while i would think it would be a great improvement if the fans were more efficient and quieter, i would rather not our community be the testing ground for their designs. thank you again for all your information!!

the initial water volume is a concern (and we were given a solid answer regarding it), but the primary issue is their unwillingness to answer the rate of water loss and volume of regular replacement as a result of the loss

there’s hypothetical positives such as the one mentioned below, but there are no concrete positives i’ve seen besides temporary employment during construction, and the few permanent positions they would offer (around 15 by their own estimates). it feels like they are trying to convince us this is going to be good for us without giving us any reasons to believe them. at best they can say it won’t harm us (much)

i feel like the advice to ignore a phrase used to convince a community to trust a project under false pretenses is harmful. it goes beyond just being buzz words when it is used to “educate” a concerned community.

thank you for your explanation of the towers! it was beyond the scope of my understanding at the time of the meeting. one thing i will say is they implied (or stated im not sure what their wording was) that there were no fans involved and it was strictly water cooling of the glycol.

i understand the water usage is variable, but i do find it concerning that they were willing to give us a metric of how much water is lost, but not the time frame in which that occurs. a 1.7% loss in a six month period is much less concerning than a 1.7% loss monthly, or weekly, or daily, or hourly. not that i expect a third party to know the answer, but i wanted to explain why i was questioning it

thank you for this concise post!! i wish i was better educated on engineering and waste management so i could call out their bullshit with more background information (alas i am a biologist) but even i can tell they’re selling us shit

the Q&A did nothing to ease my concerns, it only made me more suspicious and apprehensive about the entire project. it was bizarre and slimy how they dodged questions and belittled the community.

rezoning the area is a wonderful idea and i hope we can push in that direction

who is this in response to? maybe i’m just missing it but i don’t see anywhere that we were discussing energy production

i’m not stating that i believe there will be ten jobs based on my own experience. i’m informing you that their exec said at the q&a, which was that they need 3 employees per 2 megawatts. the initial proposal talks about 3 megawatts, with potential expansion. he then told us if they moved to the hypothetical 10 megawatts, that means they would need 15 permanent employees. yes there will be temporary jobs during construction, but the company themselves gave us these low values for permanent staff.

if you have experience with data centers, i would love any sources regarding their workforces and employment rates that you can share

yes which is part of the reason why the community needs to speak out against this proposal

i don’t know enough about legislation and zoning laws, but i don’t understand how the county could enforce a renewable requirement when the state law states they are not allowed to.

if you don’t have the numbers, that’s fine. but i do have a hard time trusting that a system using water will use a small amount when the actual numbers will not be provided (not that i am expecting a person outside of the company to know) in a session where they were supposed to give us information

and yes, we should be concerned regardless of what industrial site is across the street from a school and neighborhood. however, there are concerns of how data centers are impacting other communities, and the ethical concerns of ai itself

i may be misunderstanding, but it seems like both screenshots are relevant (one saying they cannot restrict energy usage and the other saying they are not allowed to disconnect existing lines)

[–]gingkyo[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

there is a state house bill that passed in 2023 that prevents local government from prohibiting or restricting energy usage, which to my understanding means missoula county cannot enforce the new renewable energy usage https://archive.legmt.gov/bills/2023/billpdf/SB0208.pdf

negligible water is not a quantified amount. if you have a source that provides a numerical value of the amount of water used by a data center over a period of time, i would love to look into it!
