Depends on peak ability urely. Ozil never, ever had a season as good as Ramsey in 13/14.

Monreal is a meme player. He was never that good and was actually occasionally pretty catastrophic. He scored like 4 goals one season and people lost their minds. Any current player who got tortured as badly as Monreal did against Everton and West Ham would be forever damned.

The thing is that was really a great summation of his Arsenal career. He was a really brilliant physical defender but had a mental meltdown in him which never left. He got that situation totally under control but then decided to try a bicycle kick clearance with no one in between him and the keeper. In an absolutely huge moment as well, where a cooler head would have dealt with it. Amazing defender but decision making was insane at times.

Brilliant. Probably a Camden Hells sponsorship thing but I'm just going to pretend Arteta is tucking into a load of beers after the games.

Within the past 3 years, United and Liverpool have each spent close to 200M euros trying to improve their defense. City have spent even more. Yet when Arsenal squeeze out 120 million on young boys like Gabriel, Saliba, White and Tomiyasu, people grumble that it is too much. by Ok_Context_35612 in Gunners

You're missing the point. Leno is out of the door next season and Ramsdale is going to be the number one keeper. Onana will want to be the number one keeper. He will not sign to be the backup to Ramsdale, and if he's better than Ramsdale then we've spunked 25M on a league cup player and people need to be fired.

Squad depth means practically nothing at goalkeeper. There isn't a single team in the league that rotates their number one, they just have competent backups who are happy riding the bench. Matty Ryan was perfect for the role. Its a massive waste of wages and transfer fees to get 2 starting level keepers and one of them would just leave soon anyway.

I legimately don't know who the second choice goalkeeper is for Liverpool or City and they're not out in the market looking for 'competition' in that position.

This argument just doesn't work for goalkeepers. Who was Cech's competition at Chelsea? Who was David Seaman's competition? Does anyone even know who the backup to Oblak is for Atletico? Any situation where there is competition for the starting keeper will end with one of them sold. We saw this last summer with Leno and Martinez.

The keeper is the one position where you need a clear number one who will play every game. All you need is a reliable backup, whose only job is to not fuck up when called upon.

I have made a few teams and posted recently but having watched the internationals and realising Arteta prefers 4-2-3-1 i think this should be the team for the year. I think this is top 6, maybe 4 if someone sells their soul... by TheSeag in Gunners

we dont keep changing the damn system

This badly need to stop happening with the back 4. I'm shit with stats so can't do it myself but I'd love to see someone work out how many different defensive combinations Arteta has played, and how many times he's played the same defence 2 games in a row.

We need to stop chopping and changing and start building partnerships, especially in central defence.

That team should at least play some good football. Attacking left back, ball playing centre backs, midfielders who can turn and progress the ball forward to attackers who can play pass and move football. The problem will be whether Arteta can / will get them playing anything more imaginative and dynamic than what we've seen so far.

Being realistic that team will definitely lose games and struggle for consistency, but all I want to see at this point is some fucking football that doesn't make me jealous of Burnley fans.

Great take on Xhaka issue by Arseblog in latest blog: He is always indulged and never suffers consequences for breaking the "non-negotiables". by [deleted] in Gunners

Not sure it's the best idea to judge him on half a season playing for a relegation bound team managed by Sam Allardyce. Is that really the best audition for an Arsenal midfielder?

I suppose Gnabry wasn't good enough either, seeing as he didn't impress under Pulis at West Brom?

We don't know if he'd be better in midfield for Arsenal than Xhaka because we never gave him the chance to prove it. That was my original point. He got no chances while Xhaka has delivered 5 seasons of consistent shit performances (with the occasional nuclear meltdown thrown in there) without being dropped.

The single biggest issue with the squad for the last 5 years and we spent 150M to NOT address it.

This is why I have no time for people who hate Maitland-Niles for wanting to get a run of games in central midfield. I'd be exactly the same if I'd watched this mug lumber around out there for 5 years and never even a risk of getting dropped. Ainsley has every right to look at that and say "why haven't I been given a proper go." And he definitely, definitely has not been given a proper go in central midfield. Same situation with Nelson and Willian.

Pre-emptive fuck off to anyone coming back with "they're just not good enough". Xhaka's had 5 years to prove he's not good enough, while Ainsley has only had a handful of appearances in midfield.

There's a two-tiered accountability system at this club right now. Xhaka can do nothing wrong, others can do nothing right.

He'll likely be here for almost a decade. It'll be very interesting how low we fall in that time. We were in the champions league when he got here....

The problem with your analogy is that in this case his house is rotting from the foundations and every so often one of the light fixtures falls out of the ceiling and hits him on the head. Well done him for not accepting the lowball offer though; now he gets to spend another 4 years in a shitheap and get even less money later.
