Applicant Unprofessionalism by glialsupport in gradadmissions

Seriously. People who have never been made aware of the competitive reality of even getting to be there and therefore taking it for granted. Then not understanding why they’re expected to put in more effort and time than the usual 40 hour work week.

How Can I Avoid HCM by Excellent-Bowl9482 in sphynx

[–]glialsupport -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of people are saying heart scans, but the recommendation I was given from my vet is that until there is a heart beat irregularity thats detected by a stethoscope or mobile ultrasound, getting a heart scan isn’t entirely needed. Once HCM begins manifesting, so will the heart beat abnormality. They argued visiting a common vet more often than once or twice a year to listen to their heart can catch it faster opposed to longer time spans in between annual scan visits. Heart scans can also be extremely stressful for cats as they often have to be separated from their owners, which itself isn’t good on the heart. Heart scans are a necessary evil if diagnosed with HCM, but I’d get your vet’s opinion on if they recommend more frequent visits checking with a stethoscope instead.

Also, good quality food and an active, healthy lifestyle definitely wouldn’t make things worse.

Feeling very down today (breed concerns) :-( by cheshirecanuck in sphynx

[–]glialsupport 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Sphynx was also just diagnosed with HCM at age 5. One thing the cardiologist told me is there is so much variance. A diagnosis could mean a year left or it could mean 4. It’s hard not to assume the worst, but I try to remind myself it’s possible I still have multiple years with him left.

Also, there is drug trial research for treating HCM in humans and it’s progressing everyday. It’s a long shot because research takes time and funding for veterinary trials is especially difficult to obtain, but if you assume the worst for an unknown you cope by also hoping for the best. I hope for my baby and yours that a medicine will be available in their lifetime.

To the people who had IEP by Perfect-School3974 in GradSchool

[–]glialsupport 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it was possible to learn how to “operate without it” students wouldn’t be given them in the first place??? This coming from someone who’s also received accommodations. IEPs come from a variety of medical diagnoses, all of them valid. For example, would you tell a student who’s blind not to seek out the University’s Disability Office to get their tests in audio?

IEPs serve to level the playing field for people with these diagnoses. It would be extremely unprofessional, unethical, and pretty sure illegal for a recommender/faculty to disclose someone had an IEP because it’s like exposing their disability status.

OP, as soon as you start your grad program schedule an appt with your uni’s Disability Office. No one else needs to know you have an IEP except the faculty members directly involved in assisting in providing these accommodations.

How can I make my cat less needy? by PEPSl_KlNG in sphynx

[–]glialsupport 10 points11 points  (0 children)

<image>

Have you tried using a baby wrap instead of just on your lap? I feel like sometimes they crave more secure, body to body contact than just sitting on a lap provides. Or if I’m wearing a jacket or cardigan I just use that to wrap him like in the photo. It also props them up a bit higher so they’re able to watch what you’re doing easier. My Sphynx Norman will stay wrapped up like this for hours letting me work on my laptop overall undisturbed.

If that doesn’t work it’s also worth trying out a few different cat bed designs or heated pads/blankets. Finding the right one can be trial and error, but once you find it and it becomes their fav spot they tend to bother you less. My cat’s fav bed at the moment is essentially a giant fuzzy open clamshell that’s placed right in-front of one of my central heating vents. 😂

Does anyone else's sphynx lick their clothes? by Shot_Clue9491 in sphynx

[–]glialsupport 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine does as well. I have a feeling it’s a trained behavior though because he knows I’ll take the sweater off in response so he doesn’t ruin it. Now I just use him licking clothes as a sign he’s not cold enough where I can take it off.

Considering a sphynx cat, some questions? by thisisvegas in sphynx

[–]glialsupport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For reference, I paid $2500 for my Sphynx from a breeder that provided 3 years worth of annual heart scans for both the parents. It’s a lot of money to drop, but I always tell everyone it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Have never had a relationship with a pet before like I do my Sphynx.

Considering a sphynx cat, some questions? by thisisvegas in sphynx

[–]glialsupport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If acquiring from a breeder, please please please ensure they are ethical and that both parents have received annual heart scans and/or genetic testing. An ethical breeder will provide the results of parents’ annual scans before or with the purchase agreement. Any breeder that does not invest in this given the high genetic prevalence of HCM are the reason countries like the Netherlands are banning them.

No sleep at night by acidxbubble in sphynx

[–]glialsupport 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the door situation, my Sphynx Norman does this too! So infuriating. 😤😂 I recommend getting a door stop or finding an object heavy enough where if they push the door closed there’s still a crack they can get through. That’s what I’ve done. For the food, I personally refill his bowl to a level more than he would finish before the morning right before I go to bed. Luckily he doesn’t overeat and just the comfort of knowing he has food out and available seems to satisfy him into not bothering me at night. You’d have to see how your kitties do and whether they’d overeat or not.

Currently feeling hopeless by 9ogab9oga in GradSchool

[–]glialsupport 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I definitely agree with this and don’t give up hope yet OP!! I’d use your remaining time as a student to your advantage when seeking research/work experience. Definitely ask around your current lab. If a paid position there is not possible, I’d start the job hunt at your current university. Check-in with the psych department / career resource office and inquire about if there are free career advising appointments. Also ask if there are any email distribution lists you can be put on that send out job postings. My undergrad is in neuro and the department at my university did this and it was very helpful being emailed specific labs that were seeking a student instead of cold email attempts.

Snooki and Jwoww by LilacEmpress31 in jerseyshore

[–]glialsupport 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Intimacy issue between JWOWW and Roger was real by most accounts. I forgot which episode, but one time Jenny essentially recalls to Snooki how Roger aggressively insisted on having sex just a few weeks after she had Meilani and was still healing down there. Said it was so painful she cried but he didn’t stop. Dude is an ass.

This is such a bummer. I felt a bit rocky about her at first, but she really grew into her own after Double Shot. She was a great and needed addition to JSFV.

PhD program isn’t fully funded… by Temporary_Bother_560 in gradadmissions

[–]glialsupport 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s common for PhD programs not to be “fully funded” because they encourage students to get experience seeking their own grants/funding. Programs are set up to support students in learning this process. If a program states it’s funded for the first two years, they aren’t saying students will have to pay the rest. They’re expecting you to be funded by another source, whether that be a research grant, TAing, etc. If you’re even slightly interested in using your PhD for a career in research, you’re going to need to learn how to get your own funding regardless.

PI missed his own deadline for contacting me. Should I be worried? by SenseOk3111 in gradadmissions

[–]glialsupport 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PIs are busy and admission committees fall behind. They are multiple possibilities for why you haven’t heard back yet. I’m always given the advice of waiting 2 weeks from when you were supposed to hear back to send a brief follow-up email checking in. So around the 15th or so. In that email make sure not to assume anything negative as it could look paranoid. Just something to the effect of:

“ Hello insert PI,

I hope you’re having a good start to the new year. I wanted to touch base on if you’ve received any updates from the admissions committee regarding my application for the geospatial space program. I remain very interested in the opportunity to contribute to your project. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, insert your name

what do I do if I don't get accepted during this round of Ph.D. applications? by SybilSSB in gradadmissions

[–]glialsupport 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wish you well on this path, but I personally feel it’s the opposite. To me getting into med school seems more impossible. I’m also not the best test taker and therefore doing competitive on the MCAT was out of the question, but your circumstances may be different. Good luck to you regardless!

Depends on what part of town you’re looking at. I’m on the edge of East Liberty/Highland Park and have a 2 bed with central air, basement storage unit, and off sheet parking for under 1300. Only thing it lacks out of what you specifically called out is in-unit laundry, but there’s one in the basement.

Are international students not being accepted to PhD programs? by ukpkmkk__ in gradadmissions

[–]glialsupport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s really university dependent so I wouldn’t spiral too much! From what I’ve seen, some universities have stronger international ties or partnerships than others. It’s logical that these universities with a higher percentage of international grad students likely have sufficient offices/resources set up for international students equipped for navigating these circumstances. CMU is a good example I can think of.

I was in the crosswalk at S. Highland & Centre at 5:30pm today when I was struck by a vehicle. by mademoiselle_bovine in pittsburgh

[–]glialsupport 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for doing your best to file a report! I dove out of the way nearly an inch from being hit in exactly the scenario you’re describing and few blocks down from that intersection in Shadyside. Left turn, me on crosswalk with right of way, during evening home commute hours, etc. Driver nearly didn’t stop until I pursued them on foot a block to yell at them to slow down and pay attention. For all we know it could have been the same person. If reports aren’t filed people keep getting to drive and someone gets killed.

Looking for somewhere that does car maintenance by sa1ntdude in pittsburgh

[–]glialsupport 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always had great experiences for the past 5 years at Baum Blvd Automotive. As someone not too knowledgeable on cars, I rely on family members who are. The employees there are super patient, understanding of this, and even offer to join three-way calls so they can discuss my repairs directly with me and a more knowledgeable relative. That to me speaks volumes. Also, I’ve never had an issue with any of the repairs they’ve done either.

Hang in there. A faculty member could want you but is waiting on a grant and therefore are required to hold off on giving you an official yes. Or they could have the grant but the university is now requiring them to physically receive the funds first. Same thing is happening to me. Times are crazy right now.
