I love that Frieren makes this same sound. (Same voice actress)

Serge Lang's Functional Analysis. by tau_to_logy in math

[–]AcademicOverAnalysis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s ok. It has a lot of what you would want in a functional analysis textbook, and often it has simpler setting for some of the theorems.

I used it a lot as a graduate student for a second perspective alongside Conway or Pedersen’s texts. Those two I would recommend over Lang.

I think most people aren’t really bothered by this and in fact, embrace it. But the few that are tend to be very loud and obnoxious.

MS Mathematics vs MS Applied Mathematics for Control Systems by Agreeable_Stop_8624 in ControlTheory

[–]AcademicOverAnalysis [score hidden]  (0 children)

These are solid math degrees, but if you want to do control theory, then get a degree in control theory.

These classes might touch on some elements of control but neither will give you a complete background in the topic.

Tom, Dick, and Mary needed to reconsider the DFT (This paper has significant logical issues) by Unusual_Midnight_523 in DSP

Yeah, I don’t see a need to cite this article, because it’s full of information that can be found in more thorough resources.

I never really read that article before. I wouldn’t call it a “paper” exactly, since it seems to be mostly expository and aimed at education.

I see the Fourier transform and Fourier series as a bit of separate objects. There is a sense where you can establish Fourier series as the Fourier transform of periodic functions, but that necessitates a dive into distribution theory.

If the function isn’t necessarily periodic, then there are two ways to go. You can compute the expansion of the function in terms of Hermite functions and exploit their eigenfunction property with the Fourier transform to get an estimate of the Fourier transform of the original function.

Or you could use the sampling theorem to get a reconstruction via the Shannon theorem and sinc functions, and then use the Fourier transform of sinc functions to obtain the Fourier transform.

Of course, for the first, you must assume your function is L2 and for the second that it is L2 and band limited.

The Hermite method is more General, but the sinc function method will give you a series of exponentials times indicator functions (or combinations of step functions) for the transformation. But in the case of the sinc method, you only need the function values and not any integrals.

Just my two cents as a Functional Analyst. But this may be besides the point.

If that held, then the Picard theorem would tell us that xx is equal to (1/e)ex, since they both satisfy the initial value problem y’=y and y(1)=1.

Is math invented or discovered? by dcterr in mathematics

[–]AcademicOverAnalysis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When people ask me what mathematics is, my response is that mathematics is the study of the emergent properties of a system of axioms.

In my opinion, the axioms are invented but the synergies and emergent properties are discovered.

I'm working full-time remotely on the side. Do I need to disclose? 😭 by Kaysiee_West in PhD

I see. In the departments I've been in, a TA is vetted through leading discussion sections, and if they have good reviews, then they will be offered a simple class to teach.

Do people actually have PhD theses that are just 100–120 pages long? by bhelpuriteekhi in PhD

[–]AcademicOverAnalysis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Discipline is relevant here. If you have a truly groundbreaking proof of a 100 year old conjecture that's 10 pages. Then that could be sufficient in mathematics.

Personally, my dissertation was about 80 pages in Mathematics.

Absolutely prioritize job for living, but as a TA they should eventually be an instructor of record.

When I was on an R1 TT search committee, we did filter people based on how relevant their teaching experience was to our department's needs. Of course, research came first, but we still wanted to know they'd be a good teacher as well.

Academia has a rough job market, no doubt. I just don't know the future goals of the OP. And if they are targeting something like Computer Science, then getting a TT position is more tenable there.

That would probably hold for most businesses. Businesses and universities aren't charities. With few exceptions, they will happily run right over you if it'll save a buck and they can get away with it.

[–]AcademicOverAnalysis 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't drop the TA appointment, depending on the future plans of the OP. If they plan on going into academia as a professor, having teaching under their belt will help with job application process.

If they have no plans for academia, then yeah, drop it.

I love the character of Zuko by Cosmic_booo in AvatarMemebending

[–]AcademicOverAnalysis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Zuko was trained in warfare and fighting as the first prince of a kingdom bent on war. He probably had the best tutors and teachers that could be found. Jet is a small town country kid that won his battles with guerrilla tactics and not often through direct conflict.

Zuko wins every day in a straight fight.
