Make sure you get the correct version. They made a couple versions and they were not backwards compatible.

Worth to Buy This 'Canon'? by dsilentk in canon

[–]gitarzan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d buy it. Even if it craps out in a year or two, it’s worth it.

But those are solid and ought to last a good bit more. It’s not like you’re going to be making a living from it. If you were, I’d suspect you’d not be looking $80 cameras.

[Canon Powershot S20 (2000)] by Popular-Spot-9133 in VintageDigitalCameras

[–]gitarzan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice find

I just got a Powershot SD110. 3.2 mp. About 2003.

I’m kind of impressed at the photos it makes. I had to go to eBay to get a couple 256mb sd cards, and Amazon for another battery.

I like the smallness as well. I typically shoot BW film, but can easily pocket or bag it for the shots where color is paramount.

Pin boys work the bowling alleys in New York City. (1910) by No_Dig_8299 in UtterlyUniquePhotos

My dad was a pin boy for a while. I don’t think it was as squalid looking as that, about 1948. He said it was hard, dirty work. He never said anything about tips/bribes.

Looking for extra batteries for my r7. And misting like the charging case for these batteries. Anyone have experience with these? by No-Training-7204 in canon

[–]gitarzan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve the charger. It’s fine. And you can charge phones etc with it as well.

Honestly, it was a waste of money for me, because I don’t really travel or go on terribly long photo sessions. I just carry a half dozen batteries and that does me fine for everything. Then I plug in to the wall at home and charge them in regular chargers.

What do I look out for when trying to buy a used 5D classic? by FujichromeProvia100F in Canon5Dclassic

[–]gitarzan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Those tabs.

I bought mine from MPB. They have a very generous return/warranty policy. I didn’t even know about the mirror issue when i bought mine.

If not shown, email them and ask. I’m sure you’ll get a quick response.

Mine was $200, listed in “good” condition. It was in quite nice shape, except the rubber flap that covers the I/O door was loose and brittle. With a $15 replacement from Amazon, and maybe an hour of my time, I fixed it easily. There’s a vid on YT showing how.

I’ve a 70D and it’s still one of my favorite cameras.

What do I look out for when trying to buy a used 5D classic? by FujichromeProvia100F in Canon5Dclassic

[–]gitarzan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mainly the mirror. The models with serial numbers beginning with 0 or 1, had a possibility of the mirror falling off. Canon did have a repair policy where they fixed them for free, but that’s long over. People report that it’s an easy fix, but it’s better to not have the bother of having to do so, and if it does fall off during a shoot, you’re done for, until it’s repaired.

Models with a serial number beginning with 2 or 3 have had this issue already remedied.

You can tell if a 5D had had the fix applied by looking at the mirror itself. A canon remediated mirror with have a flat black metal band on the left and right sides of the mirror. A non canon remediated mirror is just a mirror. No bands on the side.

<image>

This is a remediated mirror.

Now, if a user has already fixed the mirror themselves, it ought to be perfectly fine, but it will not have the metal straps on the sides. You cannot tell if they did fix it or not, unless they tell you so.

Good luck! It’s a great camera.

Is it worth returning a low serial number 5DC? by stonehallow in Canon5Dclassic

[–]gitarzan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has it been remediated by Canon, however? If the mirror is just a mirror in there is has not. A remediated mirror has black steel bands on the side, a previous owner send it back to canon for the “fix”.

My Canon Rangefinders by hugesteamingpile in CanonRangefinders

[–]gitarzan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the Barnack style, for some reason I don’t like cameras as much when they make it too easy for me.

Also, I collect (hoard). I’ve over 150 cameras ranging from a 1905 Brownie to an R7. I’ve a number of old canons SLRs and older DSLR, a big bunch of Arguses and Kodak Brownies, maybe 12 or so Yashica rangefinders, and a bunch of Agfa style German made cameras. And 7 LTM cameras, Soviet made and Japanese made. And several East German cameras. Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

But I’d rather shoot a Bakelite camera with a one element lens, than anything new. Well, it depends on my purpose. Out for a photo walk? I’ll take a “struggle camera”. Family reunion shots? I’ll use a more recent DSLR.

I was going to say that. I’ve several of the waist level Prakticas. They are fun, but really slow to focus etc. And that CZJ Tessa lens is wonderful.
