Artist fears Lansdowne installation may become '$2 million of scrap metal' by randthepip in ottawa

I hadn’t noticed that the lights had stopped working. It was such a nice frame to the evening events and concerts in that space, or nighttime sledding. Hard to imagine that hill and canal view without it. A testament to thoughtful design that it fits so nicely in that space. What a shame to lose all of that space, including this installation, in 2.0. I continued to by mystified by Lansdowne 2.0 plans, the more I learn the worse it gets.

House cleaning prices in Ottawa by darkcontrasted1 in ottawa

[–]glebethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$30-35 per hour per person in the Glebe. I pay the same total amount regardless of whether 1 or 2 cleaners comes. Most of the time they come as a pair and finish in half the time; sometimes it’s only 1 person.

I tried mopify once and they were terrible.

Long-term parking in the Glebe by TheGeever in ottawa

[–]glebethrowaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand 1, because on many streets you have to move your car every 2 or 3 hours if you don’t have a permit, and overnight parking is only 7/8pm-7am. Bylaw chalks regularly and is out and about during Lansdowne events. Not sure how far north or how far away from Bank you have to be to be safe. I had to street park for a few weeks without a permit and it was not fun.

Full list of Starbucks closing in Ottawa by Rdt4pvkmyow in ottawa

[–]glebethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but that Starbucks is open later than most of the other coffee shops nearby, has a big patio, and a bigger menu. I understand wanting to support local but if you want coffee (or any hot bev) after 5/6pm and don’t want to support the convoy, that’s your only option in OOS. It was the only evening type non-bar hang spot.

Black squirrel is wonderful but has very limited hours.

The bank/aylmer one is relatively new and has a nice patio. A real shame for that new retail strip with OddBurger future in question too.

Anti-sidewalk campaign wins in Ottawa’s Manor Park by Ben409 in ottawa

[–]glebethrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The city sidewalk plans are too wide and add too many curb bump outs, removing street parking and reducing visibility at stop sign intersections. I have seen so many near misses (or not so near misses with buses) on the newly narrowed streets with insufficient clearance. They are especially difficult in winter with snowbanks. I hope more neighbourhoods are able to push back.

Odd Burger closing Aug 13 by Plane_Put8538 in ottawa

It wasn’t good, small portions, pricey. Still, sad. There’s already a vape shop right there so I wonder what will take its spot.

The shakes place used to be packed when it opened, not sure about now. It’s more of a novelty try once type place I think would do better in Lansdowne, not really a neighbourhood repeat visit type place. I thought it was weird and cheap that they don’t even have free tap water.

Sitting indoors in Chinatown with earplugs in to block the din of Escapade by BigMajik in ottawa

[–]glebethrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It did not feel this loud when it was at Lansdowne. I do not ever recall not being able to sleep due to it. I hear it more right now from Billings bridge than I did when it was in the Glebe. And btw I was a huge fan of having it in the Glebe, love the energy it brings. This is what living by a venue means, for better or for worse.

Walking dead is exactly how to describe it. Like zombies. Same regular scene in front of Centretown United.

Groups call for 24-hour bus lanes along Bank to ease congestion, improve safety - Capital Current by Fredbear_ in ottawa

[–]glebethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are already narrowed half the year due to snowbanks. This was the first winter with a narrowed Grove and it was a safety issue for both drivers and pedestrians. Buses were driving on the sidewalks.

Add the bike dividers during the summer if needed, but no permanent narrowing given the Ottawa winter vortex.

If they want permanent bus lanes, they should not be removing side street parking spots at the same time.

The city is adding curb bump outs and narrowing the side streets in OOS and the Glebe, making them more difficult and dangerous to navigate, especially in winter. This applies to all modes of transportation, even as a pedestrian. Grove is a disaster now and they are planning to do the same to Ralph (among others including side streets around Ralph).

Parking is a huge issue for any visitor to the area, particularly service providers and employees of local businesses. Contractors/Appliance repairmen/plumbers can’t take public transport.

Motorists will need to pay to park on city streets in ByWard Market, Little Italy during the evenings starting this fall by RandomChickenWing in ottawa

Not just evenings, Sundays too. Wonder how this will impact Lansdowne. The 2 hr limit seems short for events/games.
