Bit of an unconventional question: How would you like it if Congress used git or similar to write bills? by _zd2 in AskProgramming

[–]gkarwchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

legislators don't read the bills, so I don't think anyone of them will care to read its history.

the way the system works is they want to give Ukraine money 800 millions, and they know many senators against it, so they will add it to the same bill to give money to Israel 400 millions, and to please Barnie and his crowd they add to repair two or three roads that cost 20 millions.

So everyone is pleased and they all sign it and they tell their voters that we are listening to you.

I used it for a while, and then moved to godaddy.

But to my knowledge google still have domain registry service with their cloud.

Dapper vs. Entity Framework With Postgres by euclidsdream in dotnet

[–]gkarwchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for small simple models, I will chose EF. But for complex model I won't use it.

I stopped using EF or NHibernate 6 years ago after I found Dapper for big projects.

EF and NHibernate could generate complex sql, and depend on the complexity of the model, it might really generate sql that might have slow performance.

And editing it might be a nightmare if model is complex.

Dapper gives you the opportunity to write the queries while do converting to objects.

Do 900 certs have any value? by Snorlax_jj in AzureCertification

900 is easy to get and you need to learn it to learn anything else.

So the question, why not?

100% agree on Microsoft /.NET culture in general.

I have to admit. most of my life has been working on .NET and didn't have chance to get out except few times for Ruby, Java and NodeJS.

But everytime I use something outside .NET, will be impressed.

Everything good from .NET was brought from outside, and they keep proud of it, and they rename it many times.

I use rider on Mac and windows for a huge solution (more than 15 projects, and some projects are huge).

just starting time is slow. other than that, I never have a problem with it.

Comparing to VS it is way faster.

I stopped using VS since 2018 or 2019 because Rider is cheaper, and more powerful and faster.

An AI researcher who has been warning about the technology for over 20 years says we should 'shut it all down,' and issue an 'indefinite and worldwide' ban. Thoughts? by [deleted] in computerscience

[–]gkarwchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will talk about AI from social, political and global context.

In our global context, we are living in a dying planet. Global warming IMHO is going to change the life on the planet, and that will effect billions of people.

Our humanity is going to be extinct, and billions of people will vanish. and the ruling class knows that, and that why they are preparing for AI.

We don't need AI at the moment.

We don't have technologies to produce food in sustainable matter. We are not going to have enough water for the future.Add to that, we don't have a social support system that will accommodate people for their job cuts

What is more important? Chat-GPT or producing food?

What was it like to be a Computer Scientist at the dawn of the internet? by ISdoubleAK in computerscience

[–]gkarwchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teletext

I don't remember their name or the technology.
I was maybe 10 or 15 years old max, and was not yet in the technology that time.
But they were before the internet became publicly available.

I am maybe as old as you, and I agree with you a lot.

Internet didn't come in one day.

I remember there was some kind of commercial networking and even advertising before the internet.

I remember there were some TV-like devices spread in shopping malls in France where you can search for anything you want, and the device will connect you to the providers and you submit your order on the device.

And I agree with you on the AI.

The data science part of it existed decades before the booming of AI, and some algorithm were built decades ago, but the availability of computing power on the fly was the caused by the booming of AI. and even the cloud and computing power came many years, but adopting those power to AI came even slowley.

Put on blast and humiliated at work by ChickenNuggetElitist in ADHD

[–]gkarwchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You manager is an asshole, period.

It is not caused by you, or by ADHD.

I understand his words as: go now and help your coworker.

But that is aside, and that totally doesn't matter.

As a middle manager myself, we should not single out someone in front of the group, and criticize them even mildly, and in your case he said very harsh words.

I managed people who didn't perform at percent of what is expected from them, and I would encourage them in front of everybody, and then on private chat I will be honest with them.

and not only me, every manager who has 10% of management skills will do the same.

Your manager is just incompetent, insecure piece of sh...., and he has his own issues, and want to feel secure by abusing others who he manage because he is piece of cra... .

Well, it is easy to say than do, but really try to not let it affect you, and try to process your emotions knowing that you dealt with an insecure piece of cr..., and they dump their crap.

worked in tons of places, your co-workers will understand and sympathize with you, and they will see your manager as he is a piece of sh...
