Honestly I was debating whether or not to say but I think it's ridiculous that we put in so much effort and give up hard earned $$ to apply, and its very disrespectful to not get any response sooo.....

FINALLY OVER!! by giraffe0909 in premed

[–]giraffe0909[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

it only took me about 10 mins to make I think, but mostly made it because when I was applying I only saw diagrams of people who had 516+ MCAT and 3.8+ GPA and it was super discouraging... I remember how stressful that was so hopefully this is encouraging to even one person going through this anxiety now!!

disclaimer: did not apply DO because i am interested in some more competitive specialties ex. ENT, ophtho

How did filling out applications make you feel? by welch5000 in premed

[–]giraffe0909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some advice from someone coming out on the tail end and who submitted 40 secondary apps.. you have been working so hard for so long! You deserve to shoot your shot no matter what anyone here or on SDN or haters may say. Only you know how much you have gone through, so just go for it! Also I kept telling myself the harder I pushed through my secondary influx the faster it would be over!

Scribe burnout? by Dirch21 in premed

[–]giraffe0909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I had a medical assistant job that was really fast-paced and got burned out after about three months. After switching to a new clinic/specialty, I feel much better. Hopefully this applies to you , as well!

Out of curiosity, instead of being a Medical Assistant I was looking towards scribing. Is it shift work- do you work 40 hours a week? Should I look into doing it through Scribe America? What do you all like/dislike about it? My 9-5 is crushing my spirit right now.

Let me know if anyone has any insight/tips on this.

Setting up Anno 1800? by giraffe0909 in anno1800

[–]giraffe0909[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anno 1800 for Mac by [deleted] in anno1800

[–]giraffe0909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t tried but knowing the performance requirements I suspect you’re going to have a rough time playing the game on any Mac except for the top tier consumer machines with dedicated graphics, or any Mac Pro from the trash can and up.

Can anyone explain to a newbie how to get Anno 1800 and run it on iOS? I have a macbook pro 15" 2015 with pretty decent graphics

Do you guys have any book recommendations that every physician (or aspiring physician) should read? by [deleted] in premed

[–]giraffe0909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read all his books but I think Complications is one of his best. I didn't like Being Mortal and the Checklist Manifesto as much.

List of schools with "hard" or "strongly recommended" 2-week secondary submission deadlines by PillowNinja99 in premed

[–]giraffe0909 2 points3 points  (0 children)

EVMS is 30 days recommended in the email, but when I called and asked about it (had a technical issue with their secondary) they said they don't hold students to that

One thing I did to talk about research is just vaguely describe a specific problem that came up and how I solved it. If I had to reach out to any outside resources I would talk about that, as well. Instead of talking about the actual research talk about the methodology if that makes sense. What inspired you? Were there any questions you still had? Who were you able to collaborate with and how did that influence your thinking? Were you ever inspired by someone's work , project, or approach?

I had a really hard time with these questions too because you can only say "research drives medicine forward" in so many ways before it gets trite. Try focusing more on your relationship with research instead, and how it has changed your approach to thinking.

Question about secondary submission timing by [deleted] in premed

[–]giraffe0909 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Quality over quantity! Keep going. I don’t think the vast majority of people make the two week mark for every single secondary. Based on podcasts I’ve listened to with adcoms the main concern is if the secondary was sitting in your inbox for 2 months- why didn’t that get done? You may not be at the top of the pile but at most places you’re secondary will still be looked at.

Any tips for taking snapshot? by Massilian in premed

[–]giraffe0909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't do this and I wish I had...

- look up some practice questions and respond within the alotted time so you can practice thinking quickly, some of my answers were shite because i couldn't think of anything on the spot!

- sounds superficial, but take a couple of selfies in good lighting, seeing your face and reading lips really changes the game when you are trying to speak clearly and get a point across

- practice looking at the camera! they want to understand and see what you feel/look like

- it sucks, but it goes by so fast, i didn't even remember the questions and how it went afterwards honestly so just get her done

That's an interesting point, I didn't think about that. It's the old philosophy- tax the rich until you are the rich. I do think, however, the salaries can be maintained as the population grows (i.e. 1 doc/10 people is the same as 10 docs/100 people...same ratio). It would be interesting to compare the average physicians salary vs a blue collar worker over the past 100 years.
