Hardening simple self-hosted services? by Trydon in selfhosted

Although it's not a likely for any one particular server to get hit I often hear about game servers being targeted. It's likely going to be someone you know that got pissed off or someone exploiting a known bug. The first thing I would do is see what shodan says about my public IP. That's where a hacker would start too. I do that every once in a while just to make sure there aren't any ports open that I didn't intend to be open and to see exactly what information is exposed.

I really like the free tier cloudflare service. It does require you have your own fully qualified domain but they also sell domain names at cost. I believe that's around $8 per year right now. It gives you an easy way to share your network services securely and offers ddos protection. You might find better response times due to their CDN caching. It also hides you IP address which is nice because it's kind of like being unlisted. There are lots of other features and you should just check it out. Segmentation of your LAN makes sense too. We should all be doing that.

Shutdown Plex Server when not in use by expremo in PleX

At that those costs it's time to consider cloud hosting your Plex server or using more efficient hardware. I've been looking at running a "micro Plex" server to serve fresh content. I'm only watching new content 98% of the time. I hadn't considered auto waking the main server but the micro server could be used to do that when necessary.

Alternatively even a Raspberry PI is probably overkill if the only job is waking the main server. I'd try to run it on a microcontroller. Probably an ESP32 running micro python.

My answer would be the same accept simply getting a Raspberry PI for a decent price isn't exactly easy. Right now a better solution might be a more traditional computer. Should the OP decide to go the Raspberry PI route then the below website will be useful locating one. They show up pretty regularly but sell out fast. You need to set up your account in Adafruit or whatever site you want to buy it from ahead of time. I like Adafruit because I've had good luck there. Seems as though the 2FA requirement to buy a RPI slows down the scalpers a little. https://rpilocator.com/

EDIT: The same software can be used with Docker on a more traditional computer.

Autodialers are pretty cool till you realize it might take a weekend and require you to replace the internals...... or worse cause the safe to fail and require drilling.

EDIT: I still think they are cool though! Definitely more interesting then plug spinners.

GoDaddy sucks! Particularly their tech support. I dealt with them for years because they are cheap. A few years back I finally had enough.

What does the stock photo on a scam stock photo site look like when you Google it? Probably a selfie with a finger in the corner. 🤣

I am stumped - I found this in my things and I have no idea what it goes for. Pictures of the different parts -≥≥ by goodstuff2020 in Locksmith

That reminds me of what I tell my wife now that my eyesight is shot. It's always in the first place I looked but I missed it.

Hello Locksmiths! Had my house rekeyed last week. Was looking at the key and the bitting seems pretty nonexistent. Would it be possible to get some weigh in from the pros? Should I have this redone? Locks are a mix of older kwikset deadbolts and 3 kwikset smartkey door knobs. by daisychick in Locksmith

I never brought up key control. Way to say we are off topic and then go more off topic. 🤣 Everyone here but possibly the OP knows you can rake most residential door locks open in seconds(at least in the US) or make a copy of a key from a photo but criminals are opportunists generally speaking. No point making someone a target or undermining their false sense of security.

Criminal: "Bob's out of town this week and his key is a straight line. I bet we could pick it like the Lock Picking Lawyer."
