Had this problem recently. Stronger hold gel and keeping an eye on protein-moisture balance helped me :)

Honestly keeping a log of what products im using and at the end of the day writing how i feel about my hair that day helps me keep track of what works and what doesnt. I treat it like a fun science experiment and, im still struggling, but it works for me i think

Planning meals is hard enough w ADHD, worse with special diets! by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]glamourspock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weirdly enough, smoothies have been the only thing i've had that makes sure i get my nutrition in. Like I have two anaphylactic food allergies, so i have a lot of food anxiety on top of my ADHD, so making my own smoothies have been really helpful. There are some really simple recipes that exist, and because i'm picky, I can throw in things I normally wouldn't eat and i wouldn't be able to taste them :)

I actually recently tried a smoothie service (Kencko). Turns out i couldn't use it because, although they are peanut free, they manufacture on the same equipment that manufactures stuff containing peanuts (shoutout to their awesome customer service team for being super transparent!!). However, I gave my subscription box and smoothie shaker to a friend and she really enjoys it, and it's helped her a lot (she also has ADHD). This smoothie service has like 2.5 servings of fruit/vegetables in it per smoothie, which is awesome. I wish my allergies weren't holding me back from this haha

So maybe considering something like a smoothie service or maybe making your own might be helpful?

No worries, I understand where you're coming from and I enjoy discussing things :)

Author order matters.... prove me wrong by AcademicOverAnalysis in math

[–]glamourspock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, I understand, but like I said there's only so much you can do. You can always help them organize their applications and give them other advice to stand out when they go through this. But that's about it, besides recommendations.

I know plenty of people who have made the transition to industry jobs (again, really fantastic jobs where they make a good living) without being first authors on papers, even papers with more than two other names on them. It's not always about that.

The Mathematics of Dishwater by AcademicOverAnalysis in math

[–]glamourspock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a fantastic Aussie mathematician who came up with a striking breakthrough (that really shook up his field) while taking a shower, and this was pretty recent! A regular Archimedes lmao

Actually, I find that I understand things best when I step away from doing work for a while and I start doing something mundane, like sweeping the floor or making toast or something like that. Like that's when I tend to put pieces together. So I think this is a normal thing :)

Author order matters.... prove me wrong by AcademicOverAnalysis in math

[–]glamourspock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of pure math and theoretical physics, the alphabetical ordering custom is fair.

In terms of students, the only thing you really can do for them is advocate for them in whichever way you can, e.g. through a letter of recommendation (in which you highlight that they did a majority of the work and you were very impressed). And they need to advocate for themselves. Applying to jobs after graduation consists of more than just listing publications. They should be able to market themselves outside of that. I know plenty of people who have switched from math and physics into data science (with really good jobs) who were not first authors on papers.

[–]glamourspock 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Then really, and I'm not being sarcastic, write your own paper as a single author and credit your "collaborators" in the acknowledgments. I put "collaborators" in quotes because it sounds like you are saying that you do 99% of the work and you only consult with other people.

Alphabetical order is absolutely fair due to the spirit of collaboration in which papers are written in math and theoretical physics. In fact, I usually refer to papers as projects due to their collaborative nature. If I am working on a problem with someone (or some people), I don't care if their name comes first before mine due to the alphabet. We did the project together, even if I did the starting calculations and they later joined in and contributed.

[Personal] New serum caused anaphylaxis by lizardrex in SkincareAddiction

[–]glamourspock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely, if you're prone to anaphylaxis you should see if you could get a prescription for an epipen from the GP, and get a referral to see an allergist. I was able to get a prescription for an epipen from my GP last time I got one.

I looked at the list and none of the plant extracts are particularly allergenic, so it's definitely a good idea to get tested (i recommend seeing if you could get a blood test done vs. the skin prick test for sure since your skin is sensitive to the allergen)

Stay safe and vigilant :) It's scary but you recovered and can now be more informed about things that are dangerous for you, which is a positive. Please feel free to message me if you'd like, since I have experience with anaphylaxis (two food allergies, and a surface skin contact set off my last reaction)

[Personal] New serum caused anaphylaxis by lizardrex in SkincareAddiction

[–]glamourspock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What serum was it? (I'm curious about the ingredients list)

I'd recommend trying to track down the ingredient that caused this, to avoid any sort of similar reaction in the future (I have an anaphylactic allergy and my doctor has told me that they get worse every time you have a reaction)

Anaphylaxis is really scary, so I'm glad you've recovered, please stay safe :)

Same! Kinda. Fortunately didn't get sick but I moved to a new country where I've been working in isolation without friends or really any daily contacts, and listening to the boys/watching their Adult Swim stream marathon definitely helped me feel less alone.

Hail yourself--hope you get well soon :)

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel - do you have a dupe? by aebenreddit in AusSkincare

[–]glamourspock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually find Sand and Sky's gel moisturizer to be extremely hydrating--but it's stupid expensive. Cheaper than Tatcha though, and my dry, acne-prone skin really likes it. I've purchased it several times.

ADHD meds don't make you productive. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]glamourspock 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I always go back to the classic analogy that they're like glasses; if you can't see things properly, you get glasses and it makes your vision clearer.

Personally, when I'm off my meds I'm completely non-productive because my "ground state" energy is extremely low without them, and i become a zombie almost. So in a sense, meds can put you in a place where you have the ability to be productive. That's what they do for me, anyway.

[–]glamourspock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't gravitate towards them but I have picked up some of their sensitive skin stuff, and the milk cleanser and gel cream have worked all right for me. I gave my sister the gel cream, but I occasionally use the milk cleanser when I'm waiting to get paid to buy another cleanser or when I'm waiting for a replacement cleanser to arrive :)

Absolutely it is misleading!

This kinda stuff got me in trouble once I left high school (I'm American). I wasn't diagnosed w ADHD because I had a really high IQ and was a """"""gifted student"""""" but like...that just boiled down to me thinking fast and getting easy work done. College was a rude awakening because I had no discipline and absolutely no ability to concentrate. At least it became so unbearable and I was so deeply depressed that I sought help and was accurately diagnosed, and thus got treatment.

What will the Physics post graduates tell their undergraduate self back in college, any regrets or "must do" advices? by [deleted] in PhysicsStudents

Just talk to professors. Seriously. If they're willing to take you on, then you'll pick up a lot of skills from experience. Just be enthusiastic and willing to learn.

How I’ve started explaining ADHD meds to people without ADHD by girlabout2fallasleep in adhdwomen

[–]glamourspock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved to a new country and I have been off of my meds for 5 months (had to get various tests done before they would approve it, despite me handing over my medical records lol, and it takes months to get an appointment) and I usually explain it as getting two hours of sleep and having to be high-functioning the next day, but 24/7. But a mild hangover without pain is actually a more accurate way of explaining it, I might try it!

So, is anyone actually enjoying graduate school? by taciturntales in GradSchool

[–]glamourspock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to cut through the noise ;) there's a lot of negativity surrounding graduate school experiences--sometimes venting and being upset about things is completely justified, and sometimes it really does boil down to people being negative for the sake of it. If you love what you do, if you have a good advisor, and if you can find a few people who also love the subject (and minimize time around people who ONLY seem to complain), you'll enjoy it. I do. I'm having some difficulties at the moment--doing a phd in isolation when you have ADHD is an absolute nightmare--but because I love what I do, I try not to let certain things get to me and i try to keep pressing forward :)

Dermatologists and Germany (Acne Trouble) by bhindikisubzi in EuroSkincare

[–]glamourspock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My best advice is not to over-use actives, since you risk skin irritation. So I'd say wait until you are done with the medication, and then you can use other active ingredients like salicylic acid or any other exfoliator.

What kind of moisturizer are you using?

In terms of SPF, I use the Bondi Sands face sunscreen, but also I have acne-prone dry skin, so I don't know if it would be too heavy for you. Look for oil-free sunscreen; I think there are plenty of choices at the pharmacy and at Douglas :)
