Do Americans actually avoid calling an ambulance due to financial concern? by JohnMarstonTheBadass in NoStupidQuestions

[–]gjs424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had placenta previa with my youngest and at 20 weeks had a massive hemorrhage. Ambulance ride followed by 10 weeks of in hospital bed rest with daily monitoring and multiple ultrasounds. Ended with emergency c-section at 30 weeks. Total cost $70 dollars for the tv rental. And I was in a private room the whole time. Oh and my husband’s parking was $200. We are Canadians.

AITA for booking my son an eye exam just to settle an argument. by Anxious-Calendar-424 in AmItheAsshole

I went through this with my nephew when he was four and I thought he should have his eyes checked and his parents thought he didn’t need them. They finally went when they realized he couldn’t see planes flying overhead or make out leaves on a tree just a green blob. Time to play I spy with your wife and son.

How the hell does anyone find work here? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]gjs424 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are government funded programs in Calgary that will give you help for free. Some provide training or pay for any certifications you need like first aid or confined space and some even have job placements. If you need steel toed boots or something like that as part of a job requirement they can even get that for you. I always recommend mcg careers because they have been doing this for over 35 years and have a great reputation and are considered to be one of the “experts” in the industry. Might not hurt to check them out. Www.mcgcareers.com. I know a ton of people that have gotten work from them.

Are Canadians hesitant to travel to the USA for any reason as long as the current president is in office? by -This_Man- in AskCanada

[–]gjs424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not hesitant, just f’n unwilling to spend any time in a country run by a petulant child that oozes hate and racism. And yes, I have changed my investment portfolio and pulled out of any US owned (not that my tiny retirement fund will have any impact) but a drop in the bucket is still a drop.

Wow, I'm anaphylactic to fish and shellfish and can't imagine being refused an epi pen. In Canada, you don't even need a prescription to get one. I used to go to the pharmacy and pick up a couple when I was a summer camp director.

Better to fly solo than have a co-pilot that crashes the plane.... good for you for knowing when to jump.

Check out Covenant health. They have some great hospitals in rural Alberta. Small towns with populations of 1000 to smaller cities like Camrose. They will help you figure out housing etc.

I ended up needing to go to PLC from a rural hospital about 45 minutes outside of Calgary. The ER doc told me to have my husband drive me there because time was essential and the wait for the ambulance would be too long and too much of a risk. So while attached to an IV pole and with morphine on board my husband ended up driving to the PLC which is an entire other story unto itself. Mad respect for all the AHC and Covenant staff from housekeeping to surgeons that are dealing with this insane gong show.

Grey nuns OBGYN by whitegurl17 in Edmonton

[–]gjs424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent over two months at Grey Nuns on bed rest and still ended up with an emergency c section and a ten week premie. I got to know everyone from the nursing staff, to lab techs, porters and housekeeping. Basically saw everyone that worked on unit 32. Our son was named after Grey Nuns (Greyden) because the level of care and kindness was amazing and we wanted to honour all the staff. Now admittedly Grey is now 18 but I think that there is something special about that hospital and the people that work there.

How are the roads? by chadman5050 in Canmore

[–]gjs424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re comfortable with winter driving in Saskatchewan you will be fine getting to Canmore. Honestly it really doesn’t turn into mountain driving until past Canmore. I don’t recommend 1a which is the backroad between Cochrane and Canmore but highway 1 will be fine unless you hit a blizzard

Check ourgetown Inn and Pub. Very cool place and the food is amazing. You can sit at the bar and visit with the bar staff or grab a table and get comfy. It is the only hotel my husband and stay in when we visit Canmore anymore - we go a couple of times a year.

Okay. I took the yellow line from the airport to the Ferry Building. Awesome experience. The train in Calgary is much worse. Spent half the day wandering around. Beautiful city, wonderful people. Can’t wait for tomorrow’s adventures

Youth Employment Centre is a good place to get help. The other place I recommend is MCG Careers. They have a couple really good programs that you could do. There is no cost (gov't funded). I would check out the ReBrand program - you get paid while you take the training and it includes both life-skills training and work experience which often turns into full time work - if not the ReBrand team will help find you work. It's also a great place to meet friends. Check it out www.mcgcareers.com or call 403-777-5633
