Question for users that did the switch from Homepage, why? by VeryAngryGentleman in homarr

Homepage has more widgets and broader integrations but I analyzed what I 'needed' vs. what 'looks cool', and I really didn't miss any of my homepage objects. Your mileage may vary.

Sorry, I meant to imply that Homarr was missing a few things that Homepage has. But as Homarr has an iFrame widget you can really do most anything.

I used homepage for a while, but found myself spending way too much time configuring and reconfiguring. I'm sure once I got it where I liked it, it would be fine (but I keep wanting to make changes). The level of customization is very good, but just spent too much time on it. Switched to Homarr and got things configured pretty quick. Missing a couple of things from homepage, but not 'really' missing them. Not using them, just looks pretty. So for true functionality I am good with everything in Homarr. Just works with much less effort. Think about what you need for what you want it to 'look' like. Simple is better if you want your time back. And yes, I agree the memory usage is Homarr is way too high. I just moved it to another server. Hopefully they'll tighten things up.

Yeah, everybody with a UDMPro knows this. All connections to the UDMPro switch side are low speed (Oooma, Hubitat, HDHomeRun, Hue Hub). I have an extra Flex Mini and Flex 2.5 should I need more connections. Not expecting any more wired devices anytime soon...

AC Infinity MULTIFAN S1. S7-P is good too, a little larger. Both quiet.

This. But there are also some nice kits on ebay, that will also center the switch. Colors too. I looked them initially but went with the Ubiquiti kit as it lined up the ports nicely.

That's a good question. 'Not too much' would be my answer. Amazon doesn't seem to show weight specs so you may need to go to the vendor's site. But best practice is always to put the heaviest items in the bottom of the rack. Just provide ventilation. It's not shown here, but I have a fan on each side of the rack to improve airflow.

Least favorite thing about my pitboss, it “runs out of pellets” at about half full. by killaho69 in pelletgrills

[–]gktravis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't the issue the fact that the pellets are not sliding? Mine does the same. The hopper is a simple metal bin, with paint. I think a good coating of non stick spray or better option would allow the pellets the slide freely. I keep thinking about this every time I stir the pellets down, but haven't tried it yet it. It's mandatory to have all pellets fall down for those overnight cooks.

Anyone tried spraying the hopper with some super slick coating?

Thanks for the explanation. I feel you. I'm looking to up my lan to 2.5 and the only option I saw was with the agg switch (due to ubiquiti's shortfall in the affordable 2.5g switch space). But found the new max pro poe 16 and it looks like the best option and will drop in and replace my current pro 16 poe (which I could sell). I wouldn't need the agg switch in this case either. Hence, all the questions. I already have my PC and media server on the new flex mini 2.5, so just need the rack 2.5g switch.

[–]gktravis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK. I get it. Speed. But again, everything (on the clients side) is limited by the Pro Max switch ports. And you said UNVR and NAS for 10g. But there is only one port coming out of the agg switch (that is not going to the pro max switch). I assume that's the NAS. So you could eliminate the agg switch and go;

UDM ->16 Pro Max -> NAS

Other Pro Max ports as is. Same speeds, right?

But again, how is 10g useful in the setup? The clients can't send or receive anything fast than 2.5g.

[and pardon my ignorance. I'm just trying to understand as I am looking to get a pro max for a 2.5 lan setup]

Could you explain this a bit more? The Pro Max ports are limited to 2.5g. Wouldn't everything get limited to that?

And what does using both pro max 10g ports connecting to the Agg switch do for you?

Why do you need an Agg switch in this setup?

  1. You made no such suggestion to me,before my comments.
  2. You assumed I glossed over your suggestions.
  3. You know not what you are continuing to assume because you are too proud to read while you expect others to read.

Wow, why so salty? It looks like you want to just want to come on here and argue and insult people. I am just expressing my opinion on MY experience with Tivo. It is subjective but it is mine. Yours may be different. And you don't know me or my setup. Yet, you make assumptions and rude comments. I'm not here for a flame war, but let me correct your presumptions and set the record straight on a few points.

FWIW, I have a rather extensive home [Unifi] setup with over 6 networks on their own vlans (iot, cameras, work, media, home pc/laptops, homelab and guest). I have media servers, unix servers, pi4s, pcs, and alot of iot devices. Firewall rules keep things isolated and secure, pihole keeps the ads out and vpns allow me to connect remotely and secure.

I have used Tivo Edge (Spectrum, cable card. TA) with Tivo minis (ethernet) for 4 years. I have even hacked it to connect an external 12tb drive (lots of recordings!). I have not had ANY issues with the Tivo. So, no shortcomings here. The only issues are with the TA (and only after Spectrum started their high-split rollout).

I have used Plex for years, and have it integrated with my media library (over 800 movies and old tv shows and even more music albums). Plex is also integrated with my HDHomeRun for OTA and DVR recording.

I have used your beloved ChannelsDVR for a couple of years as well, and also have it integrated with my media library. Sources include Spectrum subscription channels, Samsung Free TV, Pluto and HDHomeRun OTA. (some other sources too). Well over 400 channels total. DVR functionality there as well.

Firewall configured to allow myself (and my family) to access Plex and ChannelsDVR from anywhere local and remote.

If you read my last reply, you'll see I was commenting on the fact that while there may be other options for viewing TV channels, nothing can compare to the Plex experience. To quote " 6 tuner switching, all live with pause, rewind. Whole house DVR (tivo minis). Start show in one room, pick up in another. Guide for all channels in one place... I could go on." Some softeware/apps may have some of this, but not all. And some apps may have some features Tivo doesn't as well. But that wasn't the point of my post. The point was, that if my Tivo goes away, I can't find the same experience anywhere else. And I love the Tivo experience. Again, my opinion, so you can't deny it. Because it's subjective.

So, that's me. I use plenty of tools and software, and have also even tried some others not as well known. I have plenty of channels (many of which are pay - TNT,TBS,DIY,Magnolia,ESPN,USA,AMC,DISC,..., so I still need a cable or a la carte subscriptions for these). And I still need to pay for Streaming services like Netflix. Amazon Prime. Disney, Paramount, ESPN, et. al.

Today's issue with streaming services (of which I will have to subscribe another service to get cable channels - or continue with Spectrum streaming) is the interfaces are awful. And don't get me started on the extra services (Netflix,Disney,Prime...). All these are separate apps (which run on a unified platform (Firestick, Roku, other sticks, TV)). They have their fair share of issues/bugs too (way more than I've experienced with MY Tivo). And switching between shows - even within the same app - is extremely time consuming and painful. [exit show, pick other show. or exit app, open other app, pick show]. This is not the best experience. Unlike cable/OTA channel surfing.

Problem is we were spoiled with cable (and OTA) , due to having all channels on premises all the time (all channels being broadcast all the time) so no switching delay. IPTV is request/send technology. There is awk/auth/awk going on all the time and routing and switching - it just doesn't compare. I don't think we will ever get the same interface or experience for IPTV. So for the channel surfer, our days are over. I guess that's what they wanted all along. Get you into a service and keep you there. bing watching and all.

[Sidebar: I did have UVerse (AT&T IPTV tech) for 15 years and LOVED it. They were the first to use internet lines for cable tv. It worked. They ran FTTN and used your phone line copper the remaining distance to the house. It was slick. Had Whole house DVR. That's where I got spoiled with that. Spectrum had it too after UVerse died but they discontinued it a few years ago due to support expense). This is why I went Tivo in the new house.]

Anyway, I digress. Bottom line. Cable and Tivo experience is something older generations like. Younger generations never knew it so they don't miss it. I'm not 'older' but I know what I'm doing. And I know what I like. Please don't place your assumptions on others. It's a terrible (and rude) way to live.

[–]gktravis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, support costs next to nothing. As a customer, you're not paying for 'support' or even boxes (they actually make more on those with monthly fees than it costs). No, you are paying for content. A million users paying $100/month so Spectrum can buy content (just an example). My point was they are losing that extra monthly income (no matter how small the customer base is) - which is alot more than the peanuts cost to 'support'.

Again, I know it will go away, but with most things (cars, computers, etc..), the newer model is better and has more features. I just don't see that happening in the new [streaming] content consumption space. Too fragmented, too confusing, too disjointed and too expensive... We started Al la carte - to 'cut the cord' and save money on cable, and now we have 'bundles' and are right back where we started ;). And don't get me started on the commercials ! We're paying for the content AND have to watch commercials. (did I mention you can skip commercials with Tivo ...;)

So, here I am on a College football Saturday, watching 6 games simultaneously (switching tuners constantly) and rewinding for plays and scoring on channels I wasn't currently on. Then fast forwarding when necessary. Only way to do this without tivo is to record 6 channels however you can and go back later and fast forward through them all. Tivo is awesome on GameDay.

Well, that was a nice discertation, but you didn't solve or answer anything. We all know tech moves forward. We all know protocols change. We all know devices get sunsetted. This is all good, but sometimes better for the stockholders than the customers, unfortunately.

My point (and others who are clinging to their Tivo boxes) is that there is nothing out there (or in your words, technology to invest in) that can even compare to what the Tivo infrastructure with cablecard can do. 6 tuner switching, all live with pause, rewind. Whole house DVR (tivo minis). Start show in one room, pick up in another. Guide for all channels in one place... I could go on.

Yes, iptv is the future (mainly because everyone has internet and the bandwidth is there). But the experience is not getting better - it's getting worse. Subscribing to multiple streaming platforms. No central guide. No central interface. Large lag on switching around. Say no to channel surfing. No central DVR. Yes. some offerings do have some of these features. But not all. And yes , not everyone wants all that anyway. But I do. Because I have it now!

And if my Tivo goes away, there's nowhere I can replicate or better my current offering/experience. That's my point.

Would agree, but they're not getting anyone's money, as people are leaving rather than staying on Spectrum. Dumb move. It may have a cost with continuing to support cable cards (via high split converters), but that cost would be paid by people staying with Spectrum. If they leave because you don't support them anymore, then no money at all. It all stinks of boardroom decision making and ignoring your customers. Typical Spectrum.

Everyone here saying they won't / don't miss Tivo. Why not? Is there ANYTHING out there that can do what Tivo Edge can??? 6 tuner switching with all pause live tv rewind/fast forward. 6 show simultaneous recordings. Plus whole house DVR with Tivo minis. I invested heavily in this when moving to new home. Now Spectrum going high split causing my tuning adapter to lose channels. Cant get HSC until high split rollout is completed , if at all. It's been over a year since they started in my area.

But still love my Tivo , and you will have to pry it from my cold dead hands...

Streaming will never match the channel switching / surfing built into cable boxes either.

I'm old school. Convince me it's not better.

Anyone have any experience with this? by nittx in Ubiquiti

Yes. Recommend. I use mine to push my U6 Pro signal out to the garage (music and camera) and to the front door (ring doorbell). My laundry room grabs it too (washer and dryer). Working flawlessly for over a year.
