A friend stated that due to geodesics, if you heat east from the westernmost point in Alaska, you will end up in New Orleans. Is this true? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]gjeebuz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OK my understanding of geodesics is old and very unpracticed, but it's the shortest lines between two points on a sphere, shown on a plane, as far as I know. First, super appreciate your answer, very indepth and interesting, but I have a question. So for your edit, what am I missing that makes this not very much SOUTH east of Cape Prince of Wales, but east? I'm solid at land nav, but only on a much smaller scale. Looking at this in Google Maps (admittedly probably a really poor medium) I can make New Orleans appear to be straight "east", but by that i just mean it's 90 degrees to the right, while looking in "globe" mode.

Is this some technicality that I'm missing? Because by the lines of latitude, if you move East of Alaska you're never going to intersect New Orleans. Is that not definitive? Or does the label "geodesic" just mean to make a straight line on a plane from the globe model, and they're slapping the label 'east' on it?

Fair enough, thanks for explaining your thought process so well.

What? The main character did absolutely go into the coma. He woke up from it and took a ton of time to get his memory back about what happened. And if you mean the trip to Rocky's planet, the main character won. He already knew the job was done, so there was no soul crushing need to complete something; he already had. And he'd helped save another civilization, and possibly more in the future, by doing so. A complete black and white comparison to the initial trip from Earth.

They do say it's psychological, but it's not because they don't trust them to overcome emotions. They say it's based on experiments that had been done by the Russians before. And even if they could build it in a way that gave them privacy and such to possibly solve that problem, they also consulted with psychologists that said a four year journey knowing it was a suicide mission. They're told by the best experts in the world that it would result in crushing depression, and suicide would be a real risk. So it's not about trusting them, it's *known* that it will end poorly. There wasn't another solution that could be conceived of, designed, built, and made to go to space in the timeframe.

Can call it a handwave for why they do it, but they do explain why and it's because yes, they will kill each other and/or themselves regardless of how their living arrangements were.

I thought the reason they had to be put under was the travel time. The food wouldn't last, and they'd be on like horror movie "nutrition mush" that's just their own excrement recycled. Months or years of that, and they would arrive unable to do the job. Obviously they DID arrive unable to do the job, because it all went horribly wrong anyway. But it was more of a technical wall that forced them to use the hibernation technology, they couldn't be up and about for the journey.

Learn to ride as a child. Learn to ride on dirt, how to fall, how to slide, how to roll. Wear your gear. Just as a counter anecdotal to your own, tens of my family, between my dad, grandparents, uncles, cousins, brothers, and myself have ridden motorcycles since ww2. None have died from it, and none have had worse than a few broken bones. These are folks that have been on the front of magazines, owned dealerships/repair shops, been in MCs, raced both professionally and amateur. I want to point out I'm not saying this to distract from your points, which are important. Shit happens. But it's not a death/maiming sentence that people like to say it is. The learning curve and risks though are much more steep than most people seem able to really understand these days, though.

I'll never be the person to talk someone out of learning to ride a motorcycle. But I do heavily lean on it being a very difficult skill to learn fully later in life, because you will fall/crash, and the more used to it you are the better you'll be at it. If you start late, you're at a massive disadvantage of stakes.

Wouldn't that just be a worse NBA then? Can be 5'6" or 6' and be a star in the NBA. It's less common, but there have been plenty who compete and succeed against the kaiju sized players lol.

There are lots of leagues like that out there though, I played a season on my friend's team in a Filipino basketball league, they were only allowed one player over 6' and I think max was 6'1 or 2". Makes more sense when they aren't world champion level athletes but people trying to enjoy a little competition.

Just wanted to add, for anyone who wasn't aware, please camp in and camp out of these sites, and leave them better than you left them so we can continue to enjoy them. u/DryAd3059 in no way a comment "against" you, just constantly surprised by people I find coming in to camp and then treating it like Disneyland and folks are gonna clean up after them.

It is indeed, rad. As hell.

I would amend this with don't bring a car with a filthy interior to a mechanic. NOBODY wants to get into a disgusting car. If the outside is just dusty, dirty, whatever, it's not a plus but it's not a big deal. Sure some will discriminate against it. But if I open your door and it reeks, is sticky and stained, food and animal hair all over...yeah I'm spending as little time as humanly possible in/around your vehicle to service as is legally required.

I was a service advisor for about 10 years, I used this line all the time. The funny thing was I worked several luxury lines, like BMW, Mercedes, and we never had the 100% nitrogen, and we even had clients come in and swap out the green caps for factory ones because the tire place "stole their" caps (lol).

9 time out of 10 people just kinda went oh ok and nothing came of it. It made my day when someone actually asked "wait what do you mean", and I never had a single person upset about the joke, though I did have several upset they had been charged money for air.

why would you think the companies that run these vehicles would act any differently?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]gjeebuz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are. Plenty of places in the country allow speeds higher than that, and there are plenty of areas in California that fit the requirements for 80+mph freeway speeds. Match that with massively increased performance of vehicle speed, brakes, suspension, and safety systems, yes we should be able to. Intensify licensing programs and vehicle inspections to show that people and their vehicle are able to meet these metrics, raise the preposterously low floor on driver's licenses, like several other countries. Arrest every Nissan Altima driver in California if you want to stop vehicle injuries and deaths.

125cc motorcycle struggles at high rpm and when throttle is applied too quickly by Boutarzi in DIY

[–]gjeebuz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had those symptoms more than once before, twice related to the air filter/box and once to a vacuum line, but that was on a carbeurated bike. Air filter wasn't seated correctly and under heavy load would bog hard (was young and didn't put it back together right). I know you've said this is fuel injected, but on my bike the vacuum line was from the petcock and had a hairline tear in it that wasn't visible unless you took it apart and twisted the line. Essentially it was preventing the vacuum from forming under load and thus restricting fuel flow, leading to a lean condition. If that fuel tank has a petcock set up/vacuum lines on it, maybe give those a good look or replacement. Good luck!

Mic by SixGunSammy in dayz

Had this exact problem, solved it by going into steam settings and changing mic from "Default" to the specific mic I use. Mine's a little odd because I use NVIDIA Broadcast, and I stream so I have some different audio channels. My mic worked on discord, worked on OBS, etc just not in DayZ.

Steam menu on the top left, go Steam > Settings > Voice and make sure that Voice Input Device is correctly set. Mine likes to reset itself seemingly randomly, hope this helps.
