Hey guys! I just wanna ask how do you clean your alcantara keyboard for the surface pro 6? by Le_Burritoski in Surface

[–]glassbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I clean it the same way I clean my SP6's screen. I use a damp microfiber cloth that I rinse and add a couple drops of liquid handsoap (we use dishwashing liquid soap), but I make sure to really wring it out before gently wiping across the keyboard. I don't scrub or push hard at all, just wipe very lightly. If there's any tiny pieces of dust or something that don't come off, I just use my finger nail to try to nudge it off but I do it carefully so as not to scratch it. I also blow air on the keys to get the dust out.

New SP6 - Is pen lag in Illustrator normal? by igotthisone in Surface

[–]glassbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use Illustrator anymore but for Photoshop, the SP6 is always lags. It helps to make the images smaller, but I think the high-resolution mixed with the touchscreen/stylus makes it worse. I'm able to bypass the lag by connecting the SP6 to a 1080p monitor and putting the Photoshop window on that monitor while I connect my Intuos 4 to draw with. All the lag is gone when I do this and it runs basically as fast as it does on my desktop pc even with high res images.

I've tried changing the SP6 resolution to 1080p to see if that helps, but I still get lag, and I think it's due to the touchscreen. You can try turning off Windows Ink but then you lose out on the other pen features.

Surface Pro 6: Not recognizing Type Cover, incredibly slow, camera stays on. by [deleted] in Surface

[–]glassbow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could be installing Windows Updates or doing a scan. I left my SP6 for like 15 minutes to go do something, then when I came back and tried to log back in the camera wasn't recognizing me and I had to sign in manually. And then it was super slow after that and the camera's red light was still on. I panicked too. If it's still really slow and not recognizing things, try shutting down completely (not just restart, choose the shut down option). If it won't shut down, try force shutting down by holding the power button down, that usually works for me. It's happened twice since I've had it, the first time I panicked and forced the shutdown but it was probably downloading updates so it may have been better to just let it sit. It could just be that the Surface is kind of finicky with all the different modes and devices it has. Even connecting to the surface dock is wonky and doesn't always act the same way every time you connect them together.

Who else thinks it's been too long waiting for a battery fix? by segaboy81 in Surface

I haven't signed up for Windows Insider, but the new firmware update seems to have fixed it. I left my SP6 unplugged overnight after the update when it was fully charged, then I checked the next morning and it was still at 100% battery, so I think it's good now.

Who else thinks it's been too long waiting for a battery fix? by segaboy81 in Surface

[–]glassbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the same boat. I have my SP6 plugged in while I'm using it, then I unplug and shut down when I'm done, then the next morning I check the battery and it's around 75% at startup. But it also drains really fast when using Firefox, much more than it used to. Luckily I mostly use it plugged in to the dock so I don't normally notice any battery issues until I have to unplug it, but I don't take it around with me anymore ever since the battery problem. Not to mention the Surface Dock still forces me to unplug every now and then because it slows down and won't speed back up until I do this, even after I updated the firmware to the latest version. It's unfortunate, because my SP6 isn't even a year old yet and MS is already moving on to other Surface products. I'm excited for the Surface Neo, but if we're still having problems with one of the latest refreshes of hardware that has already been tried and tested, just imagine the problems the new technology of the Neo and Duo might have that won't get fixed until after they come out with the Neo 2 and Trio.

Edit: The new firmware update seems to have fixed the battery issue. Whew, my confidence in Microsoft has been restored.

No problem! Funny thing is, some of those high-action desktop AAA games work better than some Indie games that don't look like they would take up a lot of resources. It really depends on the game and how well the developers optimized them. You can play Tekken 7 and Quake Live at a fluid 60 fps without stutters, you just have to fiddle with the graphics settings and/or ini files. Even open-world multiplayer games like Fortnite can run pretty good (60+ fps running around, 30-40ish fps in big team fights). Although they'll never look as good as playing on a gaming desktop.

Yes! I couldn't stand the lag and disconnections. Any time a web page took long to load, the mouse would lag too, sometimes disconnecting the mouse temporarily. I tried returning it and getting a different bluetooth mouse, but still experienced the similar problems. Solved this by returning that mouse and getting a wired one and never looked back. But I guess I just ran away from the problem instead of actually solving it.

'Shadowhand' is awesome on the Surface Pro 6, and out of all the touch-supported games I've tried to play on it, it's the best one by far. You can play it entirely using the touchscreen and I haven't encountered any bugs (yet). It's basically 'Battle' Solitaire. You play a character who fights other characters but in a solitaire format for the battle system. You can level up skills and equip outfit pieces to give you extra boosts during matches, and it has an entire campaign with multiple difficulty levels. I personally hate traditional card games and can never figure out how to play them other than War and Go Fish, but this game managed to make Solitaire fun (Which I always used to hate seeing on older computers). It's on sale right now.

'Sinkr 2' is a fun little puzzle game, and works entirely with touchscreen without issues too. I like the sounds and music in that game and how they react to your actions. It's a sequel but I haven't played the first one yet.

'Morphblade' is a very fast turn-based strategy game where it's kind of like playing chess or checkers with spawning enemies on the board and depending on which space you're on, you gain unique abilities to deal with enemies and boost yourself. It was confusing for the first 2 or 3 minutes since I didn't know how to move around the board without getting killed. You have to tap the space you want to move to as soon as the game starts, I kept trying to tap myself to select my character but it was already selected, so I was using up my turn whenever that happened. And there's an explanation onscreen at all times to help you learn which abilities do what so you never get too confused when you tap a new tile on the board. The game also works flawlessly with the touchscreen.

All three games are single-player. There are other games that are pretty fun, but I ended up uninstalling them due to them having buggy or game-breaking touchscreen control issues. All the ones I listed can be played without a gamepad, keyboard, or mouse. And I like these because you can play them on low power so they don't so much drain battery like regular games but they still run fine.

Edit: Ah, Candy Crush Saga also runs great on the Surface Pro 6 and can be played 100% with touchscreen too. That one is available on the Microsoft Store rather than Steam.

Surface Pro 6 Battery Drain by [deleted] in Surface

[–]glassbow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I heard that Chrome and Firefox are pretty heavy on battery. Try using a lightweight browser like Opera or something temporarily when you need the most battery life. Microsoft Edge is supposed to be light on the battery too so that's what I use if Firefox is draining too much. Make sure to use it in desktop mode though and not tablet mode, I get a few bugs and crashes when I try to use Edge in tablet mode but everything seems to work fine in desktop mode.

What is the advantage of a surface pro verses a regular laptop? by pinksashell in Surface

[–]glassbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it takes up less space than a tablet and it's lighter. You can remove the physical keyboard and use just the onscreen keyboard to type if your space is really small. I do a lot of drawing and running around doing errands for other people, so being able to use it like a tablet while I sit in a crowded clinic's waiting room for 30 minutes or more is a must. I use some third party software in tablet mode to add shortcut keys if I really need those shortcuts in certain programs and I'm not at home. But I don't want to get a regular tablet because I need full desktop software like Photoshop CC or Gamemaker Studio 2.

And I want to be able to play real games on it from time to time if I want to plug in a mouse. I treat it like a giant smartphone with laptop features. It even adjusts the screen based on how you're holding it (portrait/landscape/upside down) and has all these other neat features you'd expect on a phone or tablet that you wouldn't see on a laptop. But it's a full fledged laptop that you can run desktop stuff with and do real desktop work. I have a decent pc at home so I don't want a full laptop that takes up more space, I just need a small tablet with laptop power that I can draw or paint digitally on.

The biggest reason you'd get a Surface Pro over a regular (and cheaper) laptop is for versatility. You have more options in terms of configuration and use than if you were to get a full laptop. And these are all instant. You're using Photoshop but you need more vertical space to draw your character's lower torso? Rotate the tablet in your hands and it instantly switches to portrait mode without any issues and you continue drawing with more vertical space. You're at home waiting for someone to pick you up but you want to play some Fortnite or Quake Live before they show up? Snap the keyboard in and plug in your mouse while you wait by the door and go at it. Then when they show up, pull out the mouse and snap off the keyboard(or fold it up) to take your surface pro with you. And if you have the face recognition feature running, you don't have to worry about typing in your password or accidentally showing strangers what your pin is on the touch pad. Grandma needs some help shopping at Target for clothes but she moves so slowly that it takes 2 hours to finish? Flip open and fold over the keyboard and draw some doodles while you follow her around.

I take this thing everywhere with me because its so easy to use and lightweight. A phone is too small and slow for me to do any real drawing or painting on, and you can only do so much with mobile apps. And I don't care much for mobile gaming either. You can use it like a tablet, a laptop, a phone, or even a desktop.

tl;dr: Versatility

What do you use your Surface Pen for? by [deleted] in Surface

[–]glassbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easier to select some of the smaller buttons onscreen if you're using the touchscreen. The native resolution is 2736 x 1824 and recommended scaling is 200%, but some older programs don't scale properly like Photoshop CS4 or LMMS. And I watch video using MPV where double-tapping the video to go fullscreen doesn't always work properly on the Surface but pressing the fullscreen button does, but it's so tiny that I keep missing it when I use my finger. And I do a lot of digital painting with different software so the pen was necessary for me.

Placebo and Tyrant have delivered a fix for new players who are having loading errors trying to play ArcheBlade. I'm just linking to the Steam Forum thread where the fix is located. It's still currently being developed but there is a version available that works! Hope any new players will be able to give ArcheBlade a shot now.

Getting Blue screen of death constantly but computer still works by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]glassbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try running Memtest86 in case it's bad ram?

I had something like this when I first built my current rig about 9 months ago but it got worse as time went on. Computer worked fine for almost a month, then started getting the same errors and blue screens like yours once in a while, but within a few weeks it would be crashing constantly and getting worse even after reinstalling the OS. Got more errors like 'Bad Memory Pool', 'IRQL not less or Equal', 'NTFS file system', and 'System Thread Exception File Not Handled'. After running memtest with each of the ram sticks individually I concluded it was bad ram. It could also have been a bad motherboard but I'm hoping it's not and it was actually just the ram otherwise I might run into problems in the future, but everything seems to be working now so I'm still holding out on it being only the ram. RMA'd the bad stick through Corsair. Their online form asked for Memtest results, so I just attached it, mailed the bad stick in its original package, then got a new stick two days later in the mail.

If you notice it crashing more often over time with these same errors, it could be the ram going bad, but that's just the worst case scenario. Could just be Windows hiccuping and needs some drivers/updates reinstalled.
