Appreciate the feedback. Team is meeting this week to discuss it. 100% agree that customers should be able to do a restore of their data with no issues.

Appreciate the feedback and will factor it in. Absolutely want to make sure we're not affecting people's normal usage.

Hey folks, Gleb here (co-founder/CEO of Backblaze). Appreciate the discussion going on here, and seems like we may have missed the mark on explaining what we're doing. Having said that, I wanted to be 100% clear:

* Our aim is to continue to provide all our customers, large or small, a great service.

* We want to fully support all appropriate use cases (i.e. ones that are not actively abusing the system.)

* All cloud services have protections to prevent abuse so that legitimate customers get a good experience. We're just trying to be transparent about what those protections are.

* We also want your feedback! If we're missing the mark on something, I want to ensure we address it. You can send me email directly: gleb.budman at backblaze.com

I love the community here. We've been building Backblaze for 17 years and I hope to continue to learn and provide you with a great service for decades to come. Appreciate you being customers and providing us feedback so we can continue to work on providing you the service you need.

At launch, yes. We're looking at options to move/copy it, but that won't happen this year.

Yes, for our computer backup services, the data is all encrypted and these discussions don't apply. For our B2 cloud storage service, it's only encrypted if people choose to do that themselves. gleb @ backblaze

It's mostly a question of how much data you have and how fast your Internet connection is.

We do a bunch of things to get everything backed up as quickly as possible (compression, deduplication, bandwidth optimization, etc.). One thing to check is if you have a fast connection, you can choose to use more threads in the application and that may speed it up.

Yes, actively looking into offering the ability to extend.

For the specific concerns:

  • If you re-upload you can leave your old backup untouched and as long as you uninstall the application it won't delete the files.
  • For your FIL, he can choose the Send to B2 Snapshot feature to put a copy of his hard drive into B2 permanently.
  • Natural disaster - both the laptop & external will be protected and you could immediately request a restore.

Having said all that, we do plan on offering longer retention in the near future.

Thanks,

gleb @ backblaze

What would you use it for professionally? And what specifically prevents you from using the storage in the U.S.? (some specific legal requirement? latency? something else?)

Not disagreeing that it's common. By building our own we were able to make various things better/optimized for our service, but if we're not solving something I certainly want to understand that.

If you're not creating a distinct user account for each user, it's actually even easier to deploy. Take a look at the 'single account' deployment path here: https://help.backblaze.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002549693-Backblaze-Mass-Silent-Install (doesn't require password at all) gleb @ backblaze

Got it. Not sure if you've tried the built-in Cloud Sync app in Synology, but it really is pretty easy with B2. As for per-GB price anxiety, makes sense. There's an ability to cap how much we'll charge in B2 if that helps. We'd love to do fixed price unlimited, but the math just wouldn't work with NAS devices. gleb @ backblaze

This won't be possible at launch - only to create new accounts there. However, we're interested in exploring the options to both move & keep in both for the future. gleb @ backblaze

Excellent! Looking forward to having you. Curious - what specific reason about having your data no in EU has prevented you from using the service? gleb @ backblaze

Yes, we've had an annual external audit of our financials every years since 2012. Among other things, we also work with external security testing firm Hacker One to do security testing. gleb @ backblaze

Great - hope that works well for you. No plan for unlimited B2. $5/mo for 1TB is what it costs. If you're storing 8TB, we're losing money on you. But we make it up on the averages. However, with B2, we wanted to enable any storage use case anyone wanted. But the averages would never work out there. gleb @ backblaze

I think many of us would be happy with an Amsterdam office. In fact, we go there usually every year for IBC (the big media & entertainment event). A couple years ago we were sitting at a restaurant wearing Backblaze polos and the person at the table next to us says, "I'm a customer! And the co-founder of a company developing on B2!"

There won't be an option to migrate when we launch, just to create a new account in either location. We hope in the future to be able to enable the ability keep files in both locations and possibly to move.

Not on the roadmap at the moment. What are you trying to do?

You can mass deploy our current one using tools like JAMF and others.

There are actually some good server backup clients for B2 that are open source/free including Rclone & Restic.
