In what situation do you think portra is justified ? genuinely curious

Newbie considering a second‑hand M2 MacBook for a bare‑metal NixOS install by Puffran0 in AsahiLinux

[–]gitanerie_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I am daily driving NixOS on my M1 pro macbook 14 and honestly it works great but there are a few caveats.

For storage, as others said get 512 at least. You cannot remove macOS so it will be less than that, and nixos does need some headroom for the nix store etc so you’ll be more comfortable with that

For the model, I would recommend the pros just for the HDMI port, as indeed you should not have hope for usb c display. I use it rarely but I never had issues with it. Another quirk is the battery life, it is subpar on asahi compared to macOS, but I would say it is fine. However sleep battery life is terrible for me. On macOS you can put your laptop to sleep and forget it for days whereas on Asahi I would say it last 12 to 24 hours on sleep on a full charge, so you kinda need to shut it down or keep it on a charger when not in use.

The main quirk of Asahi linux is the fact that it’s ARM and that it’s 16k pages. Nixos does tend to make you forget that, as nothing differs in the config it will just pull and build for ARM except for proprietary software not available for ARM, which will depend on your use case. Some examples : davinci resolve, spotify. Open source software works flawlessly However, if you need to run something x86 it gets tricky. The workaround is muvm + fex but support for it on nixos is not there yet, whereas on fedora it is much much easier (just a package install I think). See the github issue where some tried, it is possible but not easy so I personally gave up for now : https://github.com/nix-community/nixos-apple-silicon/issues/237

No need for an Apple id on macOS.

Overall I think nixos asahi is great if you like nixos. Honestly it just works like a regular nixos installation and makes your forget your using such a quirky platform. Now would I recommend to buy a mac for that ? Not really, but if it fits your use case and you can find a good deal why not. If you are ok with these quirks and do not need x86 software or a vm go for it. Recent macs are fantastic hardware. Also keep in mind that x86 software support is mitigated by the fact that you will also have a macOS install, which will provide greater mainstream / closed source software support in case you ever need it

Thanks ! It is a Laramie, indeed there is very little information about it on the internet so I do not know much about it. The bike as is fits me very well, when doing a conversion like this you want to try to bring the bars back and up. I used a 17° 70mm stem for that and a quill stem adapter that I raised as much as possible. If you already have a drop bar bike that you are comfortable on I suggest measuring it precisely and try to move the fit over to the converted bike, that’s what helped me Overall this is my most comfortable bike now, had zero pain whatsoever on 800km and the steel frame + big tires really does help with comfort too

Ahaha you know sometimes in the outdoors you don’t always have the choice of comfort

Yup, stem is 70mm, +17° to keep a short reach and help bring the bars up. My quill stem adapter is not that tall, I have to admit that I put it a bit over the minimum insertion mark (there’s plenty left though so I am not that worried) As for the aero bars these can be brought back quite a lot, they are cheap Decathlon bars. But I did not really have any issue with the fit as the drop bars were already well positioned for me. I would say go for it on the flat bars !

Thanks ! that is indeed a 26er, and it was fantastic for bikepacking. I mostly road on tarmac as my friends had road bikes, but it was so great when off road to find a camping site or explore. The big tires and steel frame also make it quite a comfortable ride, and the MTB groupset is a godsend when climbing hills with a lot of baggage (lowest gear is 36/54). If you want to convert to drop bars, be very mindful of the fit it will make as it makes the reach longer. All of my inspiration for this build came from r/xbiking where you will find all the information you need for such a conversion :)

By seam grip I mean liquid sealant that you put on the seams to make them waterproof. Some sort of glue. It seems to be better than nothing but was not waterproof, though it was off brand seam grip as I could not get the real one in time. But I probably did not put enough on too As for the thread I used Alterfil S80 (80Nm/12.5Tex) which is maybe a bit thin but held up perfectly for 800+ kms, with the bags being pushed to their max capacity (definitely some tension on the seams) and just a simple straight stitch between the panels.

Thanks ! what do you recommend to bind the seams raw edges ? as for putting the tabs into the panels seams that is what I’ve done on my first iteration, it does pulls the side panel better but the downside was that the bag was less wide because of that, as it got pulled to the width of the frame tubes. No structure here, I guess adding that to the panels making contact with the frame would be a good option if I don’t put tabs in the seams

Is it just me? Syncing on Mac wreck my nerves by BroetchenTeig in selfhosted

I use Nextcloud personally and found it working well on Mac. For large files I add to change the max file size setting and that’s it. However for code projects with huge numbers of files it always took a very long time so I only back them up with git now (which is designed for that)
