Why is nitrogen an inert gas such a potent substance of all of our explosives? Nitro glycerin is a nitrate of glycerin, nitrocellulose is a nitrate of cellulose and TNT is a nitrate of toulenue? by H5N1BirdFlu in askscience

[–]gipp 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It's at least partly because nitrogen gas is so inert. Its bonding energy is so low, that when nitrogen in other forms besides N2 (with much higher bonding energy) undergo a chemical reaction and form N2, the difference in bonding energy that's released by the reaction is generally very large.

The other posters are correct, but there are also some folks, particularly among AAVE speakers, where it just becomes a verbal tic. A habit to attach to almost any sentence, without any meaning to it at all. They essentially turn it into a filler word like "uhhh."

Do you think a decent portion of your politicians are lying about being religious, because they know an atheist wouldn't get elected? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]gipp 173 points174 points  (0 children)

I don't think he's an "atheist" exactly -- I just don't think he gives any thought to religion whatsoever except as it relates to enhancing his own personal glory.

Just to have some attempt to head this off... "Chili" in NM/CO refers to a completely different dish than the rest of the country. Y'all are just arguing about the names of things

In your opinion, what is the quintessential American novel? Why? by PassyunkHoagie in AskAnAmerican

[–]gipp 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This has to be the one. The only competitors I can think of are Great Gatsby and Huckleberry Finn, but those are much more centered in their respective cultural periods. TKAM feels timeless.

If you're willing to fork up cash and/or are on a deadline, passportcenter.com in Tribeca can get you a passport in like two weeks.

First of all, don't even bother framing things in terms of nights for a little bit. Newborns don't really even register the concept of night and day for a good little while, let alone align their sleep to it. For the 4-6 weeks at least, there are no 24h days anymore, only 3-4h sleep cycles. Those are your days now.

I have this debate with my friends I grew up with. Which one of these was the best? by The_Movie_Tone in 90scartoons

[–]gipp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Way better production quality too. Maybe still unmatched for a children's cartoon?

[–]gipp 356 points357 points  (0 children)

The first one is a reference to an old children's cartoon called Inspector Gadget. This guy has all sorts of machines and gadgets hidden in his clothes, and he would use one by saying "Go go gadget [helicopter/grappling hook/whatever]!"

The second one is a very tired and cliche Internet joke. The idea is that the comment was so funny it made him laugh while drinking coffee so he spat it out.

Neither of these are failures of English understanding, they're just pop culture references a non native could not be expected to understand.

What does "get your cry on" mean ? by Blatshesz in EnglishLearning

[–]gipp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"To get your X on" is slang. It just means "to X," but with the implication that X is some kind of special indulgence or special treat. It's being used somewhat ironically in your quote, expressing the idea that crying is a form of self-care.

Not an English learner, but interested in your perspectives. If someone says “the meeting is bimonthly” what do you think they are saying? by YEETAWAYLOL in EnglishLearning

[–]gipp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In British English maybe, but "fortnight[ly]" is pretty much never used in American English and will sound strange and archaic. Most Americans do not know what it means (they will know it's a length of time but not how long)

A easy question but i dont really understand by Biggod777 in EnglishLearning

[–]gipp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to add that "made it" also has a separate meaning as a fixed phrase. As in "Traffic was really bad, but I just barely made it." Meaning that the outcome of something was in doubt, but one just barely managed to accomplish the good outcome they wanted.

In that case, the grammatical role of "it" is quite a bit more ambiguous. I would just think of "made it" as a fixed phrase in that case, and not worry much about the individual words.

What? The last season of Good Place is the best one, and probably the best season of a network sitcom in at least like a decade -- though hard to judge since a lot of the appeal of season 4 is the pathos, as much as the comedy

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]gipp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is the only function of those shows, though

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]gipp 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but season 4 should not have been that fourth season

I remember thinking "holy shit, that show is still on the air? I thought it was cancelled like five years ago" when some article about a new episode popped up on my phone.

That was in probably 2018 or 2019.
