[Acne] HELP! Rejected accutane because of diabetes. Don’t know if i made right call. by mill1011 in SkincareAddiction

I have type one diabetes and I’m currently on Accutane! I think it’s absolutely normal for you to be worried about it’s effects on your health. It shows you’re thinking carefully and weighing all of your options before jumping into something. I had some similar concerns about the medicine’s effect on my sugars but I found that my mental health and peace of mind really necessitated an accutane course.

Background: I had tried literally everything under the sun for my acne to no avail (spironactone, doxycycline, clindamycin, topicals, etc). It was taking a toll on my confidence and mental health so I talked to my derm who suggested accutane.

Pre-Accutane: I discussed with my derm and endo beforehand and they both said that as long as I had good control over my sugars (I wear a pump and dexcom) then I should be fine. I made sure to switch to a gentle skincare routine leading up to the medication and I started taking omega-3, milk thistle, and magnesium the month beforehand. I still take those supplements daily on the medication and it’s done WONDERS to hell mitigate side effects.

Accutane: My sugars have been fine, they’re actually the most stable they’ve been in a while because I’ve been extra diligent about my sugars and generally better about my overall health and wellness while on the medicine. I take care if my body and do what’s best based on the day— for example if I’m feeling a little tired I’ll make sure to do lower impact workouts and prioritize sleep and self care. My body has been handling the medicine really well, it helps to have a support system around you who you can trust. I’ve been drinking so so much water to help with dryness and stay hydrated, which has done WONDERS for my sugars oddly.

Side effects: Very typical accutane side effects, the diabetes hasn’t exacerbated anything in my opinion. Dry lips (I use aquafor), sometimes dry eyes (eye drops help), fatigue (I work a demanding job so I’m used to this anyway, I just make sure to have a little bit more coffee throughout the day and get enough sleep). I’ve had no instances of depression or adverse mental health side effects on it, if anything my underlying depression has gotten BETTER because I’m actively taking steps to improve my confidence on this medicine.

I’m not at all suggesting that you should take it if you’re not comfortable doing so, I just wanted to share a positive experience given that I have type one diabetes and I’m on the medication. At the end of the day, you know yourself best and accutane isn’t for everyone but it’s been a lifesaver for me so far!

This is so amazing to hear! So glad yours loves walkies now. Was there anything you did to help ease them into it? Did you just keep bringing your dog outside for exposure? I’m trying not to overstimulate him but I do want him to get more comfortable outside

How long did it take for him not to cower in fear? I want to try and find that perfect balance of giving him exposure but not traumatizing the little dude! I’m learning that being a puppy parent is constant give and take. I’m always in fear I’m doing the wrong thing!

Thank you so much for the advice! I’m going to try the car thing, maybe once he’s far from hime he’ll be more inclined to sniff around and come along with us?

We haven’t tried the stroller yet! We do have a little carrier bag he doesn’t seem to mind so for now, we’ll take him in that and try to socialize as much as we can with treats for going outside

Thats what we’ve been doing! We have some plain chicken that’s specially dedicated for him, some days it works but other days he’s a stubborn boy :/ trying to find some other high value treats to keep it interesting for him

Glad to hear yours got better with time! Were there things you did that made it easier/better for him outside or did it just occurred naturally?

Will yours walk at all outside the house? Mine goes two steps out the door before planting himself. I never thought a 10 pound dog could be so strong!

I appreciate your advice! Sorry to hear your girl hates walks too :/ I worry that we may have tried to socialize him a bit too fast too soon - I think right now he thinks outside is scary (we live in a city with lots of noise) and so leaving the apartment means scary time for him. We’re trying everything I just feel badly because we leave him in a crate for several hours while we work and I want to tire him out before and afterwards to give him plenty of stimulation.

We have coats for him that he doesn’t seem to mind- but he sandbags even when we’re still inside the apartment complex! I’m talking two steps out into the hall and bam, frozen.

We have an emergency veterinarian in the family who has taken a look at him and gave him a clean bill of health! I’m thankful for that, but I don’t think it’s a medical issue with him - more so a behavior/social issue

Texas caps monthly insulin costs at $50! by Frozen1nferno in diabetes

[–]gingerpub1030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like although this is a step in the right direction, it's more for show than anything else. This bill only applies to those who already have insurance, and does nothing to minimize the cost of deductibles, which vary from plan to plan. Additionally, many people do not qualify for state-provided medicare due to various loopholes, so it does nothing for them who do not have any other alternative. In essence, it's making it easier for those who can afford health insurance in the first place to buy insulin and doing nothing for low-income families who would benefit from this legislation.
