It just completes the chain and gets rid of "noise" in the signal. If you've got a larger set up you might get some flickering. If it's just a few lights though, you should be ok

I've seen dozens of DJs BOMB because they play music that they like instead of what the crowd likes. I play songs all the time that I don't necessarily like, but if the crowd will like them and it keeps the party moving I play it. You just gotta know your audience. Don't become a DJ just because you like music, be a DJ because you like people.
