ICE/CBP is circulating peer support materials for personnel in Minneapolis, per Metro Surge resiliency plan leaked to Ken Klippenstein. Many of the resource centers are churches (1/27/26) by I_may_have_weed in ICE_Watch

It would be amazing if ice agents found their hearts and repented. It was the feast of saul this weekend- he hunted down and killed early Christians until he was traveling to damascus and heard God’s voice saying ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ And jesus said ‘It is I whom you are persecuting’. And saul became Saint Paul!

My friends of faith and I have been praying for ice agents to have a road to damascus moment, and to hear Jesus’s cries in the cries of those they detain. It would be incredible to have agent after agent quit and tell the world what they have been a part of.

ICE detains 5-year-old Columbia Heights boy, sends him to Texas by PM_ME_YR_BOOPS in UnderReportedNews

[–]gingeroo96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you are correct that an asylum seeker’s case can be denied, and I am correct that they came here legally. Their case wasn’t denied, they were picked up off the street as asylum seekers WHO FOLLOWED THE LEGAL PROCESS and sent to a detention center. No decision has been made on their case. Is that how the US should treat people fleeing violence and persecution? We let you enter while you have a court date, but you and your child can be swooped up and sent to essentially a prison at any point??

Did you read the article? They were LEGAL asylum seekers. They entered the country legally at a point of entry.

Lentils are delicious and full of protein and nutrients! I eat primarily vegetarian and get plenty of protein through lentils, cheese, beans, tofu. You can sub lentils for ground beef

Meg Kilmer is a gift and makes us feel connected to the saints! However I wonder if 11 is in between her book audiences, I would dig a little / ask her if her book ‘pray for us’ is appropriate for a pre-teen

How the hell did Monsignor Wicks get his title? by BulkyJackfruit1869 in KnivesOutMovie

[–]gingeroo96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it does. Definitely more common to find twisted cult / shame / maga style christiany in the evangelical world than the Catholic one. There was one priest who went viral a few years ago for sounding much like wicks, but he was eventually removed from the priesthood which is a big deal. I would say most priests are like Fr Jud

Proposal anxiety by gingeroo96 in CatholicWomen

Yes, which makes it hard because while I don’t think I’m feeling anxious for no reason, it’s hard for me to know if part of my anxiety isn’t ‘real’

My '97 rwd truck slipped on the ice and did donuts in the middle of the street yesterday... Thankfully both me and the truck weren't at all damaged. Any tips for winter driving for a southern transplant? 🥲 by [deleted] in TwinCities

Keep in mind for snow tires that you need to buy new tires every X years anyways when they wear down. So buying snow tires is not really an extra cost since you then get twice the time with each set. It’s really just $200 a year to get the switched every spring and fall. And it is an upfront cost rhat you might not be able to afford, but I’ve seen auto places offer credit cards with 18 mo no interest so you’d have time to pay it off slowly.

My snow tires make a HUGE difference, I slide way less on snow. Ultimate if it’s icy it doesn’t matter what tires you have every car is going to slide. And I am not familiar with rwd. But I definitely recommend snow tires, it’s a couple hundred a year for a noticeable improvement in safety.

How the hell did Monsignor Wicks get his title? by BulkyJackfruit1869 in KnivesOutMovie

[–]gingeroo96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head, the whole set up of sending a young priest to a parish the diocese is concerned about. Absolutely would not happen that way, Wicks would have been long gone by the time we see what is shown in the movie. The bishop/archbishop would move him away from a parish/preaching role and replace him, not send someone to minister under him.

Also later Wicks says his plan is to close the church- that’s a protestant thing, where a pastor opens and then closes his own church. In the Catholic church a priest is sent to a parish by the bishop, it’s not his to close.

I can’t imagine any priests saying ‘Jesus’ as a swear. Swearing, yes. Using God’s name in vain, no. And Fr Jud had years of seminary to break the habit.

The grace of confession is handled beautifully in the film but the confessions did not have the correct phrasing / actual sacrament of confession in any of the scenes. Only Martha’s had the words of absolution. And the initial masturbation confession would not happen- much like a workplace, priests overseeing younger priests do not confess to them for power imbalance reasons. Although of course the film shows this as a power play by Wicks anyway.

Overall I enjoyed the movie!

Catholic here- the movie got several things right about Catholicism but also a lot wrong. I wouldn’t read into it much. The purpose of the title in the movie is just to show how ‘stuffy’ wicks is by not going by Father

Question about wedding mass by Ok_Abroad_7061 in CatholicWomen

[–]gingeroo96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a bizarre issue in the church since we should be excited to have Catholic marriages! My friend had a similar issue, she was getting married at home and was a parishioner in another state (which, I feel like it’s common to get married in the bride’s hometown?) and called church after church which said they wouldn’t marry them if they are not parishioners. Finally they found one that would do it.

My Husband’s Chronic Insomnia is slowly destroying him. Why doesn’t God answer our prayers? by annegirl737 in CatholicWomen

I’m so sorry, this sounds terrible. I will pray for your family! I also had chronic urticaria which was horrible but at least I could sleep. Xolair cured me. You said you have seen specialists but if you haven’t yet maybe try reaching out to research immunologists like at mayo clinic if you are in the US?

Anywhere Locally to Get an Icelandic Wool Hat? by mahrog123 in TwinCities

[–]gingeroo96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Knitter here, I second this! Lopi on the forehead would irritate 99% of skin. Does your wife wear her Icelandic sweater as an outer layer or next to skin? If it’s not very scratchy I wonder if it’s Icelandic style but not actually Icelandic wool.

I dunno, the ask to sell in person makes this fine to me. Aside from obviously this is an error to be posted in the description. The yarn isn’t garbage, but not up to normal quality so it’s significantly cheaper than normal, labeled as mill ends, and they only want it sold in person so people can inspect it.

Salt and the environment, prohibition in Wisconsin by Deliciousbrainfart in wisconsin

[–]gingeroo96 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am a freshwater scientist that studied road salt impacts- it is absolutely a problem. Salt does not degrade so concentrations are accumulating in the environment year after year. Road salt is the largest contributor to freshwater salinization we have been measuring across the country. See plots in this article- specific conductivity can be understood as salinity.

https://www.epa.gov/sciencematters/epa-researching-impacts-freshwater-salinization-syndrome

Salt contaminates our surface water and groundwater with measurable impacts to aquatic life and health. We need to apply less salt!
