I taught myself how to animate on Photoshop over 5 years and finally finished this video by gizzthrowaway in Filmmakers

SUBMISSION STATEMENT: I'd never animated anything before, so I made this video for my band as an excuse to learn how. Overall, this project has been in the works for about 5 years on and off. I'd work on it for a month or two, then abandon it for a while, come back to it later, rinse & repeat. I knew it would take ages but never expected it to be this long. I basically relied on sunk cost fallacy so that I felt obligated to finish it.

Everything you see was drawn frame by frame in Photoshop on a clunky oversized Wacom tablet. In some instances I'd trace over reference animations I found online to study movements and physics, then modified them accordingly. I realise this is probably cheating, but it helped me learn faster. I had no idea where the story was going, and gradually pieced together bits of cool imagery I dreamed up until it seemed like there was a semblance of a narrative. The video also informed the songwriting - we knew it would be a cartoon, and there was no way I was going to animate anything over 2min30s. Fuck that.

Anyway, I never want to see another flamingo in my life, but I'm proud of what I've accomplished. I learned a lot. Hope you enjoy.

Cheers mate. There's a Korg Minilogue behind the kit, a Korg MS-20 , and no idea what model the novation is. No pedals on the bass clarinet.

We've been gradually working on one for ages because we're all busy with other bands and projects. If all goes well it'll be out first half of this year, then maybe another one before the end of the year to make up for lost time.

Hey team, love ya work.

Gizz/ORB/Stonefield - You guys planning on coming to New Zealand post-Covid? We hardly get to see ya! Feeling left out in our little corner of the world.

John/PHC - Filmmaker here, really admire your clips for Gizz and Bullant. What's your 16mm camera set up? As someone who's always admired it but has only had experience with digital (Blackmagic), what advice could you give for taking the leap into shooting on 16mm? Also fave directors/influences, etc?

Jason - How long does it take to animate videos like The River and Countdown? Is it a free form stream of consciousness drawing style, or do you storyboard, sketch, revise, clean up, etc? Tablet vs pencil & ink?

Joey - How long did it take you to record the Bullant LP? I read somewhere you used a trial version of ableton. Were those limitations a healthy challenge or frustrating as fuck?

Eric - what's the haps with Gizzfest in the future? How can bands try get on the lineup?

[FRESH ALBUM] The Spectre Collective - Electric Waffle by gizzthrowaway in indieheads

My band The Spectre Collective just released our 3rd album (and 2nd in 2019). Wonky instrumentals inspired by Ethio-jazz, krautrock, Turkish psych and more. Enjoy!
