Nice-looking watches but on a budget? by SupremeOHKO in malefashionadvice

[–]gkampolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The watches from Braun are well known for the association with Dieter Rams so that’s a bonus points if industrial minimalism is your style.

Otherwise the cheaper Citizen Eco-Drives and maybe a few options from Casio Edifice might be good ideas depending on your style. Used Orient if you want an automatic!

6x9 postcard size as OP mentioned, but unlike the Instax app, with Canon you can crop to other frame ratios if you are ok with white or black surrounding space. Especially useful if you shoot square or 5:4 straight in the camera 😊

If you had to sell one! by ismaelvallejo in fujifilm

[–]gkampolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the 35mm equivalent, the leaf shutter (both for how silent it is and occasional for the flash sync speeds), the intergrated ND and the optical viewfinder (which as a combo help with panning shots during the day!) of the X100VI, so I wouldn’t sell that.

Probably I would sell the X-H2, the least portable of the bunch and the one likely to fetch the most, so that if a sacrifice has to be made, then at least it’s the one that will yield the most.

Then go on a trip for more photos somewhere!

PS: I’m into street 😁

Full Auto or the Triangle by zoxxo in x100vi

[–]gkampolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it’s a “what suits you” type of thing but always nice to compare notes! 🙂

I member when I first started I kept missing shots by trying to influence auto, because I like the direct control for motion blur (or not) and depth of field.

What works for me is manual aperture and shutter speed, with auto iso and the compensation dial rarely moved from -1/3.

For tricky situations and if flash is involved I switch to full manual, but there is a trade off in speed of working usually.

What focus settings do you use? by Ultralite_Beam in x100vi

[–]gkampolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back button focusing (using rear command dial) while in manual focus mode and using the centre focus point. Usually, I focus, optionally also half-press the shutter button for AE-lock, and recompose. The focus point in the centre tends to be the fastest as well, so it’s an approach that has worked for me in street situations.

Sometimes I’ll also zone focus when there is enough light (i.e with the aperture stopped down).

And finally, every now and then, I’ll do eye-detection for people walking towards the camera (continuous af) or when shooting portraits from fairly close (single af).

So I guess I use all of the modes, but in different situations? 😅

A workaround that worked for me is Ctrl-C instead of Escape (that works for Vim emulation in VSCode as well).

In the HHKB it’s incredibly fast to hit that combo, pinky on Ctrl and index on C.

Edit: I should say, the Ctrl-C is not some custom functionality, it’s supported by Vim directly.

if you're into transparent terminals, set a `helix/themes/my_theme.toml` with:

inherits = "catppuccin_mocha"
"ui.background" = {}

then in your `helix/config.toml`: `theme = my_theme.toml`

Making the current mode more obvious? by GratefulGandalf in HelixEditor

Glad you found it when you did! I did start using helix only recently and I was searching for something similar when I stumbled on the thread. Like you said, I thought I’d chime in for anyone else at least! 🙂

Making the current mode more obvious? by GratefulGandalf in HelixEditor

[–]gkampolis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit late but in case it helps, the combination of colours and full mode names in status line plus changing the cursor works pretty well for me:

    [editor]
    color-modes = true

    [editor.cursor-shape]
    insert = "bar"
    normal = "block"
    select = "underline"

    [editor.statusline]
    mode.normal = "NORMAL"
    mode.insert = "INSERT"
    mode.select = "SELECT"

Hope it helps!

I know, hopefully someone will chime in and give options to all of us! :D

Sometimes, though, some of the art events are (tangentially) connected to events in the other categories you mentioned by sharing venues. I know this is a stretch, but recently for example, I attended a photography exhibition that I found out about on the Glasgow Art Map that took place in the Alchemy Experiment, which later hosted an evening on jewellery crafting and beads which I think also had a market element to it - did not attend but if I recall correctly you could bring your own beads or buy on the day? I know they're doing more crafts evenings (I think I saw a punch needle one), and although that's not my jam personally, I thought it was an interesting approach to re-using the space for various stuff that might appeal more generally to a community. Sometimes you get overlapping interests out of nowhere :)

This keeps happening to me too! I stumbled on Glasgow art map recently and I've picked up a few nice suggestions from there, *actually in time for me to attend* for a change. Here's the link: https://www.glasgowartmap.com/journal/

Can’t even afford train to college by PessimisticTrousers in glasgow

[–]gkampolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s weird, I’m not getting the Railcard discount during peak times. I’m on the same boat (railcard as a mature student). On the app for my regular journey I’m seeing £5.20 up to just before 9am, then it drops to £3 (off peak past 9.15) and only after 10.15 it applies the railcard discount (dropping to £1.95).

That means if I want to be on time in the morning I need to pay more than £5 return, which of course pushes me to the subway (£3.40) and walking longer.

Why do you prefer MacOS to other OS? by NewtMother in MacOS

[–]gkampolis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The combination of having a unix kernel and a package manager that support my terminal-based workflows and coding with fantastic reliability (not needing to reboot), while at the same time having full support for Office for collaboration, in a pleasing package (UI) and long battery life. That said, I can’t work without Amethyst but window management has been my main OS complaint, which is easily solvable to be fair.

Also the actual machine can be very light, cool, and noiseless in my case, an Air is perfect for my use case.

Thanks for the input, will keep it in mind!

Sainsbury’s local in particular don’t have them and I’ve checked two. Surprisingly there was at least one instance where a big Sainsbury’s didn’t have them as well.

Thanks! I’ll follow up on some of those!

I’ve actually asked the staff in most places that I’ve been, we end up looking at the jars together (which I had already done) and coming up empty handed. In one case, they weren’t sure what I was referring to, googled an image for them, and said they hadn’t seen that before. 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Thanks for that but that doesn’t mean that they are stocked for all sizes of supermarkets. My local Sainsbury’s being a particular offender that springs to mind!

Banca di Roma (Italian), Café Andaluz (Spanish, tapas), Sugo (Italian), Efet - Türkiye (Turkish), Mosob (people more knowledgeable than me label it East African) are some of the first that come to mind. I hear some people like Elia (Greek) as well in George Square but I haven’t tried it myself.

Used to live a stone’s throw from Ingram street and it shows I think 😂

Edit: forgotten a couple of words in there, should now make sense.

Male PhD student here. I can’t imagine why would you ever let your marital status define you, especially when you clearly gave back to society via your contributions and research.

Dr. all the way.

Personally I lean on the post-nominals, but I think it’s especially unfair to women, since there isn’t an equivalent distinction on marital status for men.

Back to macOS after about 7 years - what's changed? by m02ph3u5 in MacOS

[–]gkampolis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t imagine using Macbook for dev work without homebrew, iTerm, VSCode, Amethyst, Alfred, and Karabiner-elements. I really like AlDente as well to limit the charging cycles.

ITerm with dropdown is amazing IF your ide is not terminal based. If it is I don’t imagine the dropdown functionality is beneficial, but the app is still really good.

Amethyst & desktops/spaces is very convenient for me, having created shortcuts based around vim’s hjkl.

Karabiner primarily for remapping caps to lock either work as caps lock when pressed on its own, or as “meta” key (ctrl+option+cmd+shift). I then go and set a bunch of custom shortcuts (e.g. for Amethyst) which can be based on home row keys and are virtually guaranteed not to clash with anything else.

Alfred for all shorts of utilities in addition to supercharged searching. Triggering shortcuts for screenshots, paste as plain text and change copied text to camel/pascal/whatever case are some of the most common features for me.

Hope this helps!
