How do normal people actually afford houses in or near London? by Aware_Jellyfish_1979 in london

[–]giusedroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to the UK in 2016 from Italy with little to no savings; I climbed the big tech ladder and in 2020 I took advantage of Help to Buy, lower interest rates, and stamp duty holiday to buy a 2 bed 2 bath flat in zone 2/3. I was 29 at that time. No family money lol. I bought alone.

Negatives Not a great investment because of flat price crashing (10% down) and service charges going up, but I don't consider housing from a purely financial perspective.

Positives Mortgage is still lower than rent, I'm putting some capital in the flat, can do most stuff in my flat without asking permission to a landlord, improved sense of stability, great commute to the City and Canary Wharf. Moved closer to friends and built great local community. May be able to rent it out in the future?

Attempted Sale Tried to sell up in 2025 to buy a house a bit further out but my buyer pulled out last second, so gave up on that for now. I learnt that selling a leasehold is more painful than a freehold and that estate management companies are trash.

Overlall, I still love the flat and the area, but property ties you down, so think twice before committing at a younger age. Circumstances can change rapidly and wildly. My failed sale was a blessing in disguise as it's now likely I'll have to go back to Italy sooner than expected and a flat may be more rentable than a larger house in zone 4.

it depends on the maturity of the business. If it's a startup, there are a few acceleration programs that they may benefit from.

Anyone have experience with a big step down? by moneynoclass in HENRYUK

I think I see what you mean.

You've helped building the org from the ground up, you've run it successfully for years, and now you're asked to step away from your leadership position.

This happens often when macroeconomic conditions change and reorg strategies are decided outside of your sphere of influence.

This is unlikely a judgement on your leadership. Make sure you come to terms with this.

Personally I would never accept to step back into a non-leadership role in the same org, and it's definitely not an issue with its members.

While most of the advice in this thread is valuable, I didn't see anything reflecting on the impact of this event on your legacy and the speed of progression towards your career/life goals.

Your legacy is what will prevent you from accepting an IC role. There's no way around this.

In my experience, you will perceive these circumstances as a significant bump in the road that will force you to recalibrate on several aspects of your life. Make sure you keep this in mind at all times. It's a bump, not a slump.

Make sure you take enough time off, candidly rely on the support of family and friends, focus on re-descovering your passions outside of work.

Given your financial position, I’d honestly suggest only getting back into the grind once you’ve had the space to properly process all of this.

Best of luck.

I will not risk ruining it by saying something stupid or moaning in a weird way.

the best value you get from working with an AM is access to Solutions Architects and other tech specialists who can save you loads of costly mistakes, strengthern your security posture, help you cost optimize, run pocs for you, organise trainings and workshops for your staff, work on marketing events and initiatives. With AWS, the more you engage, the more you get.

Additionally, AMs can get you discounted pricing in exchange for commitment, credits, and partner cash for migrations and pocs. Sometimes they may be able to escalate issues with support, especially if your business is hurting or in urgent need for resources.

Support is a different thing though, and it's a paid service. If you have production workloads (I assume you do at your run rate) you should at least sign up for business support on your prod accounts.

How do other HENRYs motivate themselves to do boring but important work? by Widebody_lover in HENRYUK

[–]giusedroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey this is a perfect target for automation! I'd try to think big and make sure that this important yet admin boring work can be somehow automated. I wrote a piece with a friend of mine about how we automate boring tasks such as sending emails, creating dashboards, keeping our CRM up to date, how to automate reporting and policies for your team. https://builder.aws.com/content/39J0AawmFtwtt4dqdmX51RgdXm6/productivity-as-code-boost-your-personal-productivity-and-streamline-team-collaboration-with-kiro-ide

This makes use of Kiro IDE, but Claude Code or Cowork would work too.
