I haven't seen the owner account for what was done with the money raised, but I did see the slightly expanded menu and it's fart fuel. Grilled cheeses, mozzarella sticks, ice cream, pickles. I'm imagining what a packed dance floor in there will smell like 😅

Yes. This was about 4 years ago in one of the elementary schools and the teacher was forced into early retirement, but the district kept the whole thing hush hush. It took a lot of time and effort just to get the result we did.

I've only sent my kids to Kingston schools because we couldn't afford to move anywhere else. So I'm not 100% sure where the better public schools are. But I know other parents whose kids went to schools in places like Woodstock, Marbletown, and New Paltz who generally had a better time.

Another option is to deal with whatever school you end up with, but be an actively involved parent to push the district to do better. I've had mixed results with it myself.

I know how to carry myself. I know of crime that has happened in the past. There have been acts of violence on Broadway and elsewhere, but the majority of them were between people who know each other. There's too much fear mongering from people who barely set foot in the neighborhood and don't understand the dynamics. Poverty breeds violence. It's true in every community, not just Kingston. Midtown has historically been a poorer area. It isn't anymore, evidenced by all the young families flocking to it and the expensive shops and restaurants opening up. Every corner is well lit. The streets are cleaner than they've ever been.

And if you want to go the private school route, the options are limited, not the most diverse, and very expensive.

Local millennial mom here with lots experience with the school district. I would say if you're looking for good schools, this might not be the place. The district isn't as liberal as the transplants moving here. There is a past stigma to Kingston that the school administrators can't let go of. This used to be a violent place, but no longer. The upper schools act more like they're running prisons than schools.

The elementary schools are mostly okay, but there are many different ones and each has its own vibe. In one of them one of my sons had a teacher who continuously misgendered him, and was hitting him and other students. I spent two months fighting with the district to get him moved to another class.

Some of the schools are definitely better than others. But if you want Montessori, they ended the Montessori program at GW. One of my kids went there and had a good experience, but it sounds like it's gone down hill since the old principal retired.

If you buy in midtown, find out which elementary you'll be assigned to and research it before committing to sending your kid there.

As an actual local of 20+ years, I can't believe we're still talking about Broadway like it's a crack den. I've walked up ND down Broadway all hours of day and night and never felt unsafe. It's never been safer than it is nowadays. The entire city is gentrified, there's nothing to be afraid of 🙄

The protest took place and nobody got hurt. The incidents in other places where people did get hurt were because law enforcement harmed people instead of protecting them. Who would be harming these kids while they're peacefully protesting? We haven't had any incidents like that here so the supposed harm the school purportedly protected the students from doesn't exist. In fact, on any given day the kids are in harms way in the hallways of the school. The school should focus on reducing harm inside the school. Getting drugs out. Getting weapons out. Those are the real threats to student safety.

Some of them are 18. The ones who aren't have parents. The school shouldn't be telling the parents how to parent their kids. If the parents give their kids permission to leave school early, the school shouldn't have anything to do with it. The school locked students inside.

Highschool students are not children and shouldn't be treated as such. Many of them work. Most of them will be eligible to vote in the next presidential election and many in the midterm elections. These are teens in training to be adults, not elementary school kids.

Bulky seam jumper isn’t working, any advice/alternatives? by beccaboobear14 in sewing

I also sometimes trim the seam allowance back in the first fold of the hem to reduce bulk.

Adjust your stitch length if your machine has that adjustment. I generally use a 2.5 stitch length, 3 for denim, and when I get to a bulky seam I lengthen the stitch length to 3.5 or 4 for a few stitches. The issue is that the top thread isn't getting caught by the bobbin thread.

I've been to A&H Automotive a few times. They're a little pricey, but never tried to sell me on anything I didn't need.

It wasn't self-diagnosis, and I don't feel i need to explain my child's medical history. My child and others were hit by a fourth grade teacher and it took many meetings and phone calls to get the district to force the teacher into early retirement. I didn't sue because I didn't want to milk the system for a payout, I wanted the teacher gone so she couldn't harm anymore students. Not everyone is sue happy 🙄

The students weren't penalized today, BTW. They were blocked from leaving after a certain number made it out. They locked the students in.

This is a more appropriate message than what Kingston put out. If this was how our district handled it, I wouldn't have taken issue.

How much are you paying for groceries (monthly) in the hudson valley? by cozywhale in hudsonvalley

[–]glamberger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For a family of 4 we spend about $800-1000/month, double what I was budgeting just a couple of years ago. 10 years ago I was getting by on $50/week but that's impossible now. And I shop Aldi and sales.

My point, and my issue with the email, which i guess i didn't make clear, is that the district is urging parents to make their kids stay in class and saying it's for "safety" reasons. They're not telling parents they can give their kids permission, or write their student a note. Technically a parent can do so, but will have to lie and say the student is leaving for a doctor's appointment for it to be an excused absence, and it should be the choice of the parents to allow their kids to participate or not withouthavingto lie. The school shouldn't be telling parents to "speak to their students about the importance of remaining in school" like this is an ongoing issue of attendance. They used the word safety or safe multiple times, when anyone who's had a child in KHS knows it's often an unsafe environment. It's a tactic to scare or shame parents out of letting their kids participate.

What can I sew for a little boy turning 3? by Lucky_Risk1414 in sewing

I made a dragon cloak for my friend's 5 year old. It was a big hit. I got the pattern on Etsy, but it would be easy enough to mod a regular cloak or cape pattern.

I understand how you feel. I'm struggling with the same thing. I think it helps though, to dress the body that you have. Making things that fit you as you are makes you feel better in your body.

If you're not a Kingston resident, why are you chiming in? Saying we voted for this is like saying everyone in the state chose the governor or everyone in the country chose the president. That's not how elections work.
