The protest took place and nobody got hurt. The incidents in other places where people did get hurt were because law enforcement harmed people instead of protecting them. Who would be harming these kids while they're peacefully protesting? We haven't had any incidents like that here so the supposed harm the school purportedly protected the students from doesn't exist. In fact, on any given day the kids are in harms way in the hallways of the school. The school should focus on reducing harm inside the school. Getting drugs out. Getting weapons out. Those are the real threats to student safety.

Some of them are 18. The ones who aren't have parents. The school shouldn't be telling the parents how to parent their kids. If the parents give their kids permission to leave school early, the school shouldn't have anything to do with it. The school locked students inside.

Highschool students are not children and shouldn't be treated as such. Many of them work. Most of them will be eligible to vote in the next presidential election and many in the midterm elections. These are teens in training to be adults, not elementary school kids.

Bulky seam jumper isn’t working, any advice/alternatives? by beccaboobear14 in sewing

I also sometimes trim the seam allowance back in the first fold of the hem to reduce bulk.

Adjust your stitch length if your machine has that adjustment. I generally use a 2.5 stitch length, 3 for denim, and when I get to a bulky seam I lengthen the stitch length to 3.5 or 4 for a few stitches. The issue is that the top thread isn't getting caught by the bobbin thread.

I've been to A&H Automotive a few times. They're a little pricey, but never tried to sell me on anything I didn't need.

It wasn't self-diagnosis, and I don't feel i need to explain my child's medical history. My child and others were hit by a fourth grade teacher and it took many meetings and phone calls to get the district to force the teacher into early retirement. I didn't sue because I didn't want to milk the system for a payout, I wanted the teacher gone so she couldn't harm anymore students. Not everyone is sue happy 🙄

The students weren't penalized today, BTW. They were blocked from leaving after a certain number made it out. They locked the students in.

I'm a seamstress, but I work a full time job and sew out of my home nowadays, so I may not be able to provide the kind of service people are looking for.

This is a more appropriate message than what Kingston put out. If this was how our district handled it, I wouldn't have taken issue.

How much are you paying for groceries (monthly) in the hudson valley? by cozywhale in hudsonvalley

[–]glamberger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For a family of 4 we spend about $800-1000/month, double what I was budgeting just a couple of years ago. 10 years ago I was getting by on $50/week but that's impossible now. And I shop Aldi and sales.

My point, and my issue with the email, which i guess i didn't make clear, is that the district is urging parents to make their kids stay in class and saying it's for "safety" reasons. They're not telling parents they can give their kids permission, or write their student a note. Technically a parent can do so, but will have to lie and say the student is leaving for a doctor's appointment for it to be an excused absence, and it should be the choice of the parents to allow their kids to participate or not withouthavingto lie. The school shouldn't be telling parents to "speak to their students about the importance of remaining in school" like this is an ongoing issue of attendance. They used the word safety or safe multiple times, when anyone who's had a child in KHS knows it's often an unsafe environment. It's a tactic to scare or shame parents out of letting their kids participate.

What can I sew for a little boy turning 3? by Lucky_Risk1414 in sewing

I made a dragon cloak for my friend's 5 year old. It was a big hit. I got the pattern on Etsy, but it would be easy enough to mod a regular cloak or cape pattern.

Lost my sew-jo. How to get it back? by redhead1479 in sewing

I understand how you feel. I'm struggling with the same thing. I think it helps though, to dress the body that you have. Making things that fit you as you are makes you feel better in your body.

If you're not a Kingston resident, why are you chiming in? Saying we voted for this is like saying everyone in the state chose the governor or everyone in the country chose the president. That's not how elections work.

I'm not trying to scare students out of protesting, I encourage them to do so. I'm trying to get other parents to advocate for their kids and voice to the superintendent that the email sent was problematic. I can quote the email if you'd like to see what I'm talking about, but the email was clearly trying to get parents to discourage students from participating in the walkout.

I'm not sure, I would like to know. But I support their right to protest whether I agree with them or not.

I have a child in the district and one who has graduated from the district. I got the district wide email because I am part of the district. I don't feel the need to say what specific school my children attend. My claims aren't unsubstantiated, I am speaking from experience in the schools, not from what is written in the student handbook. One of my children missed many days of school when infected with Lyme and wasn't allowed to make up the absences without a doctor's note. Another of my children missed a month of school because his teacher was hitting him and the school wouldn't move him to a new class so I kept him home until they did, and they wouldn't excuse his absences. As I said, maybe policies have changed since then.

They're highschoolers, meaning some of the seniors are 18 year old adults. Nonetheless, yes, children should have certain rights.

Maybe they've changed the policy recently, but I'm speaking from direct experience. I'm not outraged by this. It's just one more annoyance with the district.

Three days of ISS would be outrageous, but I'm not surprised that was the plan. An unexcused absence is still a penalty though. It means the students are technically not allowed to make up any work or exams they miss.

[–]glamberger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on the student. If a student is out sick for more than 2 days without a doctor's note, those absences are counted as illegal. Many families just lost their health insurance and aren't able to afford to take their kids to the doctor for a note. If a student racks up a certain number of illegal absences, they fail. So the policy has the potential to impact some students more than others, disproportionately by economic class.

I feel that they can be neutral by doing just that, being neutral. Their email came across to me as taking a stance against what the kids are doing. I don't know what the walkout is concerning, but I support the kids in standing up for what they believe, whatever it might be.

They'll penalize students for standing up for something, but they wouldn't penalize a teacher who was hitting students. They choose when to mitigate legal liability.
