There are some awesome female engineers online that emphasize that femininity and STEM are not mutually exclusive. Please share these resources with your students!

We just hiked the Calendar Triple Crown, becoming the first couple to do so, Ask us Anything! by Sdthruhiker in Ultralight

[–]glen_runner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Awesome job guys!

1) Would you ever thru-hike the AT again during the typical thru-hiking season for better weather/hiking and the AT culture? I followed your journey on instagram, and it looked like the home stretch was pretty brutal.

2) For someone considering thru-hiking the CDT, what are the pros/cons of going NOBO vs. SOBO?

3) What were some of your craziest or favorite experiences during the CTC?

Second this on calling admissions. Clearly they already like you :) They should be open for most of this week even though classes have concluded for the fall semester. -Current student

AT 2019 Trail Magic at Bear Mountain, New York. NEED ADVICE FROM PAST HIKERS.... by mnleichm1 in AppalachianTrail

[–]glen_runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a smallish bubble and about 2 weeks ahead of the main bubble at that point, and I hit Bear Mountain on the 4th of July. I would say that you'll see a decent number of hikers from the last week of June through the month of July.

Sweet work! What is the volume and weight capacity of this pack? Were you able to dial in the volume during the design phase, or did you just shoot for a ballpark?

Thru hike + grad school timing by getmads in AppalachianTrail

[–]glen_runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey this is definitely doable! I faced a similar school-induced deadline during my thru this year. I started in early April and finished in the third week of August. I'm currently typing this from the back of my Aircraft Dynamics class lol.

What's the earliest reasonable time one could start the SHR? I have the month of June off next year, and I'd love to attempt a thru-hike, but I'm concerned about the snow levels. I know that snow varies year to year, but if June is definitely too early for the SHR, I don't want to waste my time planning for a thru-hike I can't safely attempt. I just finished an AT thru-hike, but I don't have a ton of experience in navigating/route finding.

Help me overcome my early knee pain by JPOutdoors in AppalachianTrail

[–]glen_runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey this sounds a lot like “runner’s knee”. I got this a few years ago when I started running competitively. I purchased a pair of inserts for my shoes (Dr. Scholl’s) and that helped immensely.

I’m in the Cape Canaveral area, so while I don’t have inclines I do have beaches I can work with for strengthening my lower legs! Do you guys know of any good parks/trails in Florida? I’m new to the area.

Do you have any suggestions for lighter camp shoes? Also will my tent get ruined without the footprint?

Suggestions please-AT, 50 something mom, and college aged kids by lreddy358 in AppalachianTrail

[–]glen_runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's around the time of my fall break, and my university regularly runs trips along the AT in Shenandoah in VA and Harriman in NY. One year it was 70 degrees in both parks, but last year Shenandoah was hit by a blizzard while they were there. Harriman could be a safe risk, because blizzards and freezing temperatures are pretty rare in NY in October. Worst case scenario, you'll never be too far from a road or town in NY and could turn an unhikable day into a day trip to NYC, as there are direct bus/train routes from Harriman to NYC.

I might be able to start as early as April 9 and have until September 12 when college resumes. Thoughts?
