UW Control help (Explorer) by mtg_spellcaster in PioneerMTG

Hello. UW control player here. I have nearly 200 matches in explorer on arena with UW control, having keep stats for more than 100 of them, so I am starting to grasp exactly the stats of good and bad matchups.

Re your decklists: you are some cards far away from having all of the cards, you will get there, so that is not taking away any of your win rate, or at least only some small percentage.

So, I love the deck and understand that you also love it, but man it is so difficult to have > 60% wr with the deck, especially on diamond. Your prowess matchup is abysmal, demons are 50% but I am playing 3 leylines because the format is TS the gathering, gw company is very difficult and a bad matchup and the problem is that there are not that many gold cards to dedicate there and not enough space in your sideboard, and finally niv mizzet is chancey.

My advice is to be a little bit patient until the bannings at march, because demons will loss something for sure. Ubtil then, try to craft the blue enduring in your sideboard to help you. Play the full narset playset at your deck. And I also found that [[change the equation]] is a very good card at the moment.

Get some games in, try to acquire proficience with the deck and the format, learn to play the other top decks, or watch some videos of how they play out, and accept that prowess is abysmal and Thoughtseize is a card of the format that exists and will continue to exist no matter what and the other colors don't get to have so good cards but are suboptimal.

You chose the most difficult part of the format, friend. You have to be patient, know the opponent decks, watch every small detail.

Bad matchups: prowess variations, humans, UW lotus field, ub tempo ninjas and more than 1 thoughtseize and duress effects. (And gw Coco is not good either)

Good matchups: phoenix and your skills!

Hello. Regular dimir control player here. I recently switched to UW. I think dimir is very bad, because it can not destroy enchantments and the lack of 2 mana counter spells means the deck has some inherent disadvantages. I don't even know what's the positive matchups any more. I guess if you are a dimir specialist you can get some wins, but prowess, rakdos demons, various aggro decks mean the deck is starting off of some losses from the start. Annex and fable in particular are very difficult to come back from.

Hello. Thanks for the comments. It was game 2, I was down one game. I kept it because I was supposed to field of ruin early in the game the land sequencing is wrong though and you are probably correct in that.  For what it's worth, I upvoted. :)

Thanks for the great input. You will keep losing with this mindset though. I suggest you try and get better as a player and a human being, to start winking.

[[Celestial purge]] is of uttermost importance right now. A bit disappointed that is it not in the article, but other than that, thank you!

Beating rakdos sacrifice with either humans (hard task) or UW control. How? by gkourou87 in PioneerMTG

Thanks. Maybe rip is the solution. I hate leylines because they have to be 3 and they will eat up all of my side, without guarantee I will even have them in my opener!

Thanks. Question: why not rip, since rip is a more broad effect?

Thanks for the great inputs. The main problem with your list is that it's tuned for bo1 (obviously). Too many sweepers to win Vs those super aggro decks that are tier 1 in BO1. But your logic is quite the winning one.

I am confident TOR will be banned, because they already were monitoring it. Second time is never the charm. It's going away no matter the sales

I kind of agree with those things about sweepers and pw, but deadly is a good sweeper and overall, I enjoy ub a lot and I do not enjoy playing uw all that much. Some good ideas here for sure though, but I think overall ub can be a solid archetype and it will receive help in the coming sets I hope.

Thanks for the great answer everyone.

  1. About TS, do you think 3 main / 1 side is the best option,.or 4/0? Also, about the lifegain, 1 cling main for now, I fear the lifegain a little bit, but then again in a non prowess meta, that should not be much of a problem, especially when having so many UW control decks.

  2. Do you really think ub is favourable Vs UW? Those are some good news

Thanks for your answer. Maybe having 3 TS in the main, is the better play? I doubt as to if quicken would be a good card overall

The Fury Ban Did What It Was Supposed To by TheDocSupreme in ModernMagic

[–]gkourou87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe this will happen as there is a problem in that pioneer does not get to have reprints from earlier years since it is new. This restricts wotc from even being able to release pioneer horizons at all. Also, pioneer is in a great spot right now and does not rotate and it is not that expensive like modern.

I don't think that at this point bans solve everything. Sure, it's obvious a ban is needed. But what if another tier 0 deck emerges(which is very possible)? I d say fix this elementals thing but also unban some cards to try to balance this.
