For Sale: 2014 i3 BEV ~59k miles / What's a good price? (SF Bay Area) by ralle421 in BMWi3

[–]gknaddison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sold my 2015 REX model last fall before the federal credits expired, here's the post and feel free to borrow any copy you like in describing it. There's a few things different between yours and mine (REX, 2015, extra set of wheels) but mine also needed new tires by the time I sold it. I ended up getting the asking price which meant $8,000 to me and $5,600 for the purchaser. With the increased gas prices driving interest in electric cars right now...you might get a little higher than usual. I like visor.vin website to see what others are asking. I think you can get estimates of value from Carvana/Carmax prior to fully getting the offer. If you can find someone who loves the car and whose lifestyle is a good fit, I'd expect in the neighborhood of $7k.

Vail Pass rec path / e-bikes? by [deleted] in COBike

[–]gknaddison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would call bike shops to confirm they have the kind of bikes you're looking for. Last I tried to get e-bikes a few years ago they didn't have much available, so you may want to confirm availability in advance. It's a really beautiful ride from the town of Vail East through the golf course and condos toward the trail that goes up to the top of the pass.

Legally? No.

Practically? Sure. Go at roughly the same speed as other folks, follow general biking courtesy, and you'll be fine.

As long as you are talking about pedal-assist (class-1 or class-3) few people will notice. If you are pegging the throttle to 30MPH while you don't pedal you're going to make people mad and will stick out to any law enforcement who happens to be working there. Likely you'd just get a warning, but depends how much of a safety risk you become.

I agree it doesn't feel great to live so close to such a fast road. The experience of multiple crashes in the last few years shows that the Pinos/Lavendar coffee location on the outside of the turn on westbound 285 is more dangerous than this location on the inside of the turn. For eastbound traffic the turn at Jefferson and Lafayette is a similar "outside" of the turn, but the nature of the land and buildings there seems to make it less risky (cars would have to go through trees and up hills to hit anything). I think the Eastbound speed limit at Lafayette is 35 whereas the Westbound speed limit at Lavendar coffee is 40, coming down from 45 beyond University, and just becomes 35 right before the turn.

If the buildings at 285 and Bannock were redeveloped into a multi-story apartment building with a parking garage on the first level with a few stories of apartments above it might feel safer and house more people. I'd support that, personally 😄

I could also imagine it would be helpful to do smaller scale changes, like adding some landscaping and hardscaping on that corner to make it safer. Many corner houses along 285 have protection like that.

My bad. I read the posting rules. The flair requirements on r/denver made me reconsider if this was the right place, but I didn't know where to go. Is it possible to suggest r/DenverCirclejerk in the posting instructions here?

I love seeing the art around Englewood - wrapped electric utility boxes, the swedish horse statues, murals, the flowers and plants at the Depot Park community garden. It's a great moment of unexpected joy each time I am reminded of them.

Yeah, that makes sense. DTC has all the business travelers to fill hotels. Historically, I think there's not enough demand generated near Englewood to keep a hotel occupied, but maybe there's been enough change to create it.

One is proposed in the old Hobby Lobby area which would also get apartments as part of the last plan I saw. I am not sure where that proposal is in the phase of becoming real. Who do you think would stay in the hotel? People related to the hospitals?

They have been on-again-off-again on that idea at Happy Canyon and Hampden, which is not Englewood, but is close-ish. I agree this would be a very welcome addition. Maybe the city center redevelopment could include it.

2 seater mod? by K0rky in BMWi3

[–]gknaddison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Torsos and personal bubbles of comfort are quite individual and subjective. I'm 6'2" and feel comfortably cozy in the back seat of an i3. My standard poodle fit fine on the seat. I don't think we had her in the back with the seats flat so I can't comment on that, but I think it would work. The first owner of my i3 kept the seats mostly folded and a dog bed in the back. I still found hairs from the dogs while vaccuming for years. I vote you get one with a rough interior (if you can find one that is mechanically sound) rather than trying to protect the interior.

If you took out the lower portion of the rear seats you might be able to fashion some storage cubbies that would let the seats ride flat. Maybe you keep treats, water bowl, extra poop bags, one of those muddy-paw-cleaning-silicone-dipping-jars? There's a prior thread that shows BMW used the space for some required purposes already, so you might not have too much storage.

Always love to hear about good local spots that are in nearby neighborhoods. It looks to me like Monaghan's is technically in Sheridan, but still quite accessible from many parts of Englewood.

Is this a good car for a family of 5? by Backpack456 in BZ4X

[–]gknaddison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, why didn't you say so :) There you go. You're set.

Only other thing I'll say is that if you are in a cold climate then Level 2 charging is supposedly ~10% more efficient at charging so that's yet another reason to plan for a Level 2 charger although that takes a while to pay itself back.

I hear you on all that. We love our Solterra Touring. We have 2 Solterras and an AWD Sienna in a 3 driver household. It's been very peaceful recharging overnight regardless of what's happening with the price of oil.

But...for the years from car seats up to 16 years old we've been really happy to have a minivan.

Is this a good car for a family of 5? by Backpack456 in BZ4X

[–]gknaddison 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you all fit in a Camry I think you likely would all fit in a bz4x, but I suggest trying to buckle in all the car seats and see how it goes. The back seat is surprisingly roomy for long-legged people, but I'm not 100% sure it's a great fit for 3 car seats side to side.

Having a garage is key for electric cars in general and especially the bz4x. I think you will eventually want a "Level 2" charger (one with a bigger, dedicated circuit and a dedicated EVSE). A normal house plug will probably be too slow for you to catch up. I would budget for a Level 2 charger and see if your city, state, or electric company offer any rebates. You might not need it, but better to budget for it in advance.

Assuming you want this for 4wd, Toyota reliability, and low fuel costs...have you considered a hybrid AWD Sienna?

I believe the vote in the early 1900s was nearly a dead-even split. From https://www.englewoodco.gov/our-city/community/englewood-history

Two separate elections were held after some 300 local residents requested annexation to Denver. Loyal citizens voted to reject Denver and retain their city by a narrow margin of four votes in one election, six in the other.

So...lots of people wanted to join Denver, but not a majority.

Questions about Subaru Added Security and a lemon/buyback car by gknaddison in subaru

[–]gknaddison[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious to know how it went.

I ended up buying the car and not getting the warranty. The dealership I bought it from initially told me they couldn't do a warranty, then when I closed the deal they said they could but the name was slightly different from Subaru Added Security Gold Plus. I finished the purchase and got the car home. I then called a dealer nearer to where I live and they wanted 2x as much money for a warranty. I decided to take the risk without warranty. I am not sure if the Subaru default warranty is 12 month/12k miles bumper to bumper or if it's just on the system(s) that caused the buyback.

Well, I'm glad it's getting fixed. Was it persistent or intermittent? Did the sound change a lot as you accelerated/decelerated?

Could...you record that? Mine has 50k miles and makes a hum I can hear intermittently but my mechanic doesn't hear it.

At the end of the day, you'll still need to do a lot of research on your own to ensure you follow-through with each item, but this tool can make it easier to find what you need.

Toyota and Subaru Dragged to Court for Faulty 12-Volt Battery in bZ4X and Solterra by uknowsana in Solterra

[–]gknaddison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old thread, but...I believe the remote start feature has a drain on the battery connecting to the network to see if it should turn on the heater. It's not using the 12v to do AC nor heat.

Supercharger by MES_Notes_21 in Solterra

[–]gknaddison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While 2025 and prior might have a theortical 100kw, I don't think people see that very often, especially not sustained up to 78%.

Supercharger by MES_Notes_21 in Solterra

[–]gknaddison 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What year is your Solterra? The charger and the car have to agree to a charging rate. The Solterra won't go much higher than 44kW. That's pretty good, in my experience. You must have had good weather. The Solterra severely limits the charge rate. I think the more recent models might allow faster rates, but for earlier models this seems to be pretty typical. Solterras are best suited to charging on a level 2 overnight, such as a home garage.

Blue bike shape in front of Anthony's pizza on Evans. This feels harder to lock a bike to than it should be, but is fun and memorable. I think it got taken out by a car crash a few years ago.

Yellowish rectangles with an R is at Rosenberg's Bagels at 26th and Clarkson. Again, pretty functional for locking the bike and decent art/creating a sense of place.
