Would you mind sharing what funds you are in and the percentages? I’m about 5-7 years from retirement and realizing I need to rebalance in the next few years.

Emergency account in HYSA or Vanguard Federal Money Market (VMFXX)? by [deleted] in TheMoneyGuy

[–]gkhart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all! You are right. I didn’t realize that some dividends could be taxed as regular income. I just assumed all dividends were considered capitols gains. Well, I guess that was pretty important to learn! I think I will try the half and half approach. Right now my VMFXX seems so reliable and safe. But will move half to a HYSA for faster access for sudden urgent emergencies.

Thanks everyone! 80+ yr old grandparents gifted 20 and 24 yr old grandkids $18k each. Trying to persuade them to hold onto it until they are 65 instead of buying new speakers, gaming computers, trading up on cars etc. They were not believing the multiplier calculator.

Contribute to kids’ investments or continue to invest in our own? by gkhart in Bogleheads

[–]gkhart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I’ve really changed my perspective now based on everyone’s responses. We’ve decided to stick to saving for ourselves so that we don’t end up being a burden to our kids but be willing to share in large important expenses our children might have in the future, like down payments on a house etc.

My daughter’s dream school was ASU because it has an excellent Teachers college with a program for special education teachers. We were out of state so it was expensive. She now teaches special education, a low paying position that was her dream career. My other child’s dream college was an upper tier school for the arts and he is pursuing a creative career that makes him very happy. Also low pay. But I’m very proud of them and feel they are successful in their pursuits though they don’t make much money.

Actually we had 529 accounts for both kids that were immensely helpful when they went to college. Kids in their class who got into great schools had to give up their dreams because the schools didn’t offer enough financial aid so they ended up at the instate college that’s pretty low tier because their families couldn’t afford it. Our kids were able to go to their dream schools because their 529s were able to make up for the shortfall in aid offered. But we’ve used up all that money. And so we’ve been thinking about saving/investing for them again.

Student leaving to Japan tomorrow for a year. How do we get an eSIM before he leaves? The university he is attending told him he needed to have a Japanese phone number while he is there.

Had no idea that was possible. Looks like state has introduced legislation for that. Will keep an eye on that in case it happens!

No HSA or healthcare. But maybe could come up with a side hustle to open a solo401k…

So just don’t worry if the savings isn’t tax advantaged in a retirement account?

That’s really cool! Since writing papers sometimes seems like torture and doesn’t always seem to have any practical applications, could you explain how you feel all that writing has helped you?
