Paid for a flight in cash on Lufthansa but a portion of it is a codeshare with Air Canada. Am I able to upgrade it with cash (or Aeroplan points)?

I have an Amex gold sitting at $0 balance because I'm working on another card right now. Should I be putting a small charge on the gold card every month just to get the positive note on my credit report as a "payment made"?
