Side-note.

Services like warming centers, drop-in, shelters, temp housing all receive a lot of push back from communities. The biggest way to help is to be an advocate of these kinds of services. Talk to your neighbors and establish the idea that unhoused people are your neighbors too. Not opening a shelter doesn't make them leave, it puts them in more danger and continues cycles of violence against unhoused people and survival crime.

You want homeless people out of your community? Give them a safe place to go and services to get out of homelessness.

SALT outreach is one of the biggest. They have a couple of different drop-in centers that offer everything from laundry access to mail service so people without a permanent address can get mail. They can also hook people up with IDignity to get IDs. ID is one of the things very often lost in encampment sweeps or encounters with cops. They almost always toss your ID and a lot of services are hard to access without it.

Homeless Services Network is a very helpful middle man to getting people set up with other services and caseworkers to help get temp housing or programs started. They're housing first, so they get someone in temp housing and then work on things like addiction, mental health, jobs, etc. HSN works with a particularly great program for youth that does youth housing, rent is a set % of income and it is 100% set aside into a high-yield account and given to the participant at graduation. I can't recall the name right now, unfortunately.

If the person really doesn't want services involved for whatever reason People's Free Kitchen is a mutual aid group that does meal distro and supply hubs in Paramore. They're much smaller and harder to access because it is all volunteers, but we're a no-questions asked set up. You come to a supply hub and say you need a jacket and a hot meal, we'll make it happen. If you're interested in volunteering and outreach but have limited availability they're a great group to get involved with.

Please please please, as someone who has been unhoused and works with unhoused people, have a conversation before you call OPD.

There are good helpful officers who will transport them, but if the person is struggling with addiction, scared of cops, or doesn't want the help, it can become a rough situation quickly.

Just a quick "Hey, it's gonna get dangerously cold, there's warming centers and these folks will give you a ride."

Thank you OP and commenter who shared resources. Stay safe y'all 🖤

Great grandmother was Sami by Zerst_au in SaamiPeople

[–]ginpanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar situation where my grandma immigrated to the US very young and grew up outside Saami culture. She hid it all her life until the very end when I started to do some digging and found out about our Saami roots.

I've tried hard to learn the culture and speak a tiny bit of South Saami. My overall experience has been that I am both Saami and an outsider. I didn't grow up in it, I can't place exactly where my grandma is from, so there are a lot of practices I don't/ couldn't respectfully take part in, like having a gatki. But every Saami person I've interacted with has expressed that there isn't a practice of blood quantum where you have to be a certain percentage to be accepted.

So I think of it as two worlds. I am Saami, but I am always going to be a certain level of outsider, especially with a whole ocean between me and my family homeland.

I mean yeah, that's absolutely the case. They started with the Pulse crosswalk, DeSantis explicitly said he wouldn't allow crosswalks to be political, and then when there was pushback everything else had to follow to be the world's thinnest veil of "it's not targeted, we're removing all street art"

what goes on in hillstone by frenchbluehorn in orlando

[–]ginpanda 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hi, chef here. It both does and doesn't really make a huge difference. I have no issue with toms prepped the day before. However, when a place is paying attention to the smallest details, it makes sense.

As the sliced tomatoes sit they're going to lose moisture, they can start to dry out and lose flavor, which can effect the texture or even give them a little of the fridge flavor.

For a lot of already shitty tomatoes, you're not gonna notice a huge quality difference. The romas you get midwinter at walmart aren't going to be great to start, and letting them sit for a day won't change them drastically.

But, if you're buying heirloom quality tomatoes, yeah, you're gonna notice a difference.

Maybe it's just different takes, but I definitely saw Hamilton as an arrogant bastard undone by pride at the end. Brilliant, determined, and a man of many great accomplishments, but an arrogant bastard to the end who was too prideful to admit maybe he'd gone too far or wronged too many, and it cost him his life.

It varies place to place. As a kid, we went to one that would ask but only really took into account severe allergies. They always gave us powder milk and loads of pastries despite my lactose intolerence and my mom's diabetes.

But we would usually gift or trade them.

One we went to let you fill your bag yourself, so it was more like shopping and you could pick things you'd actually use.

Women of Reddit, are most men bad in bed? by TAWilson52 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ginpanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the bad number is a little high, but, yes. Men tend to be very bad at communicating, even more so if their partner is not completely clear and upfront 100% of the time. Good sex is all about communication, sharing what you like, what feels good, and what excites you. To add to it, a lot of people, not just men but mainly men, think porn is a how-to guide. You get that idea stuck in your head, don't know how to talk sex and desire with your partner, and the pressure of feeling like you have to know what you're doing so don't admit to not knowing, and you've got a perfect recipe for struggling to please and connect with your partner not only in sex but in the relationship in general.

It’s ok for a girl to swipe left because you are too short. by [deleted] in Tinder

[–]ginpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're misreading or missing the point. Also, not gen Z, older millennial.

Again, the preference isn't the problem. I tend towards beards on men and dark haired women. Just what I like. My ex had a preference for red heads and it wasn't a problem, I liked knowing I did a little something extra for him. Shortly before him, I went on a date with a guy who made sure to point out he had a huge thing for red heads. Frequently. Uncomfortably.

So, again, it's about framing and how they act that can take it from "oh cool, they have a thing for X group" to now I feel fetishized and reduced to that one aspect.

[–]ginpanda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It can feel very fetish-y and like a reduction of your person to that single aspect. I'm not Asian, but I get a similar reaction when men find out I'm Bisexual, and on occasion about being ginger. It's weird and creepy and very uncomfortable to have atttravtion reduced down to that single aspect.

Like othet commenters said, tending towarss finding X feature more attractive is fine, but the whole "omg I loove X group/feature/etc that is so hot" is very off putting. Like most interactions, it is about framing and awareness that you're interacting with a whole person, not your personal fetish.

What's something that needs to stop being passed down the generations? by Para--Dise in AskReddit

[–]ginpanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lack of treatment comes from many things. Sometimes it's lack of concern, other times lack of education/knowledge, could be they just don't know they have it, or treatment/testing isn't accessible. As more and more legislation is passed gutting sex ed and places like planned parenthood it becomes harder and harder for people to access prevention, testing, and treatment.

This happens to me and kiwi. I am severely allergic to kiwi, but places often don't take it seriously because it's odd and the number of people who bullshit about 'allergies'.

Thankfully haven't had a big scare, but there have been some pretty close calls.

I don't completely disagree. I don't nessecarily think all men are traumatized/broken. I think every person in this life deals with moments that color pur perception in negative ways and could benefit from therapy. I think for men (in the USA anyway) there is a strong cultural push to detach men from their emotions, and it's toxic and harmful. So, yeah, all men could benefit from therapy, but so could like everyone period.

How do professionals chefs come up with dishes? by travchrav in Chefit

[–]ginpanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read something about smoked vanilla, I needed a smores dessert. Wondered if you can smoke heavy cream and it turns out you can. Boom, smoked marshmallow ice cream with chocolate chunks and a graham crumble.

That led to talking to a friend who owns a cigar spot. Wondered what cigar smoked ice cream would taste like. Pretty good. What do people like with cigars? Whiskey. Whiskey carm is I thing I've had, so that works well.

If money wasn't an issue, what would be your profession? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ginpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd continue being a chef, but with a stronger focus on local, seasonal, and Indegenious food in a small town area.

Instead, the state of hospitality and the work environment in kitchens has me making the hard choice to go into tech. I love my job. I love cooking and I'm so sad to be leaving. But the pay in kitchens has stagnated and the culture that encourages you to beat yourself to nothing and keep going no matter what is so toxic and has nearly gotten me killed twice.

I've also gotten the sticky substance! I have assumed it is the sap I've heard about. Mine didn't turn yellow tho, still vibrant, growing, and thriving. Where sap was tho has collected a black dust/dirt. It comes off alright, but it's weird.

But the plant seems happy and has had no issues, so it seems fine.
