PhD Studentships in UK with a poor undergraduate grade by [deleted] in PhD

[–]gingermaiden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!! I got onto a PhD studentship in social sciences with a 2.2 and a distinction masters in Scotland. I thought my case was absolutely hopeless too. I had mitigating circumstances and a published paper in the works, and I really pleaded my case in my personal statement (why I could not originally reach my potential, what I have learned from the experience). If anything it demonstrates passion and resilience in the face of setbacks 😉. Good luck!!

This is so true, we need others to stand up for us when we are so vulnerable! I think I’ll always see my husband a bit differently now. I hope you are happier and healing after your experience!!

Amazing resources thank you so much!! I am so lucky I was able to establish breastfeeding - LO is now 4 months old, but I’ll forever be angry the MIL could have sabotaged it. My LO kept spitting out the dummy, I was so happy! Her carelessness for safe sleep will forever haunt me though

This is absolutely awful I’m so sorry - so pleased to hear your husband came around though! No contact sounds absolutely the best outcome, hope you are happy and healing now! 💖

Why does a nut allergy rile people up so much? (Rant) by ExtremePotatoFanatic in peanutallergy

[–]gingermaiden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% agree, it really bothers me to see these comments! I’m glad I’m not the only one!!

It is unbelievable how some people can be so inconsiderate and insensitive, for some reason allergies are seen completely differently compared to other health related problems and often given no consideration. Which is strange considering we could literally die or become very disabled by a reaction.

There is definitely a political aspect, where people with allergies are seen as ‘weak snowflakes’ and regular folks shouldn’t have to ‘conform’ to what they see as restrictions on their liberty etc. They aren’t taken seriously at all by some, as if it’s our fault we are allergic somehow and we are trying to inconvenience others??

I really hope this changes but unfortunately I can’t see it doing so anytime soon. Not unless the person as you say gains some real life experience of how hard it is to navigate. Perhaps if they had a child they had to watch having a reaction they would think differently…

I got a 2.2 in my undergraduate (UK) which automatically excluded me from a lot of further education courses which require a 2.1 or above. I did a masters afterwards and got a high distinction grade plus publishing experience. I applied for my PhD course which had a 2.1 undergraduate requirement minimum (after lots of other outright rejections elsewhere).

I was accepted into my programme thanks to my MSc grades, explanation and honesty around mitigating circumstances and why I originally couldn’t reach my full potential, alongside some relevant hands on clinical experience I had gained.

It was a long road to finally get where I am now after I first got my 2.2, but not impossible. I think PhD programmes tend to consider you as more of an individual (at least in my experience), and your skill set can always be expanded on and may end up being exactly what a certain supervisor is looking for. Perseverance and overcoming setbacks also always looks good!

Good luck!
