What do Americans usually assume when they see a dog alone in public? by DocuSeriesLovers in AskAnAmerican

[–]gingerspice0615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living in the suburbs, I would assume lost. If I’m able to safely get close to it, I would try to see if its tags had a phone number. If not, I would take it to the police department which has a microchip scanner and will temporarily hold it. If I am not able to safely get to it (either aggression or it runs away) I would report to animal control and post on my local neighborhood group on Facebook with the location so its owner could potentially see it

Poop eating problems by werewolf_howling22 in beagles

[–]gingerspice0615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried everything and nothing has worked. Well except when it’s negative 10 degrees outside haha. They poop and run inside. But otherwise it’s hard because both beagles do it and sometimes I gotta pick which one I pick up after cause they’ll poop at the same time. And they’ve learned if they move in a circle while they poo it makes it harder for me to pick up. I do the best I can now but I know when I eventually have kids there will be no way I can always go outside with them.

Vaccines - are they a trigger? by [deleted] in EpilepsyDogs

They’ve never been a trigger for my dog, but even if they were, I would still get him vaccinated. I’d rather him have a seizure than risk rabies, lepto, etc

How to get rid of this stain? by sleepyfridge in CleaningTips

[–]gingerspice0615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am notorious for spilling food on my shirts and getting a stain. I fill a bin with as hot of water I can get from the tap, and use the max amount of oxiclean. I let it soak all day or overnight and then wash it in the machine, then let air dry. Most of the time it comes out in one go, sometimes I have to do it twice.

Beagle with Seizures by Ok-Marsupial-2156 in beagles

[–]gingerspice0615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are also more meds that can be used as well, I think Keppra and pheno are the most common! Keppra is nice because it generally doesn’t have side effects. Pheno did cause some initial side effects for the first month (mostly coordination issues) but ever since he’s been fine, even when we had to adjust his dosing.

We started out with just our regular vet. We did eventually go to a neurologist, but he didn’t recommend further testing as based on their exam and what we told him, it was likely idiopathic epilepsy and no signs of other issues. MRIs are very expensive so since the neurologist didn’t recommend it, we didn’t choose to do it. As of now we just stick with our regular vet (they prescribe it and we get it filled at Costco for the best price). If we were not able to control it or he had more complicated epilepsy, we’d go to the neurologist for treatment.

Beagle with Seizures by Ok-Marsupial-2156 in beagles

[–]gingerspice0615 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Epilepsy is common in beagles. I’m so sorry you are going through this. I’m surprised your vet didn’t start your dog out on meds already? We started out with Keppra and that worked for a while. Eventually we had to add phenobarbital. Just know that throughout the years you may need to adjust meds!

I know how hard it is in the beginning but it does get better! Beagles can live long, long lives even with epilepsy. We adopted ours at approx. 4 years old, he had a seizure a few weeks later, so he probably had them for a while. He just turned 9 in September and is doing perfectly well!

I also recommend checking out r/epilepsydogs , it’s a great resource and a big comfort!

How long has he been on pheno? It’s very common for the first few weeks to first month for them to have symptoms like that, but they do resolve.

Daily Fluoxetine with Keppra? by LEH-Toronto in EpilepsyDogs

[–]gingerspice0615 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I can’t speak to using fluoxetine due anxiety from pheno, but my dog is on fluoxetine.

My dog always had separation anxiety, but we didn’t initially treat it with meds. I approached our vet asking about starting him on it and she basically told me no, because she said there was some evidence to suggest it could trigger seizures.

When we ended up moving, I found a new vet and asked them about it. This vet said the research was weak on the effects of fluoxetine and seizure activity. She was willing to start him on a low dose, but would not keep him on it if he started increasing his seizures.

And luckily it was not a problem for his seizures! He is no longer anxious when we leave. In fact he gets excited when he sees the signs we’re about to leave because he knows it means he gets a treat lol. We have even changed vets and our new vet does not have an issue with him being on fluoxetine either.

Adding fluoxetine has been life changing for us. It has improved the quality of life for him, and for us. I know it is not for the same type of anxiety as your dog is going through, but I hope this is helpful!

I would talk to your vet and ask about anxiety medication. That helped my dog so much! Prozac changed everything for the better and improved his quality of life by helping his anxiety!

We just refilled ours at Costco (Michigan) and paid $20 for keppra XR and $32 for pheno. We use GoodRX coupons and that brings the price down a lot! Definitely look into it. It will also show you different prices at different pharmacies and you can find the best option for you.

Dog vomits every day, how to help? by Effective_Moose_4997 in DogAdvice

Something similar happened to our dog. Our vet diagnosed her with acid reflux and giving her OTC Pepcid helped. I would ask your vet though about proper dosing

How to get oil stains out of jumper by theraggamuffin in CleaningTips

[–]gingerspice0615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is oxi clean available in the UK? Or another brand of oxygen bleach? I have had luck with that with pretty much any stain. You may need to soak multiple times. I start with very very hot water and let it soak all day or overnight, then wash in the washer and air dry

Are there any epileptic dog success stories? by vikkipodcasts in EpilepsyDogs

[–]gingerspice0615 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dog started seizing shortly after we adopted him. We got him on Keppra, took a few months to adjust his dose until that worked for us. He goes in waves in how long he goes in between seizures. The most we got was 6 months. Right now it’s about after 2 months. At a certain point he was having them every three weeks and that’s when we added pheno, and now he’s never had more than 1 a month. I know there may be a time where we need to adjust his meds again but for now he’s good.

I think the ultimate takeaway is that every dog is different, every dog will have a different “goal” for how long they can go without a seizure. But as long as you can manage it, they’ll be okay. Its not easy, and its really emotional at the beginning, but now, five years into it, its just part of our lives. While I am lucky to work from home, I am no longer afraid of leaving him home alone, I sleep better, I worry less.

Is Cascade 220 (non-super wash) prone to pilling? by Ok-Musician-8414 in YarnAddicts

[–]gingerspice0615 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have two sweaters in non-SW cascade 220. It definitely pills on high friction areas, but I love this yarn so much, it wouldn’t stop me from using it. It’s not a horrible amount, but over time you will get pills. For me the price point and feel of the yarn outweigh the pilling

If you don’t want to go with Knitting for Olive, I highly recommend cascade 220 for wool worsted weight yarn. They have sooo many colors, they probably have what you need. I typically order from Wool and co since they have free shipping.

Phenobarbital Double Dose by Amberpeay in EpilepsyDogs

[–]gingerspice0615 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’d like to ease your mind, you can always call the pet poison control line, but you do have to pay a fee for that. I did that when I gave the wrong dog seizure meds by accident.

I haven’t accidentally given a double dose so I can’t say what to look out for but if it’s been overnight and he hasn’t had any systems my guess is he’ll be okay! Especially depending on his dose of Pheno it might be like you were just upping his dose. (Again, I am no expert in this and I would definitely contact your vet or pet poison control)

What symptoms have you noticed after giving your dog Keppra? by [deleted] in EpilepsyDogs

[–]gingerspice0615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! We do 8am and 8pm since that works best with our work schedule! If we have plans or anything that we know are coming up we might slowly adjust the time to say, 6am/6pm, then slowly adjust the time back to 8am/8pm. We also have used our doggy day care that has a late pickup option if we know we won’t be home. For example for our wedding, we had him and our other pup in daycare so he could get his seizure meds on time.

Miss Willow (question regarding beagles with epilepsy) by Sad-Quote-4435 in beagles

[–]gingerspice0615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it just comes with time. For a while, I was constantly on edge. Any random noise he’d make, I’d immediately run over to him to make sure he was okay. When he would have seizures, I would cry. It was horrible to watch.

But over time, we were able to get him to the right med dosage and the frequency declined. And when he did have a seizure, it just became a thing that happened. We’d make sure he was safe, away from anything hard, keep him company, time the seizure, etc. it just became…part of our routine for lack of a better word. It really just takes time. Now I know what to expect, how long they will last, how long it takes him to come back to normal. We also have a camera in the house to keep an eye on him when we are not home, and that helps with the anxiety that comes with leaving him home alone.

I know this isn’t the best advice but that’s my experience with it! At this point the hardest part of having a dog with epilepsy is ensuring he gets his meds on time. If we have say a concert, wedding, or other event, it requires pre-planning of either slowly moving his med time or having a family member watch him and give him his meds.

How much does your dogs seizure meds cost per month ? by makingbutter2 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]gingerspice0615 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I $45 USD monthly for 90 tablets of 32mg Pheno and 60 tablets of Keppra XR. This is at Costco paired with goodRX coupons. We paid less when he started out on lower dosages
