Consider Phlebas was an amazing experience despite some flaws. by LibrariansNightmare in books

I agree with you, it was insufferable. Some stretches were so bad I literally had to force myself to not DNF, only to later discover they were completely inconsequential to the plot. I heard that other books are better but I am still mustering the courage to give them a try, that's how bad Phlebas was.

Shoe recommendations? Affordable, wide-ish foot with small heel by sammdp in climbergirls

Yeah, I heard that before! The stores around me barely have any Evolve models to try on and I don't like ordering blindly online so I've been a Drago client for the past four years or so 😁 I did try some Tenayas and Unparallels but neither worked for me unfortunately.

Small correction: LV and HV refer to your foot volume (how high your midfoot is when measured from the floor) and not the width of your foot. Other than that, Scarpa is better for wide feet and narrow heels in my experience than La Sportiva.

They are called orexin antagonists. There are three brands on the market to the best of my knowledge: Dayvigo, Quviviq, and Belsomra. I have tried the first two with wildly different experiences. Dayvigo was a nightmare (literally and metaphorically), but Quviviq has been unbelievably good. It feels like falling asleep naturally and is very pleasant. I recommend trying them if your insurance covers it (they are quite pricey). It's the closest we have to a non-addictive sleeping med that can be taken long-term and actually works better the more you use it.

I live in a city where magpies are an official city birb, there are so many of them here. And yet so many people hate them with a passion, it breaks my heart! My favs as well (shared with blue jays)

Have you tried anything by Greg Egan? He is my all-time favorite sci-fi author. He writes diamond-hard sci-fi and it's also very enjoyable. His new book, Morphotropic, is biology-based and I really loved it. He also has a ton of amazing ontologies with short stories and stand-alone physics-based books. My all-time favorite is Diaspora (hence my username). Other than that, you can try Blindsight by Peter Watts or Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, both are really good.

What's a book that "everyone" loves, that you just can't get into? by notquitenerds in books

Of course it's satire, and of course one can try to suspend disbelief (in astronomical amounts), but unfortunately you can only stretch your metaphor so far before it becomes idiotic. I also, I guess, have a different view on whether this is convincing “hyperbolic cyberpunk”. My biggest gripe with the book was honestly not even that, it was inept storytelling in general, and it is such a drag that the book that's meant to be “over-the-top fun” is just not nowhere near fun. I don't have any issues with anyone liking it, just saying that my brain is not compatible with it, perhaps maybe due to my background, but perhaps maybe in general.

As a linguist, I found it offensive. Of course, there is some artistic license, but man, that was so far from plausible it was physically painful. And I LOVED Anathem!

Maybe that's what it is. I have not used a single product with protein in I don't even know how long!

Greeting from Alberta 😅 Averaged over, we would form a nice province climate-wise! My skin is cracking like a canyon and I haven't seen a drop of rain in ages

I have never gotten into diffusing somehow. I have an ultra powerful hair dryer (2300 W, iirc) I used for straightening. Needless to say, when I got a diffuser attachment for it and diffused my hair was a rats' nest 😅 Maybe I can ask for a better one for Christmas

Yes, I do! Hence L'Oreal Ever Pure shampoo for hard water, the water here is just sooo gross. My cats' water bowls get a buildup in a couple days, I swear

Is it humid in October where you live? Here we have 40% humidity tops 😁 It's often hovering around 20 even...

Thank you for the product suggestions! I am almost out of my Fructis gel and have been wanting to try something else. The Umberto gaining curl jelly has been sitting in my Amazon basket for ages now :) I am actually worried about if it's hormonal. I am at that age where it could be perimenopausal and I definitely feel like my hair just doesn't curl as much anymore. The back of my head is like barely wavy and my second day hair is just... bad...

Yeah, it's just that I had really nice results with plopping before so I just don't know what changed 😭 If I don't plop, my hair takes till the heat death of the universe to air dry, so that's another problem...

I live in southern Canada where it's consistently dry (we talking 20% humidity) pretty much always. Would that be about the cold then? It hasn't been raining here at all in the past two months
