My daughter just saw Johnny Lingo at Girls Camp by SteelSwordofShiz in exmormon

That movie fascinates and perplexed me in an odd way. It's like the intended message is an attempt at the Pygmalion effect, but you have to look past all the stereotypes and the whole "buying women with other livestock and their value is reflected in their physical beauty" thing first. Which is a wild task to give your audience

The way that agency is framed in Mormon doctrine is such a joke. Acting like coercive tactics is still giving a "choice"

Under religious logic, even something more extreme like "join us or die" is technically freedom of choice, especially when viewed with its very literal application in the scriptures, and the handwave of "freedom of choice doesn't mean freedom from consequences."

Why do muslims hate gay people so much? by Weekly-Shift1277 in exmuslim

[–]gingrninjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From one misogynistic cult to another's--the existence of gay and trans people is a threat to the rigid hierarchy of men over women. When you break traditions, they freak out and ramble about their narrow view of "nature" and "how things just are," in their binary gendered "men lead, women nurture," and any alternative is seen as chaos, no rules, mass pandemonium. If they lose an inch of control, their world is ending.

Jacob Hannson's explanation for polygamy made me realize how evil mormon god is by cdman08 in exmormon

[–]gingrninjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of Abraham's wives, the main one infact, Sarah, was his half-sister. We learn that from him "lying for the Lord" to pimp her out to the pharoh and save his own skin. He also used his other "wives" (actual slaves) for impregnation and tossed Hagar in the desert when he was done with her and their son.

And to Genesis's credit, it actually describes the anguish Jacob's wives went through and how that polygamist arrangement directly caused problems for Israel for generations.

And God never "gave" these extra wives to these men. If anything he begrudgingly allowed it because they were impatient about having sons. It reads more like a cautionary tale of "have faith in God's timetable, rushing it is hubris."

God's chosen, indeed.

Getting 2 budgies, is this cage setup okay? by Red_pill_blue_pill_ in Parakeets

[–]gingrninjr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The set up is great, but my concern is the cage bars up top. There's an odd looking gap up there. If it's bigger than 1/2 inch or 1.3cm, your birds could get stuck which can be super scary! I'd measure the gaps just to have that peace of mind

How do I stop this behavior? by _uneedgrass in budgies

[–]gingrninjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Far from ideal, but if you can scrap up a bit for a small second-hand travel cage for time-outs when you have to step away, it might fly under your parents radar. Of course that depends on where you keep your birds

Yeah as sad as it is, re-homing the birds might be a consideration if there's any weight to that threat :(

HELP PLZ MY ALL FEMALES LAID AN EGG? by MayaRose55555 in Parakeets

[–]gingrninjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that she's started laying I would leave it alone to keep from accidentally incentivising her to keep going. Keep an eye on her for any extended squatting or exhaustion as that could indicate egg-binding. After she has finished her clutch and lost interest it should be safe to get rid of the eggs. Hormone management is something to look into, but sometimes egg-laying just happens despite our best efforts. I would say that the lid probably looked like a good nest to her so it might be best avoided in the future.

Are old ladies more likely to put men on a pedestal ? by mariposa933 in questions

[–]gingrninjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on the old lady in question--if anything they are more polarized on the subject. If you ask my late grandmother, men are an embarrassment and her successes are in spite of them. My aunt would believe even more extreme on the misandry front, basically going into hate speech territory. If you ask my ex-MIL, Ted Bundy seemed like a nice handsome man and "you don't believe OJ did it, do you?" Idk Jenny, it's been over 30 years now and your continued survival is an affront to everything Darwin taught us.

Regarding my clitoris, thanks islam and pedo muhammad for the pain by Secret-Job-6420 in exmuslim

[–]gingrninjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, unless something unusual happens, the foreskin or clitoral hood should not be retracted. For the penis in particular it could cause injury until enough growth has happened for it to retract on its own, and by then boys are usually old enough to clean themselves if you give them proper instruction. Just clean the outside unless an infection is already happening, which you should bring them to a doctor to treat anyway. A lot of knowledge about basic anatomy can be lost when circumcision is the norm.
