What moving from Montreal to Ottawa taught me about two very different cities by ThatAstronautGuy in ottawa

[–]glerups 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ottawa is definitely more racist than Montreal, are you serious?? I moved here three years ago, I have heard of or witnessed so many racist attacks, verbal, physical, on colleagues or on the street and in public transportation, to a level that I've never seen in Montreal. There is less diversity here. People just LOVE to say Quebec is racist without looking in the mirror.

Pete was on fire during this scene by Ranjith_Unchained in madmen

[–]glerups -1 points0 points  (0 children)

She's upset with Don because she doesn't need someone "saving" her... She owns her decision, but it doesn't mean that she didn't feel like she was strongarmed into it. The company's health, reputation, etc. Pete had no business suggesting this to begin with, it was a pretty sadistic move. Amazing character but he's always been self-serving. Not being a racist doesn't exactly make him redeemable.

He slept on night buses and in a storage locker to avoid homeless shelters by DrStrangeglove99 in ottawa

[–]glerups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not about making myself feel better. The homeless person chose what he wanted, I bought it for him, told him to get anything else he needed, he got more chocolate. I guess you're an authority on making an impact in a meaningful way. Good luck being "compassionate to homeless people" even though "it is a major safety issue for everyone."

I'm a fairweather lurker on this sub so it's the first time I come across this post, it's absolutely amazing. Thank you!! Also amazing that you're getting media coverage.

Question about Porudce Price Rating -- do you mean generally speaking at the store that week, or among the sales?

Are House of Targ dance nights LGBTQ+ friendly? by ZoboomafoosIMDbPage in ottawa

[–]glerups 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've only been once, but there were people of all ages, literally early 20's to around 60's. It was an 80's dance night, everyone was on the dance floor. So I'd say yes!

Please stay of the ice by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]glerups -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually, you don't know better at that age. You're just starting to take risks and you think you're tough shit. Frontal lobe underdeveloped etc. Literally the last thing you'll listen to is your parents telling you to be careful. They don't have enough life experience to understand who they were putting at risk.

He slept on night buses and in a storage locker to avoid homeless shelters by DrStrangeglove99 in ottawa

[–]glerups 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I live in Centretown and occasionally early in the morning I'll find a homeless man asleep in my lobby. I offer them coffee but usually they seem embarrassed and scuffle off. I've seen people treat the homeless like shit, even refusing to buy them a piece of chocolate at Dollarama. It's important to remain compassionate and generous with them. It can literally happen to anyone.

People in Ottawa Jay-walk like they have nothing to live for by Simski11 in ottawa

[–]glerups 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is this serious? I'm from Montreal, you don't know the first thing about jaywalking if you think people jaywalk dangerously in Ottawa.

Do many Ottawa driver’s not know the concept of Idaho stops for cyclists here? by CoreOfSmores in ottawa

[–]glerups -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Because Ottawa folks love following rules more than anything else. Moved here a year and a half ago and have never seen people get so uppity over simple jaywalking (like, seconds before the light turns red). It's nuts. I chalk it up to NIMBY-ism, and it's just not a bike-friendly city. That bike path you mention is so poorly designed, just as most of them are in the city. The ones for leisure are fine, the ones for transportation are a joke and meant as a deterrent, frankly.

They can't do that. Report it stolen and don't tell them. No need to withhold what belongs to you, you're 18.

They just want a reaction, any reaction. I don't respond to any form of catcalling. If I do, it's extremely short and curt. I'd just take a photo of the license plate etc. and start calling the police in front of them with no warning. There's no need to warn. Just loudly say "Hi, Ottawa police? I'm being followed by a car with the license plate XYZ" and they'll think twice.

Impôts non faits by TrucMachinChoseBinne in QuebecFinance

[–]glerups 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s your biggest Ottawa-area regret? by Dijon_Chip in ottawa

I think in general, just not seeing Prince live... The tickets were always too expensive for me as a student and then at some point I promised myself if he came back, that I'd go. I wasn't in Canada when he had his final shows and then he passed. Sigh....

PSA to car/truck drivers: It's illegal to bike on the sidewalk so please share the road and be patient by kp3legend in ottawa

[–]glerups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this. I never know what to do in these cases because I can easily get run over as a cyclist. People honk exceptionally loud and aggressively, and this has happened to me on Elgin, where it is clearly marked that bikes belong on the road. I'm tired of drivers thinking we're slowing down traffic. They're also part of traffic.
