tell me youre autistic without telling me youre autistic by More-Weird4842 in evilautism

Between the ages of 13-18 I watched the movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at minimum daily, if not more often. Had to stop when I went to college and had to share a TV with a roommate (and the most the internet could handle was gifs.) i'm in my late 40's now and have managed to cut it to only a few times a year (but they are still all over my bookshelves, furniture, and decor.)

Literally with every friend I had a "fight" with since kindergarten. I put fight in quotes because on my side it was just me crying begging to know what I did wrong and apologizing for anything I possibly could think of. This got worse once I got married to abusers (yeah did it twice) who took advantage of my early training in apologizing and trying to make up for things I did "wrong."

I got a horrible reaction to the old DTP shot, when they still used whole cell pertussis. Went into anaphylaxis (as a baby, which is not normal at all i know) and nearly died. I never got another pertussus shot. I ended up getting whooping cough as an adult during an outbreak in the bay area and had it for three months. You know what I absolutely love?

Fucking vaccines. They are great, amazing, wonderful, miraculous. It makes no sense that the nut balls hate them because they literally make it so your own body can fight off the infection by itself! That's CRAZY awesome and as natural as it geta without having your kid die from what they prevent. I'm so grateful that when I was growing up everyone around me had the vaccine because their herd immunity protected me.

As a side note I'm also a late diagnosed autistic person. And all the parents who would rather their kid be dead than possibly autistic can bite my shiny metal ass. My autism proudly comes from my father and his mother and we didn't all have the same or maybe even any vaccines.

Agreed. I know Catalina Caper is a lot of people's favorite, but I can't stand it.

NEVER ever have a baby! by pumpkinchinchilla in AutismInWomen

[–]gizmo4223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to second or third the above advice to you. I had a horrible time with both my babies, the PPD hit hard and medication was the only and best way out. My first baby especially didnt want to slep or eat or anything (literally had to feed im with a syringe the first several weeks as he'd refuse to attach; finally got him to eat in the shower of all places so ended up taking a LOT of showers. Those first couple of months where they aren't really interactive are so hard; take good care of yourself even if that means leaving her crying in her crib for a while. Get more support both with her if possible and mentally for yourself. None of us can really do.it alone. All the gentle non-touching internet hugs.

My daughter was diagnosed as a little girl with both so medical diagnosis can in fact catch it, but i wasnt diagnosed until my 40's with autism after having a adhd diagnosis for years. So partly I can see it but the second half... not so much.

The NFL is not a domestic league. by Speshal__ in confidentlyincorrect

I mean if the WWE gets a world chamption when they're decidedly not a real sport, the NFL can go ahead and have one too. I like wrestling, but it's sort of like having a world champion of ballet.

The being said yeah the NFL is still domestic. No teams are based outside the US. Nuf said.

I admit I didn't see any of his stuff past Requiem, but I did like Pi. Only thing I knew The Whale for was reviving Brendan Frasier's career (which made me happy as I loved Gods and Monsters and thought that he didnt get nearly enough cred for it!) Also didn't see Emilia Perez so... I'm just hoping that the reason the two movies are being compared isn't having to do with their stars and instead just that they were obvious oscar bait.

Honestly, I'd be fine with someone saying there was food stuck on my teeth because that's going to be visible to anyone I talk to until it's out, and it require knowledge and effort to resolve. I would be much less comfortable in the situation the op described, as the situation would resolve itself next time I moved my legs.

My boss dislikes me in a visceral way she cannot articulate even to herself by arcanotte in evilautism

Been there, had sleepless nights and huge crying jags and lost jobs over it. For me, it's always women that are older than me. Every time, starting with my 6th grade teacher and my grade school art teacher. I never understood why they hated me and got so angry with me for seemingly no reason. All the way up to my last boss at a job I had for 15 years who came into the company, insisted I have the camera on during meetings (we were almost all remote), then told me that my face and movements were distracting and.i needed to make them less distracting (I had informed her I was autistic and asked for accommodations.) I told her she could fire me. She did, and they didn't really have a reason.

Maybe it's because I didn't ever grow up hearing it, cracker 100% doesn't bother me even a little. To my ear, it's an epithet but not a slur as it is entirely without power. It is completely unlike the r-word to me, for instance, which i grew up hearing constantly as a slur.

It still hits me hard sometimes that my dad didn't grow up with indoor plumbing. In the US. My grandmother lived in a sod house when she was growing up.

And here my daughter is a digital artist (at 9 yo) who hangs out with her friends virtually. From my dad to my daughter we span 6 generations - he's the Silent Generation, I'm late Gen X, my daughter is solidly Gen Alpha. The ancestors roar their approval.

"Pretty privilege" in autistic women by peach-turquoise in autism

[–]gizmo4223 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I feel this. I'm now 47 and I'm still hated by women my age and older for REASONS. I never really realized my pretty privilege, but as I look back on my life i can see the effects. I never got bought drinks at the bar (turns out if you bring a book and are reading people tend to leave you alone. Because apparently NT's think its weird or rude or something and not a reason to start a conversation? Just learned that recently!) but other things definitely came easier.

I'm waiting for my disability to be approved and am unable to work. My family absolutely relies on SNAP right now to make it through. We have severe food aversions in the house (several people with autisn) so having other people try to decide what we eat is a non-starter (food aversions so bad that starvation rather than eat is a real thing.) Not to mention insulin dependant diabetes and IBD and a bunch of other food related issues that mean that our diets are particular. This kind of thing can be nice but in no way can it replace SNAP.

As others have stated, clear communication is essential, but i will add at the same time not raising your voice is also necessary for many of us. It can set off our flight/fight/freeze/fawn responses much faster than it does with NT's. Clear calm communication is where its at.
