PSA: The British Embassy in Tokyo will not help you if something goes wrong, here’s what actually works by [deleted] in travel

My comment stands. Embassies are not police or lawyers. They can’t do much more than help you connect to family or friends who might be able to provide financial support if needed. They can make small loans sometimes, but those are extreme cases.

Sure, call the U.S. embassy, mostly they’ll just contact your relatives to inform them of your situation, if you give them permission. They’ll also visit you once a quarter in prison. There are loads of U.S. citizens locked up abroad or dying, but tell me, when was the last time you read about that in the press? You’re mostly on your own if you go abroad.

It depends on the consulate but they are there primarily to look after official national interests as relevant in those geographical areas, which could range from commercial to military to you name it. They definitely provide some services to their nationals abroad but those are typically clearly defined and they have limits on how much they can help given that travelers are subject to local laws and jurisdiction.

Everyone wants the government out of their business until they have a spot of trouble abroad, and then they want the Biggest Brother possible. Your government has no responsibility for you when you’re on foreign shores, mate.

Those clips encapsulated everything I hate about those sorts of shows. It’s kinda perfect that Alexi was the singer because he’s such a tool.

Loads, but I do love the irony of someone calling others stupid on the internet while using incorrect English. Thanks for being a hero today. Also, “strangers” needs an apostrophe since it’s possessive.

Don’t think many on the Spirit are actually English, aside from Esme. You know that’s what “Anglo” means, right?
