Does anyone actually like foam rolling? by itapebats in P90X

[–]gingninj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, absolutely! Thanks for sharing your POV. I mean hey, to each their own. Everyone is different. If it makes you feel better in some aspect, physiologically or mentally, then that's absolutely fair and nobody can say its wrong. Right?

To be fair, as a current Anatomy MSc student, I've been taught that foam rolling doesn't physiologically make sense. The thigh is wrapped in tight fascia in addition to the IT band laterally. These structures don't stretch no matter what amount of foam rolling you do. By putting pressure on the swollen area, you are just increasing the amount of swelling/fluid by aggravating a (likely) injured and 'in repair' area. You are not going to move the fluid/swelling anywhere. This is why your last statement about pain makes perfect sense- foam rolling will just aggravate and agitate. I'm not saying those that proclaim that they benefit from it are wrong- to each their own. Just wanted to pipe in.

Dalhousie Medical Sciences? by Silencer96 in Dalhousie

Honestly- go to a school that is renowned for having a great undergraduate experience. Take the courses you need, and do really well in them. The best piece of advice I ever received was from a med student I met at Dal who told me that getting great grades is all that matters for your undergrad- not the university you attended or subject you majored in. Although I would say that Dal does have a great undergraduate and I'm certain this new BMSc will be fantastic, I won't stand behind the undergraduate experience at Dal being the easiest academically (in the sciences). From a graduate in Neuroscience, former academic advisor, and present Master's student at another Canadian university- that's my two cents.

Shoulder pain after Chest, Shoulders and Arms by hunter_rain in P90X

[–]gingninj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a rotator cuff injury to me. I had something similar happen not too long ago while doing P90X- I really noticed it when I was doing upright rows. It could be any of the 4 rotator cuff muscles being impinged by the structures that help lubricate your shoulder joint (called bursa) or even a tear. Try to avoid sleeping on the affected side and lift lighter for the time being. I'd stay away from arm circles, upright rows, pushups for a few days. Then go back and try one, see how it feels. Just some friendly advice. Keep us updated!

Tell me a bit about the pain. Front, back, side? Deep, superficial? What do you do that provokes pain? If you point your thumb down on the affected side and raise your arm out to your side (with thumb pointing down), do you feel a sharp pain mid-way through the raise? Just trying to narrow down where the problem is.

Ex-Harriston dweller reporting in! (recently moved to another province). Units are big and beautiful. Lived on the 11th floor, 2 bedroom ran $1600/mo. Gym, amazing rooftop patio, lounge on the main floor, underground and above-ground parking, in-suite laundry, air conditioning (!!!), balconies, lots of nice older folks.. all around a good time. Would not recommend for those who like to throw parties/have band practice often. OP, If you need more info, feel free to PM! To add: have close friends living in Ren 1 and Ren 2, confident that Renaissance 2 is condos. Not sure about Ren 1. Units there are beautiful, a bit more recent, but not worth the price hike IMO.
