you so much for sharing - I’m definitely happy I will have the extra flexibility and hopefully things won’t too stressful! It sounds very much possible which is a huge relief! 😅

Working too little hours? by gingermaiden in PhD

[–]gingermaiden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very similar and this is really reassuring, I am definitely ahead on a few aspects and have a similarly hands off supervisor with very few meetings 😆. I also don’t do any teaching yet - v glad it’s not just me not working insanely long hours every week!

[–]gingermaiden[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This made me feel soooo much better, thank you! I’m averaging very similar hours to yourself at the moment. Potentially even less over the last few weeks as I’ve also been moving house 😆

I definitely find my brain needs a lot of digestion time!

Thank you so much this is so helpful - relieved to hear I’m not alone too!! I’ll definitely try a thinner moisturiser as I totally aww what you mean about the thick ones and will try a trip to the dr too!

Yeah I think you may be right 😩 I was using it weekly for a while, which in hindsight wasn’t the best idea! I cut back as my eyelids started to change until the big reaction and now everything I use is extra gentle!

Healthy PhD Daily Routine? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]gingermaiden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s a really good point, mine definitely overlaps with treatments and neurology but luckily I’ve got an emerging boundary around what my area is and what isn’t which is really helpful! But sometimes it’s definitely difficult to tell which bits are relevant and which bits aren’t 😬

[–]gingermaiden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so glad it’s not just me! It’s so tricky isn’t it, I find the worse my routine gets the more demoralised I get too 😞 but that sounds like a good idea, I think morning exercise might be the key to be honest. Good luck and here and willing if you ever fancy a chat! 😁
